  1. If you're in Calgary, come to Sunnyside - We have Koi, Sarasa, Shabunkin, and Comets for pond fish - which can all be together. We also have other goldfish that are as cheap as 59 cents if he wants to start em small. The above pond fish are priced between $7 something and below $12.
  2. LOL about the two female theory - that was a customer who told me that... BTW, we have a betta in our live plant tank and he is co-existing with three guppies and a yoyo loach - albeit they all have plenty of hiding places...I notice that he is so much more lively and colorful in a filtered tank than his bowl. LOL for Tanker's betta's tricky-devil reflection - too funny
  3. I've heard these myths about Bettas - maybe someone could let me know which are truths and which are bull... -A male betta will attack the other fish in his tank if their fins are more or as beautiful as his -A male betta prefers to have two females bettas with him (what man wouldnt?) Let me know - :well:
  4. A customer wants to help cycle her brand new tank with starter fish in preparation for her Angel Cichlids. Which should I recommend for her, guys?!?! Thank you in advance
  5. I was gazing into the tanks as it was slow going this afternoon, and what I thought was a turd turned out to be a baby Molly!! I looked some more and saw two for sure. They survived the wrath of the filter and of their adults!!! Maybe I was waaay to excited for what it was, but YAY baby Mollies!
  6. BLAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHH!!! Sorry guys, had to grab your attention because I feel like I should clarify what I meant in my last post and apologize... I meant that I dont feel that ALL Petland staff are very well informed, but the staff that are in it because they are fish fans themselves are very knowledgable. In my personal experience some of their staff are more concerned about the sales goals than of the customer caring properly for the fish. I also am not saying that I am perfect or that I know all there is about tanks, that's another reason why I'm here. Thanx, PLEASE dont be offended, I read it over and was like, "I'm sound like I'm a little @#$@$". That was MY experience at Petland and I should be less general when I'm talking about only a few people. They hire people just like any other company, and it's not always the best person suited to the job. :banned:
  7. It's a good place to work because there are no "quotas" or "sales goals" like there was at Petland. No offence to anyone who is currently at Petland, but they seem to not really enforce that their employees know what the heck they are talking about sometimes (I used to work there too, but as a "Pet Counsellor" - your not to blame). I say this because I've had a few customers who have been given the wrong information by Petland - one lady was told she did NOT need a heated tank for her Barbs...One older man had his guppies in an unfiltered, unheated friggen goldfish bowl and was asking me what was wrong with his fish...lol. So without pressure to push fish and aquariums on people, I just have to walk around and actually answer questions the best I can, whether I have to grab a book or another employee. Thats one of the main reasons I am here, to hear your stories and learn from you crazy bast*rds. LOL.
  8. Can't claim I know more than Dennis, LOL. I just saw him looking at our tanks and was feeding him some trivia. :hey:

Yup, in Calgary at Sunnyside Garden Centre I am in the pet department. I used to work at Petland, and am loving this store much better. I joined here because I met Dennis of Gold Aquariums - he was looking at our selection and I started to tell HIM about the Blind Cave Tetra (hey, I thought it was just another "fish browser" - well, he ended up giving ME more information about breeding and other interesting fish info. LOL, loving all aspects about our mini ecosystems. I think of an aquarium as an investment - for your home decor, as a hobby, as a learning experience. Loving this site.
  10. It sounds like "velvet" to me - a fungus related to Ick...Melafix I beleive is meant for bacteria, so try Nox-Ick for fungal infections

  12. I dont know if the last post I put to your question came through...anyways I suggest testing the water using the three basic kits - PH, Ammonia, Nitrogen. I think you have high nitrite levels by the sounds of it (from too many fish, too much food / waste). If it is the nitrite, do a water change and add "cycle", high ammonia you add an ammonia sack to your filter, and for a high PH level (tap water PH is 7.6 - 8.2 when fish need approx 6) add aquarium salt.
  13. Maybe its an old wives tale, but apparently odd numbers encourage schooling
