  1. Lots of plants as they're easy to catch, probably some blue Moscow guppies(show quality), mollies..
  2. Warm them up to over 80 and you'll get bubblenests!!
  3. Fishy folks, I am looking for lots now. We are over 20 percent full. Please pm me with your requirements!!
  4. Come and check us out!! First meeting of the fall and we will have a presentation on fish shows. Our jar show is bettas and we will have our mini auction, raffle, door prize, etc. Meeting starts at 7:30pm at Crescent Heights community hall. It's also your chance to register your lots for the big auction October 18th!! Hope to see you then!
  5. Fyi, next jar show at the CAS meeting is bettas(and I didn't choose it!!). Come on down and check out some gorgeous fish!!
  6. 1890 lumens, is that for the fixture and how long is it?
  7. Check that you've got a fixture that has a Kelvin temp around 6500k.
  8. I hate to say this but most of the big box stores are in business. If they sold fish that lasted, they wouldn't have a repeat customer. And if you go back and mention you're having problems with fish death, they sell you some water chemical, medicine, etc. If you want your fish to last, get a fish suited to your water and your tank style and buy from a local breeder.
  9. Latest find is mini bolbitis and I do have crypt blassi "rosanveriq", variegated anubias petite and many more. Just in the midst of cleaning out tanks and rediscovering plants..
  10. Fyi, the Calgary Aquarium Society is a great way to get started. We have monthly mini auctions with great prices as well as the big auctions semi annually (next one October 18th). As well you get discounts at the local stores(Pisces, Riverfront, Big Als) and can borrow books from our library. Good place to get locally grown plants as well as equipment, and aquascaping supplies. End commercial...
  11. Hi, first off welcome to the planty world!! We need more plant people. I do have a comment though. It looks like the only plant you want so far is java moss which doesn't need lots of high tech equipment. Do some more research(and not just in the forums) and read some plant books too before you go spending large sums of money. Growing plants is like riding a bicycle. We all started out on trikes and then progressed. A planted tank can be as simple or as difficult as you would like.. Good luck!!
  12. Please come and take some!! Giant and spiral..
  13. A couple of comments that hopefully will be food for thought for all of you; 1. There is only one side to this story. Perhaps these were new or sick reptiles he had taken in, we don't know. As for the rabbits, Wayne only sells reptiles or fish so I'm thinking they were someone's dinner. Also what is medical distress? Were they not fed, enclosures not clean etc? Quite frankly, I think Riverfront is an easy target for the SPCA as he's not one of the chain stores with deep pockets for lawyers. 2. Response on social media has been nasty. What happened to the" innocent until proven guilty" that we all abide by? 3. Riverfront is this man's way of providing for his family and his livelihood for many years. All this publicity will destroy his business and what will he do then? Just my 2 cents!!
  14. Yes, the "genius of planted tanks" has passed away. He has inspired millions and more through his beautiful tanks and photos.. The aquariums in heaven are going to be awesome...
  15. My dad has been an "enabler" ever since I was small, even letting me take care of the tank in his office. So he's 83 now and I'm telling him about my explosion of mollies. Hmm Calgary water and planted tanks equals more mollies. His comment "well, they've found a nice place now and decided to raise a family(more like an army..)" Pretty funny coming from a pretty gruff old man...whom I love for allowing me to fill a rumpus room with tanks..
  16. If the power supplies are crapping out, you may want to look at your design. Major issue would be too much heat.
  17. Sad day as one of my napoensis cories passed away. She was originally from Sarnia Ontario(captive bred), was at the last Edmonton show and most recently travelled back to the CAOAC show in Toronto in May, taking third I think. She was over 5 years old and had a good life living in heavily planted tank, getting shrimp pellets several times a week. She should have some serious frequent flyer points in heaven and here's hoping there's lots of boy napoensis chasing her around..
  18. One of the CAS members used eavestrough as the extrusion and put T5 sunblasters in it. Looks cool..
  19. Silly comment here... but you're new to planted tanks and you're looking into a diffuser. What about your lights, substrate, plant choices, ferts? Planted tanks are a balance and everything is part of the equation. Also, they are like riding a bicycle and we all started off on trikes...Keep it simple and start slow as we want you to enjoy your tank!!
  20. You could try black polystyrene..perhaps a craft store or a plastics supplier?
  21. Black acrylic might be very expensive as you would need cast and thick. You can get black 4mm coroplast, cut it to size and it works well outside the tank. It's available at Home Depot, Rona.. or make friends with someone at a sign shop and they will have pieces..
