  1. I have sand from the west coast in my tank, heres a pic, I still have some at the inlaws place if your interested, I have seen salt water ray's dig and hide in this stuff.
  2. Ive built a tank out of glass doors out of a book shelf unit its a perfect cube 18" x18" x18". The only problem with it is that its the glass that shaters if you crack it. I learned the hard way trying to cut a peice for a partition. I still find glass in the kitchen. I figure that as long as nothing hits it too hard I will be ok, that and its also a teranium so it only holds a little under 5 galons. Iam always on the look out for stray peices of glass, I have to ask where did you find the jewlary store?
  3. Wow I didint expect this kind of response, but its good. Now Oxquo do you have a pic of your flower horn. Iam curiuse to see what it looks like. Ive learnd to not trust the internet. Iam sure many of you have guessed that Iam new to cichlids. That is why I asked about hybrids. I was wondering about Blood Parrot's they dont seem to look natural. I keep wondering by them in stores and I want to get some but some thing is saying to me that they were breed to look like that. Also do blood parots breed? And what 2 fish make a parot? Oxquo you are totaly right about dying and it should be a punishable crime. I also agree that if you are selling a hybrid, it should be labled acordingly, with the 2 types of fish that were used to create it. "That doesn't change the fact that people breed dangerous and unhealthy crossbreeds." Mighty Prawn Can you give a example of this, I imagin you would say the Blood parot, are there others?
  4. Iam sorry I think I missed the point of the video. I didint know that hybrid's could continue breeding. I always thought that once you a species mixes that the offspring would not be able to have any more. I didint know oscar's were hybrids. So basicly if a breeder were to say this is a mix of this fish with this fish it would be ok.
  5. I was reading another post in another section and there was a comment made that got me thinking. I dont want to post were it was or by who, I dont want to point fingers or get any one mad, but here it is, "or worse yet....a hybrid." Why the strong back lash against hybrid's? Iam sure every one keeps fish that will inter breed, so what I also wanted to know is what do you do when it happens? I mean ususualy the fish created by mixing will not will not be able to have more fry, so what Iam trying to understand is whats the big deal.

    Pots

Any body ever use the teracota clay pots in there tanks. I thought I read some where that they make great caves and hiding spots, Iam sure I have seen pics of it too. Is there any thing that has to be done be for they are added to a tank, I washed them and let them sit in water for abot a hour or so. Is that enough?
  7. So I did a little re decorating today and added a nice big teracota pot and acouple smaller ones, made some nice caves, I thought that that might make them a little more at home. So now my other question is how long before some of the couples in there start getting down to buisiness? Is there some thing I need to do or just keep them feed and warm. As for the digging they almost got through about 5 inches of sand, on one side of the tank.
  8. Why do cichlids dig in sand? I have a black sand substrate, and I have noticed that a couple of the bigger fish are takeing the sand in their mouths and spitting it out close by. So why do they do that?
  9. My common pleco tries for the lid on a nightly bassis. He usualy slams in to it and then goes back down. I had a arrowana that decided to make a escape and hit my dog right on the head. Harley had no idea what hit him. the strange thing was that he some how got through a opening about 1.5 inches, and he was about a foot long at the time. The pleco has been doing that from the day we got him.

    Moss

Won't that start to smell bad after a while?????????? But where do I get the moss in the first place? Thanks for the tip

    Moss

I need some moss to cover some wires and dirt in my new tank. any one know of any stores that sell moss or any thing that will give me a nice green cover on some dirt at the water line. Or if you have any other ideas for a plant that will cover dirt let me know? Heres alittle info in the tank, its a 18x18 cube witha partion for water to land about half way in the middle. The water level is about 5inches and the dirt for the plants is a little shy of the water line, that is where I want to place the moss. I also want to hide some wires for a power head on one wall.
  12. I think you are all right. I havint seen any plant lose and every thing seems to be growing nicley. Iam going to say that if it was air bubles that it was spitting out then it would have a bad effect on the plants. So Iam not going to worry about this any more. I talked with river front and they said they would speak with the rep next time he came in. I will have to stop by and see them soon. Thanks all Lukas
  13. I am injecting CO2, with a power head, but the up take for the fx5 is on the other side of were the power head is.
  14. I've have my fx5 for a couple of weeks now and have had no issues. However I have noticed lately that the filter spits out bubbles. Normally I wouldn't have a problem with this other then its a planted tank with co2. I have tried reseting it acouple times and still its blowing bubbles. Has any one else had some thing like this happen??????????? Oh I have checked all the connections for water and air leaks and nothing. Thanks L

    Fluval FX5

I realy like my fx5, I got one after my 403 crashed a couple of weeks ago. The only mistake I made was to not keep my sponges from my old filter, took a couple of days to bring things back to normal. But no problems yet with it. I have a 90g and I found that the clips that hange over the trim fit very nicely. How big of a system did you set it up on Medicdude?
  16. Defiantly check at a glass shop, they will cut it to your spec and I'm sure that they will be able to fit a hinge in to it for you or at least some sort of slider.
  17. Thank you, I guess thoes are out. What about giant vals? Iam guessing they would be like putting a lawnmore in to my tank.
  18. Does any one keep pacus, with plants. are they plant safe???
  19. Not when I called it was 599. They had renas for the same price. Maybe the guy on the phone wasint looking too hard. Wouldint be the first time.
  20. I have to say this is a wicked filter, and best price in town at river front, 320 or so after tax, it was like 600 at pet land.
  21. FX5 it is, river front after work. Thanks
  22. Ok like the title says my Fluval bit the big one tonight. And Iam not too sure what to replace it with, I like the Ehim filters any one have experiance with them, and know where I can get one at under 300$????? If so let me know by the morning I know its a short dead line but I will have to pick up a filter right after work. At the moment there is only power heads for circulation.
  23. Definatly not a rope fish, I have 2 large ones and it did not act or look like. But a good guess. Not a florida green eel either, this guy was only about 5 inches in length and the he was about the width of a key ring. Very thin.
  24. I changed the pic to a head shot. It died a while ago and I pulled it out of the water and let it dry out. Hey tortis I did pick it up at river front, if you can ID it for me any chance that they are getting any more in???? Or if any one else in the city has them??? Thanks Lukas
  25. Not a snake that I know of, I was told its a bottom feeder and would live in my sand bed. I did see it dig it self into the sand, acouple times. Its about 5 inches long and ohh I would say maybe 3 or 4 mm wide. Verry tiny.
