    ph crash

Unless your fish are showing ill signs, don't bring it back too fast. I made that mistake and had deaths once. You could simply do a regular water change a few times for safety reasons. Also try testing the water lower in your tank, on a very rare occasion you can have a chemical build up in one area that isn't the case with the whole tank. Peat or water softeners can cause the crash as well. Also keep in mind fish technically don't die from ph shock, they do die from osmotic shock where the water around them quickly changes and they can't regulate the water outside with the water inside their bodies.
  2. My gf says she had a tank a few years ago with a fish who had a growth similar to that, she said it was much bigger, nothing fell off. She called it a tumor. Said it never spread to the other fish. She also said the fish did last for a long time but eventually died.
  3. I'm sorry, I meant your fish will supply you with a good source of nutrient. I could also add that it seemed my charcoal only lasted 50% of it's usual life. I would imagine it picked up the plant waste.
  4. I did this for 9 months. You need to monitor your iron levels. As well as getting a good source of nutrient. The bacteria the fish produce attach to the roots of the plants and aid in the uptake of nutrients. When I did this I had a pretty weak bio load and the plants grew like weeds.
  5. The one in Edmonton wasn't bad either. I walked in. grabbed a 25 foot python. didn't see any other deals worth having and I'm at my fish limit. walked up to the till, paid it, walked out. Did this at approximately 9:30 - 10:00am
  6. I tried that site in the past. For me it was two purchases where I paid for something and nothing ever arrived. By the way how are you getting around the import laws surrounding live plants? Do you have a certificate?
  7. They will breed with a temperature change. Mine used to do it after I did a water change with cold water. However I never ever got a hatch out of it. I wonder if mine were sterile
  8. Tank is 90 gallons. All the ill fish got beat up and had what I can only describe as pieces dragging followed by this illness. For filters I have Marineland Emperor 280 and 400.
  9. I change just under 30% of the water once a week. however since the crazy breeding the main tank has been a little overpopulated. This fish is quaranteened in the 10 gallon with its babies and other mate. It's been getting a 15% water change daily.
  10. I'm now treating it with some wide spectrum antibiotics. This is a picture from earlier today. melafix is completely useless as it was treated with that from the beginning before anything was serious. At this point I don't expect the fish to last long, but it does look a little better.
  11. It's not fluffy. The fish also doesn't eat.
  12. One that only had a tiny scrape on one fin now has a huge gaping hole in the fin, and a white thats spread to the body around the effected area and appears it could be growing. It's about 1-2cm radius from the effected area. I have been treating with melafix, but it doesn't seem to be getting better. When I started the treatment there was no hole in the fin, just a lil tear.
  13. 2 died, I moved the rest of the species to a 10 gallon tank and doused with some melafix as another one is damaged. Different fish decided to breed and beat everyone up.
  14. He's dead. can't medicate the main tank due to clown loaches.
  15. Not sure this is a real emergency but I would hate for something to happen. Got into a fight with another fish and this is the end result. Just wondering if or how I should treat it. I have a spare 10 gallon or a 1 gallon I could use for something. I don't suspect there will be anymore violence as they are usually docile. It may have wondered into anothers nest.
  16. http://nlsfishfood.com/ Went there, got a list of websites who distribute. Went to the Canadian one listed who doesn't sell to me. That one lists some of the stores which I've already been to yet don't have it. I've been to NC, they don't have it but I didn't talk to them about ordering it in. I've been slowly switching to nls as my other food supply runs out. I'm now out of my big pellets and some of my fish are having trouble finding/eating the smaller stuff.
  17. In the past I used hydrogen peroxide to get rid of algae. I can give you a quantity that shouldn't damage your plants. The only biproduct is extra oxygen in your water. Use of more than recommended and you'll see plants suffer a lil and possibly fish. I can't guarantee it's safe for everything. And I'm not posting the quantities I use in fear that someone on google might decide it's the best thing out there and administer it wrong. pst me if you really really want. Another algae option is to simply change your lighting.
  18. I'm looking for this food but no one seems to carry it. I would have posted in equipment buy/sell but I'm not posting a price and will pay whatever retail is. I'm not looking for a specific size and may be willing to purchase the whole bucket. So if you've seen this in a store, just tell me which one and I'll head there.
  19. When I bought my t5ho they told me after 12 months. After a period of 2 years it seemed to be very dull. I've since replaced the bulbs. fyi anyone wants a cheap t5ho store pm me.
  20. I have the same problem now. I used to be able to do it.. and now I can't. I wonder if it could be a security setting? I primarily use Firefox.
  21. When I was new to the hobby, I bought from the wall of promises. My fish died all the time when I was medicating and adding chemicals. I keep a bottle of prime for said tank emergency which I havn't used in a long long time. I don't remove chloramine and my fish are perfectly healthy. Forget your ph, your fish will die if you play with it. They don't want to be readjusted constantly with new chemicals added. If you're artificially removing ammonia all the time, your cycle will take much longer to complete. Feeding more than once every day or 2 will lead to crazy ammonia levels, especially in an uncycled tank. Also if you are feeding frozen food, pre rinse it in a net. Many contain high ammonia levels Just for arguments sake I established a 10g tank with 5 blue rams while not treating water and doing one water change every 2 weeks. I only used it as a holding tank while I made sure what said petstore sold me had no diseases. The petstore didn't expect them to survive. Seriously, no one here will recommend blue rams for establishing a tank. Gold fish are far more hardy. In my opinion I'd do water changes to remove the chemicals you already have in there as they could be interfering with the cycle process which will lead to a re-do. Use only prime for water changes, it will break the Chloramine. And run charcoal in your filter. You could also buy some used gravel or sand from someone elses established tank. It will speed up the cycle process. But that comes with a risk of introducing new illness.

    4 REAL?

I've been trying out a carbo-plus knock off I bought from e-bay. It needs hard water to work. It bubbled when I got it. Within the first month it quit bubbling. I now own a useless pos.

    Failed heaters

We've all had failed heaters. I've seen lots of other things fail due to our unstable power, brown outs, etc. One could also blame lightening. But instead of blaming whatever company who made the given heater.. lets see how many failed while plugged into... Please don't take this poll too literal as our test base may actually be too small to conclude any definite answers as well we are not separating brand names and defective heaters for umpteen other reasons. We also may not see more failed heaters while plugged into.. simply because most people don't use those items with aquariums.
  24. I wonder if these malfunctioning heaters we seem to have here could really be the result of the unstable power we get from the wall outlet. I have a fried motherboard as proof, but rather than fail, it just sucked more and more power untill it was a crawl. Since then I have a battery backup for my computer and about once every few months I hear it fighting something fierce out of the wall. I've been considering this for the aquarium. They're about 70 bux and up depending on what insurance they offer.
  25. sae's get lazy. though they do eat the algae, doesn't really seem to make a difference. You could try going for an aquarium light that runs at about 10,000 kalvin to remedy an algae problem. I've also never had a hair algae problem since getting sae's.
