  1. I bought some plants today. Anubias, Hemianthus and Pogostemon. I didn't realize that pogostemon was difficult to grow when I bought it. How do FW tanks cycle?
  2. firestorm it is a 9" fixture and I'm not very happy with the design. I'm going to stop by nature's corner today and check out their carpet plants.
  3. thedarkstar I would be interested in Riccia and Java moss. I'm currently trying to find a carpet plant and moss for the wood. I'll have to check out natures corner, I haven't been there since I ventured into SW.
  4. To be honest with you I don't know what size the tank is. It's either a 5 or 5.5G so I'm guessing 3-3.5wpg. I want to stick to a easy to maintain planted tank. I failed horribly trying this with a 55G so I'm going to learn slowly this time. With a shrimp tank how many can I have in this tank? Are they jumpers?
  5. Thanks werner that site was very useful. I found some plants that I was interested in. For ground coverage I liked Hemianthus callitrichoides and Glossostigma elatinoides. I was also looking at Vericularia for the piece of drift wood. Where in Edmonton would I find these? If someone has some to sell I will buy some from you.
  6. Thanks for the info. I'll attach it to the wood then. Did I buy the wrong type of plants? I anyone could recommend some plants for me that would be appreciated. Does anyone know of a store that sells plants other than the kind that pj, petsmart, bigals sell? Seems they sell the same plants.
  7. Will the plant root to the wood?
  8. I'll use dechlorinated water from now on. Should I use a couple drops of excel? I picked up the shrimp for my tank today. 2 orange bee shrimp and a red cherry shrimp. Here is a couple of pics. Picked up a 2x9w pc fixture. kind of small but better than a desk lamp. I want to raise it up some how. Orange Bee Shrimp Now to find some ground covering plants.
  9. I used Geosystems substrate it says extra fine river gravel on the bag. It also says made in the Phillippines, OMG it's not made in China  It's gravel that my son uses for his hermit crabs.
  10. I've added the gravel to the tank and a piece of driftwood. At the moment I'm filling it with RO water. Is RO water necessary? or is dechlorinated water ok? I'll post a picture when my camera is finished charging.
  11. thanks for the good info. This sounds like it can fit into my budget many times over! all I need to buy is excel and a light. I'm going to do some research into lighting but could you recommend one?
  12. I thought I was moving away from FW but now I'm thinking of starting a 5.5G planted nano with shrimp only. I seen some pictures and they are very nice. But my only experience with FW plants were the plastic kind so I need some help. I know that people have a Co2 bottle but I would like to do without it. What equipment would I need to start a 5G planted nano? Filter, Light, suppliments, substrate to make this happen?
  13. This may be an older thread but I would think a 150G would definately need a skimmer. I wouldn't waste my time with a HOB. Drill the tank and add a sump. Who wants to look at skimmers, heaters....
  14. Watch out for the damsils if you add fish in the future. They can be mean little fish!
  15. I'd stray from the lion fish for awhile. Start with very hardy fish like a pair of clowns or some damsils. They will be able to withstand some mistakes along the way. Trust me you will make a mistakes from time to time. Just thought I'd toss in my two cents.
  16. Hi, I'm moving about 10min away from where I live now. I know that your supposed to not feed your fish prior to the move. Considering that the move is short should I still not feed them?
  17. Hello, I would give that tank a good cleaning scraping all the glass with a razor. After wash with vinegar. For a stand anything that can hold the weight will work. I bought mine new from my local fish store. Filtration should be 5 times the volume of the water in your tank(400GPH). Get a filter that is larger than you need. More filtration the better. I went with a canister filter because it goes in the stand. I like Eheim they are excellent. I would also get a Koralia powerhead for circulation. Water movement is key in a tank with lots of fish. This just touches the iceberg for help. Message me if you need anymore help I'll gladly help with anything.
  18. I'm also building a 55G tank. I'm sure they are tempered also. Get a Overflow box for your tank. I'm looking at a CPR CS90 or CS100.
  19. Hi everyone, This is going to be my second sw tank, and my first with a sump. I have no experience with sumps so I need help. I'm starting a 55 gallon tank. I need to know what size of holes to drill in my tank, size of sump, what size of piping, pump size. If anyone can help me I would appreciate it. Thanks, bignose.
  20. I'm going to buy his new home today! Should I go with substrate? I was tinking about it because it looks better. But, I heard it a pain to clean. Unlike rocks with you can vacum I have no idea how to clean subst.
  21. I fed it Kirill, feeder Minnows and goldfish. Recently I have been feeding scallops, and prawns. Yeah it is a small tank for the fish. I'm currently on the market for a 90G or larger. That should help out for the puffer. After I get the new tank I'm gonna convert the 55G into a reef tank. I'm new into the SW thing with a 10G nano. I figured with the extra tank why not! I'm looking for the components for the 55 convertion and the bigger tank right now. One questions about the coloration. The pics that I always see on the internet show nice dark striped puffers. Mine has lighter colored stripes. Do the stripes get darker with age?
  22. Hello, I have a 2 month old 10G nano with the exact same thing. The only difference is mine has red slime algae. Try buying a couple turbo snails. When I added mine into the tank a week ago they have been cleaning steadily at night. What a difference they made. It`s like new rock again. They have been eating GH algae, I don`t know if they go for the slime. Every week I clean out the algae growing on the sand. What a mess!
  23. Wow that looks like a big fish, It`s mouth looks rather large! My Fahaka puffer is about 5 1/2" long. Man can that thing eat!! I fed it a prawn yesterday and I thought it was going to explode!! Great personality, I would recommend to anyone. Tubby the Fahaka
  24. :welcome: Hello, I'm new to this site and would like to say hello. My first thread will be about my puffer fish. It is a Fahaka about 5-6" that I've had for about 4 months now. I have a couple topics to talk about: 1. I am going to buy it a new home and was wondering about its habitat. It`s in a 55 gallon tank right now. It`s ok for now but I want to get it into a large enough tank. I was going to go with a sand bottom, but I have never dealt with sand in a freshwater tank. How do you clean the sand without loosing it during the weekly clean. 2. Man is this fish ever lazy. Does anyone here have any experience with them. I bumped up the temperature to 80F. I read on another site that it makes them more active, but not to mine. Anyways, I hope to hear from everyone. Thanks, bignose.
