  1. Thanks everyone. I picked them up @ Riverfront in early January. One is a Green Tefe and the other a heckel. They are approx. 4". They started eating flake & pellets within a couple of days after bringing them home. They will eat anything you give them.
  2. Anyone know a source in Canada or Calgary to buy these two medications. Want to treat my wild discus before putting them in the main tank. Not sure if PraziPro is pure praziquantel?
  3. It's a blue diamond. I'm hoping to get a couple of Ocean Greens in the summer when I can have them shipped to Calgary. They are definitely one variety I want.
  4. Day 12 and everyone seems happy. Picture came out a little too small. How do I enlarge it before posting?
  5. I assume you are doing a fishless cycle and adding something to the water ie. ammonia to keep the biological media alive. Running it for a week with nothing to feed the bacteria will do no good. Also, adding water from an established tank is not beneficial. It contains nothing in it to help the cycling process. All it adds is possibly nitrates. This is information I have gained from various members over the past year in setting up new tanks.
  6. I have a breeding pair (have wigglers right now). The female is much lighter in colour than the male. The male is brilliant yellow and the female very pale yellow.
  7. Anyone using the AquariumPlants.com regulator?? I have been using this regulator with a 10 pound tank since September 06 and have had no issues. I have not had to touch the system. I had the pressure set at 5 (I assume this is pounds) and was using about 2 bubbles a second. Over the past five days, I have either been getting no C02 (it actually stopped) or too much C02. When I spoke with a rep from Aquarium Plants, he indicated that they are finding the regulator needs to be set closer to 10. I adjusted my system to 8 and was able to get the C02 running again. However, the regulator is connected to a selenoid which turns off the C02 with the lights. The past couple of days, even when the system turns off, the C02 continues to flow (about a bubble every 5 seconds). Has anyone had these problems?? The tank is 75 gal and the C02 and lights run for approx 12 hours. Another issue I wanted some advice on is whether to run the C02 continuously so I do not have ph swings. When I test the ph in the tank in the morning before the C02 starts, it is 7.6 (typical of Calgary water). When I test it in the evening after it has run all day, it measures approx 6.6. The fish (mostly rainbows & cories) do not seem affected by this but I don't think it is the best scenario for them. Is it better to run less C02 for a continuous period??
  8. Connie I bought the same fish at the same auction. I know the breeder in Edmonton. They are taeniatus. I have had them before and have a pair now. Give them some more time to grow and show their great colour.
  9. Thyanks everyone for your suggestions. I gave the plants the bleach solution. The brush algae has turned grey/brown so I believe it is dead. Soaked the plants for 5 min in a 1/19 ratio. The plants have been soaking in clean treated water overnight. Now that the algae is dead, will it come off on its own?? I decided against the SAEs since I have used them before. The ones I had grew very quickly but did keep any algae in check. I had a terrible time trying to catch them in larger tanks when I wanted to remove them. As they grew, they started to harass my large rainbowfish. The fish were so much calmer and less stressed when the SAE were removed. The article I read in The Krib.com suggested that too little nitrate can be a cause of brush algae. I am going to test the levels today.
  10. I have two large anubias plants rooted onto bogwood (one large leaf variety and one small). Unfortunately about half of the leaves have brush algae on the edges of the leaves. I would like to save these plants but need to get rid of the algae. I read a good article on The Krib.com about this algae. It looks like my options are 1) bleach solution 2) introducing siamese algae eaters (cannot do this option as it is a discus tank) or 3) copper treatment. I could place the plants in an empty tank and do the copper treatment or add a siamese algae eater to the empty tank with the plants until the algae is eaten and then add the plants back to the discus tank. Which option do you think would be most effective?? This is the only type of algae in the tank and the other plants and decorations are not affected. I was dosing Seachem Excel in this tank and only very small amounts of fertilizer (poor man's dosing). Any advice would be most appreciated. Thanks,
  11. I have approx. 8 species of rainbowfish in tanks of 75 gal and 50 gal. I would not recommend bosemani for a 25 gal. It is simply not enough swimming room. You could go with praecox, threadfin, furcata or gertrude rainbowfish which are smaller and would be fine in a 25 gal. Make sure you get enough because they are schooling fish.
  12. One thing that might interest them (not sure what grade?) is a tank with adults caring for fry. One tank I have set up is a tang biotype with a colony of multis (shell dwellers) and 2 petricola. Everyone that has seen it, likes it. You can watch all of the generations interacting and see them dart in and out of their habitat (shells and a rock wall). It is a 25 gal. If you would like some info, send me a PM.
  13. It's gonna be nature this time - it's an unexpected surprise and have no tank for them.
  14. Eggs have now hatched. They are hanging from the driftwood - these are definitely the coolest eggs I have ever seen. The yolk sac is not absorbed yet and the male is still protecting them. I hope I can save at least some of them from the other fish!! If not this time, I will get a better breeding site for them - possibly a log where they can stay protected longer.
  15. I knew I shouldn't have added my female to the tank with the male in it. 4 weeks later - eggs!! The eggs are huge, yellow and glow - very cool. Unfortunately they are in my 75 gal community tank and my yoyo loaches are very interested in the eggs - not sure if once they hatch any will survive. But to be prepared in any event - what do I feed them?? Any ideas on keeping them relatively safe in a community tank?? How many days/hours until the eggs hatch? The female is not interested in the eggs at all - is this normal behaviour? The male is guarding and fanning the eggs as if his life depends on it!! Any advice most appreciated!
  16. I'm currently treating a tank of new fish purchased this past weekend for ich. I started the heat treatment two days ago, however I have not added any salt because of the loaches and cories. Would some salt be beneficial and if so, what amount is safe for these fish?? I have raised the temp. to 31 celius which is the highest my heater will raise it. Is this enough? The fish are active and eating well so I'm keeping my fingers crossed. Thanks in advance,
  17. I'm almost sold on starting a small reef tank after spending an hour last weekend @ Red Coral. I'd like to do a 20 gal with some soft coral and a couple of fish. First off, I need a tank & stand. Does anyone know if there is such a thing as a 20 gal bowfront?? I think a bowfront would look really nice for a small reef setup. What is the smallest size of bowfront available locally?? Red Coral indicated I need to keep the tank long as opposed to high to maximize the light source I will be using. Any suggestions on tanks??
  18. I'm running a fluval 404 on the 75 gal in my livingroom. Very pleased with output and is very quiet and easy to clean.
  19. OK I purchased the daylight deluxe bulbs with the 6500K. I also picked up from Home Depot a Phillips Plant & Aquarium T12 bulb. It says its specifically for this use. It is 2700K. The actual bulb is light pink when it is on. Anyone ever used one of these?
  20. I'm looking for recommendations on T12 bulbs available in Calgary. Tank is 75 gal with pressurized C02. I have two light fixtures - both 48". One fixture holds two T12 bulbs (currently has Coralife super daylight 10,000K and one actinic bulb). The other fixture holds 1 bulb (currently has Powerglow light). I know the actinic bulb has to go. The other two bulbs are fairly new. Are these good bulbs to use?? I'm looking for medium plant growth and good colour for the fish.
  21. I was in Westhills Petland last night. They had just rec'd a shipment of rams. They are the nicest I have seen in retail stores. Good colour and a very good size. Even though I need another fish like a "hole in the head", I had to buy one. $13 each.
  22. I set up a 50 gal tank in May 06 with 2.5 inches of this product and at least 1.5 inches of very small river gravel. The aquatic soil is incredibly dusty and will make a horrible mess of your tank unless you cover it with a good layer of gravel. I have not had any chemistry problems.
