I had some mbuna as young teenager 3 of them survived to about 6 years and change. They all died in the 6th year. One refused to eat and wasted away. The other two were found mouth wide open, dead. Im guessing they would of lived longer if I knew as much about fish food now as i did then. They were petsmart cichlids as well, the male grew a decent hump for a mbuna. I have some shelldwellers that are at least 3 years old. Im guessing it depends on the type of fish that they are.

Ive never been a part of one before, and it sounds like fun. I would love to see what other ppl could do, limit tank size to say 10 to 20 gallons and let your water do the talking! Let me know, I would try anyones fry or i always have a bunch of diffrent kinds.

Yeah to keep buying filter media they reccomend is expensive. Its akin to getting the engine flush before your oil change at a lube joint. Good mod. Simple but looks effective!

I have a few tanks with straight black sand and a few tanks with varying degrees of white and black sand. But my fav is the white carib reef sand that is powder like. The raspeberry heads leave nice lil impreints in it, as do the gobies

So far I have a blue pad in the bottom tray with a lil biomax on top, the middle is filled with scrubbies and the top tray is all biomax. \i wish there was a simple test to see the population of the beneficial bacteria in your system, like a agar count or sumthin

I am very interested in addind one to my 180 gallon. Anybody have any advice? I hear the 9 watts are too small to be really effective, Is this true? What kinds do people own on AA?

Problem was chuncks of broken media had lodged themselves around the impeller. Cleaned out and it actually worked again. Very happy now, it made a bad saturday much worse yesterday. Does anyone use the water polishing pads? I use the blue ones till they get clogged(which is fast) and sometimes i run them without. What do you guys use in your trays? Thanks for your help! The fx5 is doing what it does best now, move water!

I have a fx5 that started blowing micro bubbles with very lil flow. I broke it down changed half the sponges and rinsed the other half(its not thwe only filter on the tank). Gave the biomax and pre filter rings a rinse in tank water as well. Put it all back together filled er up and plugged it back in. It made a noise for a second than nothing at all. No water is being moved at all. Im really regretting getting this instead of a more expensive eheim i really wanted. Any of you fx5 junkies have any tips on what I should do? I have no reciept anymore, no mateer how hard i look I cant find it.
