  1. :welcome: Looks like a take I have been looking for. Wonder how I missed it on Kijiji! All the best with the set up. How lots of fun! I have a 18 inch clown knife fish I need to rehome and he would fit real nice in your new tank...hint hint.
  2. I have done simular things also...glad to know I am on the right track!
  3. Wow, your response has been good. I am not the only person with this problem..yah! Sounds like a small design flaw and I have already employed all the suggestions mentioned above...so I guess I am on the right track. A peice of slate on the lid, a small heavy rock inside on top of the media and cleaning sponges regularly... all good. Thanks guys for your imput.
  4. I have noticed two problems, one...the media cage rises dispite all attempts to secure it on the side tabs. and two...the media cage stays down but the sponge and the floss and the bag of carbon all rise and cause the water level to reach critical over flow levels. I don't know if it makes a difference but none of my AC have been purchased new by myself...they are all used...some look pretty old. I used to like AC until this keeps cropping up.
  5. I have some young ( one inch) red texas (blood parrot and Escondido texas parents) and was wondering if, when they grow up, if I can look farward to breeding them together. Seems to me I read somewhere that the red texas hybrid is a mule (sterile). Any comments???... not interested in any personal comments about how terrible hybrids are...thanks anyway.
  6. So, since nobody posted photos, is it safe to assume a true red parrot doesn't exist?
  7. Yes, the sponges on the bottom are Aquaclear sponges...I am tempted to try something new. And, to respond to your side note...I am here everyday! I have made a couple of posts here and there...you just are not looking in the right places
  8. So this has happened twice now. happened once...shame on Aquaclear...happen twice....shame on me. What am I doing wrong. It would seem the square sponge at the bottom doesn't stay put and starts to rise up...pushing all the other media up and so the water level reaches the top and spills over. VERY FRUSTRATING because I can't seem to make that sponge sit and stay at the bottom. My husband says, it is because the sponge is dirty and needs to be rinsed...this seems to help but only for a short time. Any suggestions?
  9. Thanks Harold, I was hoping you would reply to my post. Sounds like I don't want to be shipping to the US. But you also shed some light on why so few people will ship to Canada. Thanks. I always found that frustrating. Irene
  10. So, what if I want to sell a couple fish to a person in the USA. Assuming I learn how to pack it for alive arrival...is there any government red tape I'd have to navigate through? What about importing? Say from over seas, or from the USA for that matter. Someone said I would need some government issued permit. Can anyone clarify? Thanks for your time
  11. I have seen pet shops sell what they call purple parrots...they are deep orange/pink nearly red in color. I have heard that more often than not, these fish are jacked up on hormones to give a faulse color. That in fact the red color will fade to the common orange or light pink we more commonly see. So my question is... Anyone out there with a RED blood parrot, not orange, not pink... but red. And over a size of 4 inches... I would love to see photos so please show them off! I have a king kong parrot...just orange.
  12. Ok, but does that always mean they are a single solid color? Can a fish exhibit more than one color and still be called a velvet? does it also refer to intensity and/or purity of the color (no flaws or blotches in coloration etc)?
  13. I tried researching what "velvet" refers to exactly on the internet and couldn't find an actual definition. What does the "velvet" decribe in terms of color, quality etc?
  14. is the short body texas the result of selective breeding or is this a natrually occuring speices? Thanks for any info. I find this fish facinating.
  15. I have a trio of them and yes, they are nippy, chewed the tails of my nice velvet lyrtail swords. But no more nippy then some small tiger barbs. So I put them in my community cichlid tank, and found they did really well. Could hold their own and actually nobody really bothered them or vise versa. And yes, I would always keep them as tank cleaners...they made quick work of all the algea on the plastic plants in there.
  16. I got some fish that came with some tanks I bought. Have been trying in vain to identify them so I can see to it I find the right species male for them. I don't even know if they are the same species or if I have two different ones. The seller looked at these photos also and he didn't really know. He guessed they were either electric blues, or ruby reds (two species among other he raised) He promises me they are not hybrids. Some appear to have veriticle barring and some have no barring but show some blotching. They could be the same species just changing their skin tone to suite their moods. Any advice would be welcome.
  17. Nice Bengals, we have one in our house also, she is a great mouser, but she isn't as pretty as yours. You'll have to see her when you stop by. Irene
  18. I have a couple of severums who have paired off and have been cleaning a rock and keeping other fish away. Their breeding tubes have dropped...good sign...however they are currently in a community tank. If babies get to free swimming stage they are sure to get eaten...so... Can I move the severums now into a tank of their own? Will this upset them and halt any spawning they had in mind? I have a 110 gallon cycled tank I could move them to....if it is advisable.
  19. I see some absolutely stunning fish in there!!! You should be very proud of that set up!
  20. Fantastic photograph! Should be on a calender. Wow...that is all I can say...WOW!
  21. Ya, I found it at a health food store. Powder form. I make my own frozen food for all my fish also.
  22. Yup, that is us! Oh sure there is room. 80 acres of room, but building a building with running water... ouch!
  23. Hi, fish in the last two images is a Fossorochromis rostratus male. Those photos don't due him justice as he is now sporting his breeding colors. Perhaps I'll try to get more photos of him again. I have tried to talk "management" (my father-in-law) into letting me have a cichlid exibit in the zoo for public viewing, but he has no interest in it. We really don't have a proper facility in the zoo (another heated building with running water) to accomondate such an endeaver. But I'll keep working on him. I would need to build another building for my GuZoo Aquatics idea. But money is just not there.
  24. My role in the zoo itself is minimal. I do the yard maintainance and I have a few animal related jobs, however, I look forward to the rainy days, as those become my favorite days....fish day! I have a good excuse to stay inside and "play" with my fish. Thanks for the compliments on my photos.
