  1. Ok, this may be a silly question to most of you, but is it OK to have a brother and sister fish mate? Wouldn't that cause deformations and things like that? The question came up while the wife and I were talking about Cockatiels she's thinking about getting. Does anyone know if that is an issue with them? I know, I know, a Cockatiel isn't a fish but someone here might know. Anyway, I'm more interested in the fish part of the question.
  2. Really? I thought you shouldn't fill your tank directly from tap water. Does Prime work so quickly that Chlorine doesn't effect you fish? Or is it that Chlorine only effects your fish if they're exposed to it for long periods? In other words, I don't need to let my water sit for a day before adding it to my tank if I use a de-Chlorinator?
  3. Wow, that looks awesome. Amazing work patrick. Very well installed and planned. I was looking into these backgrounds but they're too big for my 32G and besides that, HOLY COW are they expensive.
  4. I picked up some dry ferts myself as part of a deal and I was given this link which helps a quite a bit in regards to neutients and fertiizers. Nutrients and Fertilizers I haven't used the ferts yet, I'm still going through some liquid ferts first. But I hope the link helps.
  5. I've posted some links to my picks on another topic. My first planted 32G tank Well that's a bummer about the angels. Geez, there sure are a lot of fish that don't get along with others when they get older, eh?
  6. Nice Pleco. That is a "Bristlenosed Plecostomus" to us non-latin readers, right? Plecos are cool. I'm definately going to get one for my next project.
  7. Wow what a beaut. Very nice flower ray. I think I missed something here though, what happen to the poor thing? And you're saying her counter-part is smaller at 6" Diam., how big is she?!?
  8. That makes lots of sense. Thanks for the explanation Qattara.
  9. I didn't know you shouldn't feed your fish before a move. Why is that?
  10. This is true that the Danios are too quick, but the Angelfish is only about 1.5" anyway so there isn't much of a threat there, is there? I hoping that by the time the Angelfish gets bigger I'll have a real nice big tank and I can get a couple more. Then I may try my hand at breeding. It sounds like people are having fun with it.
  11. Ohh too bad. I wish I was online yesterday and seen this post. Blackbelt: I live near pisces and seen what they call Dwarf Gouramis. They're not what I've seen from books and stuff. Now I'm not a pro by any means, but if you go to Big Al's on 32nd they've got (or had) some real nice Dwarf Gouramis there on the weekend. Nice blues and reds on them. Here's a pic of the one I got from there. Male Dwarf Gourami Much nicer than the ones at pisces IMO. Unless Pisces has changed their tank, the one you have is silvery blue coloured, right? But don't get me wrong, the gouramis at Pisces are nice too.
  12. Leave them alone???? Really? I'm told that they breed worst than guppies. I wouldn't mind a few but if they over-run my tank then I wouldn't be happy. Besides, my Flying Foxes are enjoying the little bit of algae I do have in the tank. I think for now, I'll keep up with the snail battle and remove them as I see them. So far so good, I can only find a couple a day.
  13. Thanks for the tip Raj. I do have it on the bottom of my tank but it's only partially barried in the gravel. Just enough I think to hold it down. Most of the stem is sticking out. I was thinking about some driftwood but it's a rather large Anubias and I think I'd need a bigger tank to get a big enough piece of driftwood for it. It should be fine though sticking out of the gravel, don't you think? About 1/2 of the stock is sticking out near the leaves. Also, a bunch of the roots from it have found their way out of the gravel. They kind of float in the current.
  14. Well, I guess it could be that. I do feed the fish a bit and I'm still trying to feel out how much to feed them. I've read that I should feed them enough for them to eat for 2 min. But after that time the Gouramis and the angelfish are still watching the surface for more food , so I add a little pinch more. Maybe I should stop doing that.
  15. Yeah I found out about the snail eggs just recently. One of my original Danios had it's tail chewed up a bit so I moved him to a 3G glass vase (don't have QT yet) for the time being. I also found a snail in my tank so for the heck of it, dropped it in with the Danio. Well it wasn't an hour later there was another one of these sacks on the glass. Being I think the Danio is male, I'm sure it's got to be snail eggs. What's the best way to deal with snails once you have them. The LFS says Clown Loaches would work well but I can't add any more fish to this tank, my stocking levels are full. Well, until I can convince the wife it's time for another tank. :smokey: Yes there is quite the learning curve going on here. I'm learn so much so fast that I'm starting to mix info up. That can be scary so I keep re-reading everything a couple of times t make sure I get it straight. One day, I'll be able to help people out here at AA just like everyone else has helped me. I can't wait to start doing that. I like the feeling I get when I've helped someone out with a problem.
  16. I hope you don't mind but I've got a question regarding this topic too. What exactly is the "Gravid Spot"? I'm assuming it's where the babies would come out. Where would I find it on a fish and do egg layers have gravid spots too?
  17. Thanks for the info, everyone. Hey werner, that sounds great. I can afford $80 to get this going. I take it that 5lb tank is your's now, right? Can you also tell from the following pic if this is a standard CGA 320 connector? I'm told I have a Max Grigg regulator if that helps any? I'm new to this pressurized tank thing. By the way, I say it's a 35lb tank because it's imprinted right on the tank itself (35lb 4 oz to be exact). When I bought it off humpty, he said it was a 20lb tank. Could he be right and I'm mis-reading this whole thing?
  18. Well isn't that interesting. I guess since they won't hurt my fish and I don't have any intention to breed, I'll just leave them be. Besides, they kind of look cool. Hey werner, is there anything you don't know??
  19. :welcome: to AA. I love these people here and I'm sure you will too.
  20. Yeah, I was having troubles too. It lasted 2 days for me. Could have been bad luck on the times I tried. Let me tell you, the jonesing was nasty. I need my dose of AA on a regular basis.
  21. energie: I'm not sure if the paintball places would recharge my tank. It's a 35lb tank so I can't see people walking around with one on their backs. uwish & werner: Well Sprouse sounds like the place to check out. How much did you guys pay to get your tanks refilled, and how big where they? How much did they charge you for the 5lb spare tank? Thanks as always, you guys are the best.
  22. Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I ended up picking up a marble anglefish and a male and female dwarf gourami. They're getting along great with the danios and the flying foxes.
  23. Hi all, Anybody know where in the north east of Calgary I guy can get his CO2 tank refilled? It's a 35lb tank. There's no rush right now as I still have about 800psi in it. That should last a while. I've sent an email to Liquide Gas Canada but they've not got back to me. The wife contacted BOC (they fill the tanks at her work) and they said they would want to hold it for a week to test it first. I don't know if I want to be without my tank for a week. Any suggestions would be great?
  24. Hi all, here are some pics I've taken of my tank. The pics aren't as good as patrick's but at least you can make out the fish. These first pics were when I was setting up my tank. They were taken around Aug. 23rd. http://www.new.facebook.com/album.php?aid=...mp;id=635091875 The Polysperma plant was growing like crazy so I trimmed off a bunch of dead stems off the bottom to make the tank look a little cleaner. These pictures were taken right after the trimming. These pics were taken Sept 14th. http://www.new.facebook.com/album.php?aid=...mp;id=635091875 These are the most recent pics. Right after trimming the plants I bought a compressed CO2 system (thanks humpty) and my plants started growing even faster. Still haven't got my pH down to what I want but it's getting there. I also finished stocking my tank. Inside are now, 6 Longfin Leopard Danios, 2 Siamese Flying Foxes, 1 Marble Angelfish (I Think), and a male and female Dwarf Gourami. Thanks to those who made suggestions on my other topic asking what fish to add. These guys are getting along great. No scraps or anything. These pics were taken Sept 20th. http://www.new.facebook.com/album.php?aid=...mp;id=635091875 Any comments would be greatly appreciated. If you're on Facebook look me up.
  25. Wow, amazing quality in these pics. Patrick, what are you using to take your pics. I love them. Cool fish by the way. They look huge, how big are they really?
