That’s exactly how it went boys. Pain in the but. Water changes galore and even with auto water change system they got the best of me. I’m sticking with Asian fish. They are hard to kill.Also have a few Aulonacara species, a couple of turtles and a Bichir and a hybrid ray.

I like it. You guys in Calgary are lucky to have access to a pretty good selection of fish. In Red Deer we get Petland and Petsmart and the occasional Kijiji score but nothing cool like this

Yeah, I've had a few issues with them already. I got a group of wild caught discus and only 2 of the 8 are left. The domestics are doing pretty good I think I have a couple that are paired up, but then I have one that hasn't been eating. They are definitely harder to keep than most fish. Here's a few new pics:

My discus get 30% every second day, filters cleaned every month, pre-filters get rinsed every second water change. My arowanas are on a drip and get 100 gallons every day and change filter floss as required-usually weekly. I also backwash the ultima II every 15 days.

I got them from Calgary. Alberta Discus. I wouldn't go with wild caught discus. Wild strains F1 or F2 but not wild caught.

I am on city water.

I don't use RO water but my house is filtered by a Pelican water system. I don't have any chlorine and water comes out of the tap at 7.5 ph.

I find the wild ones are more needy than domestic varieties. They require a very clean tank as the low ph where they come from seems to make them vulnerable to bacteria that thrive in our high ph water. Most discus people do major water changes daily. I have kept my stock low (13 fish in a 230gallon) and I do 30% water changes every 2 days.

I had to remove the FRT because he was bothering the aro. Then the aro started to pick on the discus so I moved the ray from SR aro tank to the XB aro tank, then put the FRT with the SR aro, and moved the discus to a 230 gallon of their own. He has lost a few scales already but not from the decor. He freaks out and hits the cross bracing and loses his scales on it. He`ll calm down eventually. I haven`t owned and arowana yet that has never lost a scale.They grow back.

Thanks to all for the comments. The 3d background I ordered on-line from designs by nature. I installed them with pond spray foam and ran the airlines behind them. This way you don't see them in the tank. I sprayfoamed most of the rocks in place and the airstones too.

I am new to discus but mine are kept with clown loaches. The discus got used to eating frozen bloodworms out of my hand and I slowly transitioned them to eat flakes and pellets the same way, the rest is history. None of my other fish will eat from my hands. I feed the other fish at the other end of the tank and then feed the discus by hand. So far so good. I haven't had them that long. Maybe a month?? They seemed pretty shy at first but now that they've settled they are more cichlid like. Some of them eat aggressively while others still pick away.

I need to get some new shots now that I've moved some fish around. Those shots are from a couple of months ago, before I got the acarichthys and the discus. I won't have time to do another photo shoot until mid December. By then everyone should be settled in and more photogenic. The discus still hang out in the corner a fair bit. I'd like to get a shot where everyone is swimming around. The discus also need to beef up a bit they are still pretty skinny and weak. They will eat out of my hands now and they are eating flake and color bits. I'm also going to try the cobalt discus food as the other flake I have seems to bring out the red colors. My discus have pretty poor color compared to some I've seen. I'm hoping a change of food, and the more settled in they get the better the color will be. They don't seem to be bothered by their tankmates, as much, since I got rid of the flagtail. The arowana doesn't bother them. He's still a little sketchy from the trip and hasn't eaten yet. I hope he'll eat soon, I've offered superworms, pellets, shrimp and crickets but he turns a blindeye so far.
