  1. Will look even better with some Red Crystal Shrimp!
  2. It's been awhile so here is a update. There have been no more shrimp casualites so it wasen't the ferts but my neglagence of not having a heater. I have stabalized the temperature @ 78F and hid the heater in the back of my tank. I have dosed .1ml of excel and iron a couple of times now. I'm happy so say there hasen't been any plant degrading as of yet. I hope it stays that way! I also picked up a plant from a fellow aqauriust and put it on the piece of wood. I hope that it will root into the wood. Here is a picture of the tank as of Feb. 28th
  3. I heard that nox-ich is horrible stuff and I was told to stay away from that product. I stained my floor with that nox-ich garbage. Try kick-ich it's a totally different medicine without that dye in it. I tried it and I had no problems with anything in my tank. Plant/Reef safe.
  4. drilling a 10G tank wouldn't be very fun either.
  5. As long as the leaves are out of the water I believe.
  6. When you took the plastic trim off your tank did the glass have sharp edges? I was thinking about doing that once.
  7. I had a hard time finding a light for my 5.5G tank. I ended up buying a 18w mini coralife fixture but the only problem is you can't attach legs. I think they are used for refugiums. How many watts is your light fixture? I'm a SW person myself(about 1 year) so most of this is also new to me. I'll watch this journal and perhaps I'll learn something.
  8. I live in a apartment so my water doesn't cost me. If I lived in my own house I would definately be collecting the water and using it for watering plants/lawn...... I have stopped using my RO water for my FW tank. I of course still use it for my SW tank, don't feel like a GHA forest in my tank!
  9. I would say only a quarter (possibly less) of the water is coming out the clean line. Most of the water goes down the drain which is a total waste of water. I wonder why they make it that way? there is alot more usable water coming out the waste line.
  10. I lost one shrimp and the rest are fine now. Now I'm showing signs of algae on my anubias and it looks brown in color. This normal?
  11. has the crab ever gotten out of the tank? I used to have a crab. I would wake up for work and it would be out on the floor strutting it's stuff. Happened like 4 or 5 times (yes I had a lid!) before he died from drying up. Darn thing would climb up between the glass and the heater, grab the HOB filter where the water pours out, climb into the filter and get out that way. here is what the crab looked like I think it was a spider crab. Anywhoo sorry to change the topic. That pic brought back crabby memories
  12. I've been having temp problems ever since I started the tank. I put a heater in the back of the tank behind the plants and set temp to 78f. I'm monitoring where the temp will stabalize. I'm guessing this is the problem with the shrimp.
  13. I'm not a big fan of mixing SW because I only have a 24gpd RO unit. Other than that I really enjoy the hobby.
  14. I did dose both at the same time. I calculated the amount to 0.5mL and decreased the dose by 0.1mL. The shrimp stopped twitching now so I hope it pulls through.
  15. Here's some pics of my 2 month old reef. Superman Monti Purple Firefish Pipe Organ Candy Cane Crocea Clam FTS ~1-1.5Mons
  16. When I used my net to scoop up plants from the top of the water I also scooped up a whole bunch of skim/slime coating. What the heck? I think the shrimp died because it's laying on it's back now. damn Time to do a 50% water change.
  17. I dosed my tank with .4ml of excel and iron. Now one shrimp is doing the funky chicken. I think I may have made a mistake.
  18. Does the waste water have all the removed elements or does it obsorb into the filters?
  19. Can I use the waste water from my RO unit for my planted tank?
  20. I really like the rams they are so much fun to watch. They are my favorite FW fish.
  21. Very, very nice pics. I always stop to look at them in big als. I'm also going to use one as a desktop background. Thanks for sharing. What size tank is it in?
  22. I have a couple questions about Flourish excel and iron. It says one capful for 50G so how would I dose with these? Should I start dosing now? I'm going to move the anubias down to the branch to get it closer to the gravel and I'll move the grass over to the left side to cover the powerhead.
  23. Looking at the light I think it could be moved into a wider fixture. If I find a longer broken fixture I'm going to do some transplant surgery. I put mine on top of a 2.5G tank lid turned sideways. The box is a powerhead. I can't remember what brand it is. It has PH101 on the side but when I google it I can't find anything on it. I remember buying it at a clearence table so it probably discontinued. For plants I have Jave fern, Pogostemon, Anubias, Hemianthus and some kind of plant that looks like grass (right back). I'm not sure if I like the anubias where it is because it's covering alot of the wood. It almost seems too big for it.
  24. I'll plant the Anubias on the wood. I want to plant the java fern on the wood but it's too tall. How do I prune this plant? Should I just get rid of it? I would like to get a old fixture that dosent work and cut it down to the width of my tank(16") and transfer the guts of this fixture into it. It seems like a perfect light except for the width. If anyone has a broken coralife fixture they don't want I'll take it off your hands.
  25. Here is a updated picture. A orange shrimp is posing on the wood.
