  1. It is a myth -- bettas have been found in puddles but this would be due to some sort of trauma where they would find there way to a puddle in desperation. Those bowls are horrible -- much too small. WHat's worse though is that they don't have any hiding holes for the betta - he needs somewhere to hide if he feels threatend. And while you don't need a filter - you can tell by those pics that the water is filthy -- it needs to be cleaned often! And a heater is always a good idea no matter where you live becuase if there was a suddon temp. drop for any reason this could be devastating!
  2. d0hb0y, one of the best things for fixing fins is aquarium salt =)
  3. Please tell me this is a joke. Bettas certainly are not happy in cups - and especially not with 'sludge' -- they need clean water or their skin will be burned by amonia -- sounds fun to me. They need a MINIMUM of 2.5 gallons -- some don't do well in larger spaces because they need a lot of hiding spaces to feel comfy. There are of course the anomaly that will enjoy the smaller places but it is certainly NOT the best for their situation. They get upset at water change time because of the methods usd to clean their tank - you need to do it with at the least trauma you can. I use a hose to syphon the watre out and then do the same to put it back in - they barely notice =)
  4. My first betta didn't eat for the first 6 days I had him! It's a lot for them to come to a nice home and be fed properly. You should always soak pellets in water for at least 5 minutes before feeding - then if you want to cut them it's really easy =)
  5. I recently bought some female plakats from Fishclubgirl. She met mw near my town as she was on her way to a fish auction -- this was really handy for me and I really appreciated it =) She's really sweet and she was a joy to meet with -- and the betta girls are adorable too =) (And I got some awesome plants) So - if you were thinking of going plakat - go to fishclubgirl - you won't be dissapointed. =) Mermy
  6. Who called you about it? Maybe they thought they didn't look so hot because they were expecting petstore type bettas and were surprised by the shape and colour of them lol.
  7. My mouth literally dropped open when I read this - that's CRAZY! What are you naming him?
  8. I've looked at this and wondered if it would work for a betta? If it wasn't filled to the top would there be enough fresh air in there? And could you fit in a fully submersible little heater?
  9. Here's a link to a little blog I created to show how to put together a dividedtank for Bettas. This is DIY for dummies - really basic. http://blondebloggings.blogspot.com/2009/1...or-dummies.html
  10. I've actually heard that bettas don't like water that's too soft. What ever water you use just make sure it's consistant. They will get used to whatever it is. I have acreage water that is uber hard and my boys like it just fine =)
  11. I was at petsmart yesterday and saw a gorgeous CT - he was blue, purple and pink (or at least that's what he looked like - their lights there always distort the colours). I didn't get him because I am getting a halfmoon from aquabid -- but I can't stop thinking about him. I know somwone will get him - but I sure hope it's a betta lover and not someone who will stick him in a little bowl =(
  12. I have a 20 gal divided into 3 areas - in the middle section I have the filter and heater. I am actually redoing it right now because I didn't silicone the dividers in well enough so my boys got through and had a smack down -- now they are in little 2 gallon tanks while they heal =(
  13. Where are some places to buy betta in Central Alberta (Red Deer - Edmonton) I know of only PJ's and Petland - and I would choose PJ's of those 2 because their bettas may be kept in small container - but at least htey aren' dirty cups like Petland. Other suggestions? Thanks
  14. I had a fish disaster last month - long story short I knew nothing about fish - guy at pet store told me I could keep 8 feeder goldfish in a 2.5gal bowl -- fish obviously started dying - I started doing research and then fell in love with Bettas =) I have one Betta right now and I've just ordered 2 more (I am cycling their tank right now - a 20gal that I will divide). I am afraid that this will be the start of quite the obsession =) I spend forever right now online learning about bettas and watching videos and pics =)
  15. I'm setting up a new tank and I'd love to get some ideas -- Show us your tanks =)
  16. I am so glad to have found this site! I am a Betta Noobie - but betta lovah! I live near Ponoka (but origanally hail from Red Deer). That's all
