  1. day-glo is available in t8, not t5, you may want to check with your LFS see if they can bring them in. I did the switch on one of my tanks and my plants reacted very positively
  2. its both, kelvin rating deal with colour warmth. The aqua-glo (which I use as an additional bulb to help with fish colour) put out more of a blue spectrum than reds, and plants prefer lower rated kelvin (4,000-6,700). I have noticed that the one tank I own with a HoT5 10,000k bulb gets GSA whereas the tanks I run 6700K get very little. With plants and algea, its more about balance than anything else.
  3. you may want to consider switching to a day glow, which will provide a better light spectrum for your plants. The aquaglow runs at 18,000kelvin while the dayglow gets you to the proper 6700k.
  4. I can't wait to get my filter :P I've got enough bio media to kick start it and add the 9 angelfish and probably 10 red heads, in the long run while I save for a 180 gallon, Ill probably start acquiring more plecos
  5. Hi Folks I decided to start up this 120g tank I had sitting in the basement. The background is black and painted on. Filtration is coming in the mail in the form of a fluval fx5. Still haven't quite figured out what im gonna do for heat, maybe a single 250w heater. The lighting is two cheap 18" single t8 strips that came with my 55g, pretty much just enough to light the tank. I may try growing a couple swordplants just to complete the look. Substrate is playsand from home depot, its quickcrete brand and I din't rinse it. The water is still very clean, and after tomorrow nights water change (can't do it tonight, Ive got a Flames game to go to) it should be totally clear. The fish that will be going in will be my pinoy black angels, pinoy smoky angels and geophagus sp. tapajos "red head". This tank will only temporarily be holding these fish while I source out another 180 gallon tank. Here's a pic of the inital setup - enjoy More to come!
  6. you going to try and grow it emmersed? lol
  7. yeah, like annubias and stuff
  8. well thanks for looking. I ordered the fx5 off big al's online today. I think im going to set this one up regular style and look for a used one to tinker with and try to set it up with dual intakes. On another note, what strength of heater would you use for the same 120g tank?
  9. Bonus! That's awesome! Im gonna go get some monday then You've just made my day!
  10. Im setting up a 120g this week and was planning on getting play sand from hom depot. Anything perticular i should watch for? Any recommended methods? I've previously only used gravel so this sand thing is kinda new. any help is appreciated thanks vince
  11. it would be mighty kind of you to post a link to that thread
  12. can you split the inputs and outputs on these? I really wanted to have dual of both so that i could have one in each corner... I imagine you could. I wouldn't run the filters in series, but splitting each filter should be fine. At this point im considering just getting a single fx5 and twinning the inputs and outputs...
  13. at the moment, I have 2 pairs of sunspot brevis and a tonload of fry growing out. This 120g will be an angel grow out till I can get a 180g, but im gonna set up the filtration, heaters, lighting and substrate as if it were a tang tank.
  14. can you split the inputs and outputs on these? I really wanted to have dual of both so that i could have one in each corner...
  15. If you had a 120g (4ftx 2ft x2ft) and were to use 2 cannister filters to take care of the filtration, what would you use? The tank would be set up as a tangynikan shelldweller tank.
  16. nice pics! thats too bad your male got injured... hopefully he will recover!
  17. im very unhappy about having to leave right at the beggining of the presentation. Who ended up winning the unit?
  18. I know its going to be cheaper, I can get the steel to make it for $55 and I've got a welder buddy that can put it together for me for a fee, Im just a little worried that its not going to have the same holding potential as one designed by a manufaturer. I know going this route will cost me about a third of the price of one from the LFS. Im just wondering if thats the only route other than going to the LFS
  19. Hello folks, I just acquired a 180 gallon tank for free, but I didn't get a stand with it. Does anyone know the best place to get a stand locally, either steel or wood? I'd really like to have the stand before thursday, because that's when the tank is scheduled to arrive and I really don't want to have to lift it twice :P Any advice will be muchly appreciated
  20. UPDATE TIME! Well the parents are still proudly guarding the eggs, the male keeps the other blue acaras on the other half of the 55g they are housed in. He doesn't seem to be bothering anything else in the tank, although some of my angels have small bite marks on them. Im not sure if thats aggression between the angels, or from the acaras. Heres some pics, the fry are now free swimming and the mom never leaves their side. They are getting more and more adventurous, but as the week goes on, they are slowly getting big enough to not fit in most fished mouths. Mom finally butted into my photo session, I think she was starting to get a little peaved about the flash going off repeatadly Thanks, and hope you enjoyed these pics
  21. im wondering if that might be due to an actinic blue bulb. Or mine might just be different. They are really picking up in color, Im almost due for another update
