Usually I feed my fry just crushed flakes and crushed nls. But I'm a big believer in food diversity, and these microworm sound like a good way for some "fresh" live foods to be introduced. I will take a starter for sure. I don't have a lot to trade plant wise. I have a lonely melegris shell dweller who is a fine specimen I'm gonna say she is a female. Let me know what you think.

So I just wait till they are free swimming and feed them cushed NLS? Just like my multies? Will feeding them microworms increase the survival rate? Are microworms easy to culture? Thanks for your advice!
  3. I am so glad I joined this site. It has a lot of "crazy" fish people like me haha. Perfect. I've traded with members already, I've bought and sold with members already. I've gotten and given advice from members already. I've picked up fish that I never heard of before off members. Never will I buy off Big Al's again and let them make me feel stupid for asking questions, I am free! No suggestions, just really love being a part of Alberta Aquatica!!!!!

What do I have to feed the newly hatched fry in 3 more days? Or do I at all till egg sacs leave? So many questions. Jvision I notice u produce your own live food, is that for mostly fry or all your fish?

Yeah he is still being real nice to her. In fact when I fed them this morning, she refused to leave the opening of her new shell. So after the male ate he brought her over a pellet of NLS and spit it at her. She readily accepted. Than he broke up a pellet around her and she gladly accepted that as well.

This I would take as a sure sign. :smokey: not limited to shell dwellers - also us cave dwellers :smokey:
  7. Stunning plecos, I am excited for Saturday when my vampire pleco comes home!
  8. Great examples of a great little fish. I have trouble sexing with the slope of the head method, and I'm far from a expert but I would say pic 3 is a male? Am I right?
  9. That's the big leagues of fish collecting. Saweet fish!
  10. Agree with RD, OB peacocks were created with some mbuna genes. But I also understand where u are coming from. My mbuna tank had little overall agression. There was a pecking order and the fish fell in line. Although if there were problems in the mbuna tank they were more severe. My peacock males in my 90 gallon have not stopped fighting since day one, its turned me off peacocks a little to tell you the truth.
  11. Here's my experience if it helps anyone. I grew a small albino pleco out with a bunch of peacock fry. They lived together happily for 8 months. At that time I put the pleco in my shell dweller tank to clean up alittle.two days later I put him back with the peacocks he grew up with. Sometime within the next few days I noticed they had killed him! Why?
  12. I'd like to see some pics of them colored up, I'm sure it looks amazing!
  13. I grew up some peacock fry in my "multi" tank for a month or so. Much to the "multies" dismay. The ones that "learned" to stay away from the shells did fine. If this helps.

Yeah I think so too! She will not leave one of the males shells. She now has black blotches on her body. Male is being extra nice at this point.

Spawning behaviour? So today as I was watching the occies the big male went over and obviously convinced his favorite female to come over to his side of the tank and check out his shell bed. This has never happened, no other occie has ever been allowed over on his side. And now she is in one of his shells and it almost seems like the male is leaning his "boy parts" into the opening of the shell for a few seconds. What do you guys think?

Thank you for your advice as well, winging it? Can u explain Spawn aid to me?

Thanks for your advice jvision. What are the chances my male is infertile? He is otherwise a stunning "occie". As soon as he leaves his 12 inch square territory and swims near the females they all race out to greet him, shimmering and shaking all around him, nipping at his belly, and trying to get him to come in there shells. Does this sound like the females are willing?

Yeah I've tried most of the mentioned techniques. Except spawn aid what is that exactly? I've also tried the best advice "patience" but its not working!
  19. Does anyone here breed any shelldwellers?

Does anybody have any tips on how to breed these golden occies? I have a group of 4 in a 55 gallon. I believe there is one male and 3 females a great ration. There is often breeding behaviour on the females part but all the male does is darken the lines at the edge of his fins. Any advice

Small plecos all around.
  23. I agree with jvision rinse the media well before using in your own tank. Since its extra filtration though, if u got a deal just buy new media for a little insurance.
  24. IME it depends on the personality of the individual fish. Being all male u will always have fights I would just watch for eye biters!
