  1. I am so sorry. It is devastating when there is such a big loss. There are lots of highs in the hobby and plenty of lows.
  2. This Christmas I lost my betta "Elton John". He was six years old. I have one betta, who is the king of my 110g angel tank, that has to be 5 1/2 years. Both were pet shop fish. Elton was in a large bowl with plenty of java moss with filtration. He was quite lazy. The one in the angel tank is the most active betta I have seen. He is constantly on the move. These two bettas were in totally different environments, not sure why they are so long lived.

    Hello! I'm New!

    Welcome to the community!
  4. Thanks for the info. Think I will try champagne yeast ... the great yeast hunt starts!
  5. I have been reading all I can about DIY co2 recipes. There is many out there. Can anyone share one that has worked well for them? I have used the basic one - sugar, yeast, water. I find I don't get much life out of a bottle. Some recipes suggest a buffer, molasses, etc. I would really like something that lasts more than 4-5 days.
  6. I use plastic grates for fluorescent lighting, bought at Rona or Home Depot, in the lighting section. It is very strong and fairly easy to cut to size. The extra you can use as tank dividers when cichlids go bad lol.
  7. LOL by "real moss" I mean the terrestrial kind.
  8. I have two planted fluval chi, love them but others don't. The pebble tray at the top is very fun to plant. One has a small fern and java moss, the other has lucky bamboo and java moss. Think I may try real moss this spring in one of them. I have mine next to a window and they do great. The older of the two is having a bit of hair algae problem for the first time in over a year. I rescaped and moved some plants into it and I think this is where it came from. Thinking of trying some excell and maybe co2. The rest of the algae types are easily taken care of by ram snails and trapdoor snails. Buying the new tops for the chi is important, glad they came out with them.
  9. Very nice fish! Makes me want to replace my beast sized plecos with something more interesting.
  10. Sounds like graduation from playschool to grade school lol
  11. Hello, What area do you live in? I have some syno I may be interested in selling, as long as you have a big tank.
  12. Good thread, they seem to be interesting lil critters! I will be looking forward to hearing about any culture info when you get them.
  13. I agree, he was awesome! Way to go! I guess I play "Queen" next time!
  14. I do not know who Anthony Robbins is, don't need more motivation lol. I told my bettas, if one happens to win, they get a sacrificial virgin ...
  15. That is so not fair to use music to inspire! It's game on ... I am going to play "Dirty Dancing" for mine!
  16. Hope you make it to the meeting, more bettas are betta!
  17. You have met some quality people. Nice job on the tank, keep up the good work!
  18. I have 20-30 and they range from 1" to 1 1/2".

  19. I have had success growing things on driftwood using a technique I learned from out door gardening. I use a hole saw and drill holes in the driftwood in a desired place. Use a chisel and remove the drilled wood. I then fill the hole with an appropriate sub-straight, plant the desired plant and top off with a layer of sand. It actually looks quite nice!
  20. Welcome! Some really helpful people hang here!
  21. I second pool filter sand. The tank cleared in a matter of hours, without rinsing. I have used play sand but it took 3-4 days for the tank to clear.
  22. Welcome to the site! Delburne is a nice little town!
  23. I have had my share of battles with Ich! The lifecycle is 12 to 16 days, depending on the temperature. You need to keep treating until the cycle is complete to make sure there are not any cysts remaining in the sub-straight. I did not use any medication, salt and high temperature ( I went up to 83-84 degrees). I had a surprising outcome from the higher temperature, it caused my Festivum to breed!
