  1. I bred Geos in regular tap water with great success so you probably shouldn't have to worry too much about using soft water on their tanks. I have used an RO unit over the years for various purpose, and unless I am dealing with specialized fish (e. blackwater cichlids/tetras) I found they bred just fine in Calgary tap water.
  2. Riverfront used to be the place I went, I hear concept is also worthwhile
  3. you are talking about an animal with a porous skin, which gets stressed during transport, thereby reducing the slime coat which offers the animal protection. Even with fish in perfectly good health, this can lead to susceptibility of diseases. you are then transferring them to a different environment, which may or may not be free of pathogens (which are everywhere) in a weakened state. i'm not saying all stores are perfect, but accidents happen, even to healthy fish. all it takes is a bump and they can get sick. As for the stores selling perfectly healthy fish, while this would be ideal, this is also a high stress environment. Between the crowding, the constant movement outside its tank, the stress of being transported to the store, sometimes thousands of miles, I'd be surprised if any animal would fare well under these conditions. This is published information by people a lot more educated than me. What am I getting at here? Maybe this should be a little like the produce section at your grocery store, if you buy a rotten fruit, don't be surprised if it tastes bad. It's not the stores fault for selling fruit that may have spoiled, rather the consumer, for not paying attention to what they are buying. But hey, I'm all for a nanny state... I just don't like the costs that come with the extra protection...
  4. I've got some as well, and some tiger vals.
  5. Like john said, I don't add salt to my tanks. the water we have in alberta is already fairly hard (mine tests out at approx. 200-300tds depending on time of year) my aytinjo's spawn with no help from me, and babies hatch in the parents tank without my help. http://www.calgary.ca/UEP/Water/Pages/Drinking-water/Water-quality/Water-Hardness-FAQ.aspxhere is alink to water hardness in Calgary. I wouldn't bother modifying water, and I don't in most cases. also, unless you are testing your water, its pretty much a shot in the dark. hope this helps

  8. theres a day for international women? how do you get classified as international? Do you have to have multiple citizenships? Or maybe just lots of stamps on your passport, for those ladies who like to travel?

  11. Hello, does anyone know where I can get my hands on Fenbendazole? Either locally (Calgary) or via mail order? Any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks Vince
  12. Congrats, Celebes are easy to breed, but are hard in terms of saving fry. 12 fry is quite the success.
  13. use peat moss from the garden store, jiffy pellets (used to start seeds) are great, you add water, break the nylon wrap and dump the peat in your container. Add water, wait for it to drop to the bottom. Once the peat is at the bottom, add the container to the tank (I use glass containers and drill a hole in the rubber lid, this way they sink on their own). Very little peat moss should make its way out. here is a good video
  14. do you remove the media basket from the filters then?
  15. I really like you filter mods, that is absolute genious. I might have to try this in some of my tanks...
  16. One of my angelfish pairs decided to pose for me, the picture turned out, enjoy!
  17. Cool! would you be able to show us what the tank set up looks like, in case someone (me) might be interested in replicating your work? (imitation is a form of flattery I should let you know)
  18. I don't think they are organising a show as well as the auction this year. I believe this was due to lack of volunteers.
  19. The last batch was a wipe, after they started hatching, they started disappearing. They laid eggs Saturday night, and they laid them on the breeder cone once again. I removed the breeder cone and placed it in a hatching bucket. The eggs we're not physically touched. I added 10 drops per gallon of peroxide to kill any bacteria. so far, all eggs appear good. this is best results I have had yet.
  20. I just read through your post and I am amazed. I suspected many of the points you wrote, including small quantities of chloramine during storms or big melts. I also do not use conditioner and haven't for about 5 years. Thank you very much for confirming some of my suspicions.
