  1. I do water changes every 2 days 30% one and 50% the next, ect. I feed 4 times a day 8am NLS discus pellets, 12pm NLS flakes 5pm NLS discus pellets 9pm Hikari Frozen blood worms or Hikari frozen brine shrimp. They are in a 30 gallon hex right now with an XP3 filter. They will be moved to a 75 in the next 3 weeks once I get it set up for them and get the cichlids out. They are all an average of 3-4 inches. Or some breeders send them to LFS which is where some of mine came from. I love them the way they are, stunted, peppered doesnt matter to me.
  2. The last 2 are the Red Turqouise that I got from fish4fun(psst I think he may have some more for sale) and the lighting does make the blue "pop". Here is the ugly according to some people they just euthanize "cull" or stunted discus. I love them and here is a pic of the ugly sorry I forgot to add them( I love them the same if not more)
  3. Heres some pics of my discus. Thanks to Dalray,TanisD and fish4 fun for the fish. It has been an adventure!
  4. :welcome: to AA. I live in the huge town of Manning. Nice to have some more northern folks on here!!
  5. I have a utility pump(50.00 from peavey Mart) for draining out the 70 and 75 gallon so then I only have to bucket about 1 or 2 pails of poo water out. They I move the pump to the tub and put a bucket under the tap and let it run(with the digital thermometer of coarse). I mix my prime and rift salt in a measuring cup then add before I start the water. This pump is sure gonna come in handy with the 225 :smokey:
  6. I went today and they have just a teeny tiny fish selection and not very many tanks. But its still nice to see a place in G.P that actually has sales...16.00 a plant at the other big pet store is definatly not a deal :smokey:
  7. Ohhhhhhh. I have to go to G.P on Monday to the dentist. Where is it located? I need a new Python as hubby broke the tap piece on my 50 footer
  8. I tried Map quest but it was wrong. Can anyone explain how to get there? I used to live in Edmonton so even if you tell me where it is by that would be perfect! Thanks,
  9. Not all of them are dying just the one. The others I have been trimming off the dead leaves and they actually have new ones growing. I will give it some time to re-coup.
  10. Okay so Iam a total newbie with plants, so here is the big question. I have some swords that are turning yellow, I have only added then within the last 2 weeks to the tank. Tank is a 20 gallon with 18 watt compact which is on for 10 hours, temp was 76(is now 84). I also have a Hagen natural CO2 and added some Flourish root tabs. If I just keep trimming off the yellowing leaves will it come back or should I just pull it? The vals, sagittaria and polysperma are doing great! Thanks for any advice.
  11. Hey! I would be a garbage picker gladly for a beautiful tank like that. Congrats on the awesome find!
  12. :welcome: both of you to AA. I currently have a 75 gallon Lake Malawi tank, and am awaiting impatiently for my husband to bring me about 20 fish from Harold(Fairdeal) today. I will be(hopefully) moving them within the next 3 weeks after some quarantine to the 225 gallon(if I can get it to stop leaking :banned: ) Any questions please feel free to ask, I have learned alot from my short time on the forum.
  13. Manning eh? I've been there once.. I feel sorry for you lol You lived in Grimshaw and only been here once? Your lucky
  14. Hey, I'm still stuck in Manning. I wish my hubby wanted to move back south like I do!!
  15. Hopefully your fry make it....I may need to purchase some from you. I spoke too soon and my cory zigged when he should have zagged. He got stuck in my rena smart heater
  16. I think this is a most excellent idea but one that has to taken very seriously. I would love to finally be able to go into a LFS that I wouldnt cringe at the tanks(no I havent been to Natures corner). I do not intentially breed anything but it has been known to happen and none of the LFS in my area will give me anything not even credit for a fish they can sell for 15.00 a piece. Keep us in the loop as I will be sure to support you if you do go into business and I have 5 tanks! :smokey:
  17. Albino Cory's are awesome...I've had mine for 4 moves and about 7 years now. Love when they zip to the top of the tank and do the big zig zag back to the bottom.
  18. I am currently treating with Parasite clear. I will do another treatment after this one. Just in case it is internal worms, I lost an electric blue today and put down 1 of my male electric yellows. It really is only 1 red empress female, and 1 female and 2 male electric yellows that have the stomach problems. They are all still eating and swimming fine(breeding in fact, 2 females are holding). My Tanzania's and male empress's look fine. I had also in the last couple of months reduced feeding to once a day as I was having an issue with the little white worms on the glass, so I have now again resumed feeding 2x a day and hope to see a difference in the next couple of weeks(if it is worms or some type of internal parasite) If I dont see a change then I will put the effected fish down and keep an eye on the rest for a month or so before I put them in the new tank. Thanks for your input, muchly appreciated.
  19. Hello everyone, I would like peoples opinions about wasting disease. I have read that it is almost incurable and contagious to fish and humans alike. The reason I ask is that some of my electric yellows have started to show signs(sunken bellies) of the disease. I'am treating the whole tank right now for internal/external parasites just in case I am wrong. So how long should I wait to see if they start to gain weight? If they are not showing signs such as my red empress, and Tanzania, are they okay? I am getting fish from other sources to fill the 225 gallon and DO NOT want to contaminate the new fish with mine if they are all going to have it. I guess the big question is do I cut my losses with the fish I have now. Once I'am sure they have wasting disease? I just want to thank everyone in advance for their opinions! P.S I feed them 3mm and 1mm NLS pellets and have started feeding them Thera-A as well.
  20. I only spent about 100.00 on supplies, which is cheaper then purchasing one(which I can't find one tall enough as the tank is 30" tall). I still have a partial pail of cement, and tons of liquid cement color left. I mainly used a screwdriver to shape the rocks, and a hand held torch. When I do my 72 gallon, I will keep track of the expenses and let you know how much I spend. It really is fun to be able to make what you want it too look like. Thanks for the wonderful compliment, and I will be sure to post pics once its in the tank. Yeah, the caves didnt turn out so bad :smokey:
  21. I will make sure the PH is stable for a week or so before I add the fish...I dont want to kill them over some extra water. I cant wait either I'am tired of seeing it sitting empty!!
  22. Sorry I should have been more specific...I am using water softner salt for the first 2 changes. 225 gallons of RO would cost me alot of money x 10. I havent gotten my RO unit yet and it only does 50 gallons a day.
  23. I'am going to make a custom spraybar and do salt twice for 3 days each. Then on to fresh. The reason for the spray bar which will be almost like a shower is that I can't afford the time or water waste that it would take to completely fill and drain the tank 10 times. I will probly put a little less than half and pump water over the top and cross my fingers that it works.
  24. Randy, It wasn't that bad(the styrofoam)I vaccumed the pieces up that were left over. The next one is the 72 gallon discus tank. I put the pictures in order but they didnt come out that way? Hmmm guess I will have to work on it.
  25. Well after much muttering and cement everywhere, I have finally finished my background. I used 2 sheets of 2 inch styro, with some odd pieces added on with silicone. I used 3 10lb buckets of Quickcrete fast setting cement and a bag of concrete(I would not recommend the concrete), and three liquid Quickcrete concrete colors(Charcoal,Brown and Buff). I also used 3 sizes of cheap paint brushes, a pail and some plastic paint holders. I did use some great stuff(expanding foam) and I would also not recommend as you will see in the pics it did not want to cover with cement even after sanding it. I'am actually pretty proud of how it turned out and can't wait to see it in the tank with all the Malawis. Oh and one big thing be very careful if you use a torch, I found out the hard way(see the caves) that silicone is very flammable and the whole thing almost went up twice. Any questions, please pm or ask away on the thread. P.S Sorry about the pictures being all over the place, I'm not 100% sure on how to put them in order!!
