I agree with investing in an aqua clear mini. I have a male betta in a 2.5 gal wave tank which is heated and has an aqua clear mini filter installed. I only do weekly water changes and he shares the tank with 3 endlers, two shrimp & a zebra snail. I'm sure someone on this forum would have a filter for sale.

I have stopped filling up the glass bubble counter. Will this cause any damage or excessive wear and tear on the system. I'm not sure if the bubble counter can be taken off altogether? I use a glass diffuser in the tank so it's quite easy to see how much C02 is going in the tank. I just want to be sure not filling the counter will not cause any harm. Any comments?

Welcome enjoy the hobby!. You may end up needing the scratched tank for a grown out tank or quarantine tank down the road. Would not suggest using it for a display tank.

The wood will eventually sink. You can simply weigh the wood down with a couple heavy rocks in your tank. Will probably only take a week or two and you can remove the rocks. That's what I have done in the past.

I purchased a couple of expensive male guppies on the weekend and put them in a quarantine tank with some new tetras. They now have split tail fins. What causes this if you rule out fin nipping by other fish?? Will the fins regenerate? Is there anything I can do to? I've never kept guppies before.

Good to know. I agree it is a PITA. It's always better with C02 to take every precaution you can.

I have a glass bubble counter (approx. 2 inches high) attached to my regulator. I fill it with about 1 1/2 inches of water. Is it normal to have keep topping the water level up. I have to do so every 7-10 days or so.

He's not trying to sell them, he has info on where to get them. That's correct. Also prices are dependent on what you want ie size, modifications, etc. Blue Ram is a she!!

I recently picked up a 54 gal food grade water barrel with a screw on lid which I plan on using to age and heat my replacement water. This barrel is far superior to anything you will buy at Home Depot, etc. It is not made with recycled plastic. If anyone is interested in purchasing any barrels, pls send me a pm and I will give you the contact information. This guy has various sizes and modifications can be made to most barrels. I had two small holes drilled in the lid of mine so that I can feed the electrical cords into the barrel and still keep the evaporation to a minimum.

I just wanted to pass on two things about this great cleaner. The first is that I mistakenly got some on my wall behind the tank - it stripped the paint right off!! The second is that I'm horribly allergic to it. I've tried using gloves and within 1 minute of using this cleaner I have a full blown allergy attack. I can't believe it. I guess someone will have to clean my equipment for me!!

Good to hear - leaves more $$ for other aquarium related stuff! Why do these lights last so much longer than regular fluorscent or even power compacts??

Just wondering how often these lights should be replaced if they are running 12 hrs per day on a planted tank?

I'm from Oshawa too!! I go home every year usually in the summer. My brother lives there and has 1 freshwater tank running.

[The cause................................. My bubble wand at the surface and no o2 in the tank... I don't run any airstones. I use a variety of different filters - mostly canister. What caused the loss of o2 in the water?? Not sure I understand how to prevent this. I'm thinking of putting an airstone in my discus tank.

I'm currently setting up my second discus tank - 54 gal with white sand and manzanita branches. I've ordered 6 adult discus from Upper Canada Discus in Ontario. They are the suppliers of Wayne Ng's strains. They are being shipped the first week of April. I thought I was fish crazy before I got my first discus now I'm not sure what I am - you want more and more ... Good luck on your new venture!

I'd like to set up some kind of system to make water changes on two tanks a bit easier since they require lots of water changes! Two 50 gal tanks with discus. The two tanks are in separate upstairs bedrooms. I thought I could put a trash can or barrel (50 gal) into the closet in one of the bedrooms. What would you suggest that is available locally? Use a regular aquarium heater for heating. What can I use for circulation and stabilizing the ph? What can I use to get the water from the barrel to the tanks?? I can use my python for removing water from the tanks, just need to know how to get new water into the tanks? Question for discus keepers - if the ph of my tap water is very close to the ph in the tank, can I use the python for draining & filling? I have not tried this yet as I'm being very careful with the water changes.

I broke down last weekend and purchased a very young SAE (1 1/4") that I hoped would eat the hair algae that is growing on my plants in a newly set up tank. This fish shows no interest in eating algae?? what gives?? too young?? Is there a specific deficiency in the tank parameters that causes hair algae?? Tank has only been set up since Jan 1.

Can you give us specifics? Are the specials advertised somewhere??

I currently have an aqua clear mini runing on a 2-3 gal. nano tank containing 5 rasbora galaxies. This filter is still creating too much current and I lost one fish to the filter. Anything smaller which would give adequate filtration? Can I decrease the flow on the aquaclear (it is already placed on the reduced flow). I was thinking of putting some filter floss into the intake pipe? Would this slow down the flow? This may be a pain to clean having to get the floss out? Any suggestions?

OK this time around I'm going to remove the eggs which were laid yesterday in my community tank. This pair lays eggs every month but the rainbows and cories always munch on them. I'm planning on moving the driftwood with the eggs into a 15 gal. probably tomorrow evening. I'll let papa enjoy fanning them until then. Do the fry like java moss? As far as food, I was going to start them on canned green beans. Should they be rinsed first before putting into tank? Can you just drop the beans into the tank?
