  1. I'm going to go with Carib Sea's tahitian moon sand as much as I don't like the $$. Thanks to everyone who replied.
  2. Does anyone have any comments and/or reviews on Aquagiant's black sand that sells for $30 for 22 lbs. The employee indicated it was good for planted tanks but he did not know who the manufacturer was. I'm thinking of having someone pick up some for me over the weekend. Is Seachem's black flourite a better bang for your buck. I'm not planning on planting this tank but unfortunately trying to get inexpensive black sand in Calgary is hopeless. If anyone has bought or used Aquagiant's product, pls let me know what you think.
  3. I agree Dwayne - get as large a group at one time of one or two species of the same size. It is hard to find a big enough colony when you decide to add on. I would do two species in the 180. A 90 is a large tank for 20 juveniles.
  4. Since I'm homebound because of the road conditions, decided to finally post some pictures of my 90 gal discus tank. What you are seeing is a white butterfly, flachen, spotted leopard, blue diamond and a alenquer. [attachm ent=4776:Discus2008_006.jpg]
  5. Very nice and lots of hard work!! My favourite is the second picture - wink wink!!
  6. Thank you. He is spoiled rotten - his own filtered & heated tank and my ragdoll Molly keeps him company (not sure if he really likes this!!)
  7. I have had several different dwarfs at one time or another over the past 3 years. I don't find the quality of these fish very good in Calgary. I am looking for something different. I have rams at the moment in a couple of my tanks.
  8. I'd like some suggestions on what africans I might be able to put in a 3ft 33 gal tank. They will have to share the tank with a pair of albino kribensis. I would like to try some juvenile (1") cyrtocara moorii. I realize they will eventually outgrow this size of tank but from what I have read, they are very slow growers - taking almost 3 yrs to reach half size. Would like something that I could keep in this size of a tank for at least a year. I'm very open to some suggestions. Not really interested in breeding. I posted this in the "african" but can be from any other region as well.
  9. You're best bet, and what I always do before even purchasing a fish, is to go to forums that specialize in what you want to do. For salt, I suggest you log in to Canreef.com and spend hours reading through their library material. Also reefcentral.com is extremely good. Everything you need to know you will find on these forums. They have extensive libraries broken down into very specific topics.
  10. I suspect a good reason for this is your filter cleaning method. Probably the only thing that has saved you is that you have not touched the ceramic rings. Unless your tank is heavily stocked and you are not doing weekly water changes, there should not be any need to rinse your media that often. Just my 2cents worth.
  11. I agree with PIMPDOCTA. I strongly recommend quarantining them from the store. I quarantanied two in a 15 gal for a full six weeks. You also want to make sure that they will eat prepared foods. I strongly suspect that they have parasites but are healthy enough that they are not showing any symptoms. I have had wild and domestic and don't believe that the wilds are stronger. If you add them to your tank right away, it may be months before you see any signs of illness or parasites that they have brought into your tank.
  12. Any chance you're coming to Calgary anytime soon??
  13. I purchased a 10 lb alumimum canister from Natures Corner. It cost $60 in Calgary to fill. Lasted me a full year on a 75 gal tank.
  14. I'm using purchased jugs of RO water @ $5 a jug in a 34 gal. I change out one jug per week so it is costing me $20 a month. One of the reasons I'm selling my reef setup. In tanks this size, pristine water will help with numerous kinds of algae breakouts you can get.
  15. I beleive this is the little fella you sought after. I got two lots of them at the ACE auction myself. Yep, that's the one's i went for, now all i need is to find out who it is in Edmonton breeding them. Michael Pham from ACE.
  16. I thought the auction was extremely well run. It moved along very quickly and there was a good selection of fish, plants & equipment. I came home with 3 pairs of killies, a "gold brick" kribensis pair and some juvenile koi angels. Michael also treated me with 4 "black cories". Thank you to everyone who worked hard all day. Hope to see some of you at Calgary's auction in a couple of weeks.
  17. I have two perculas that spend their evenings nestled down in large pieces of green star polps. I have a fairly large frogspawn but they prefer the GSP. I picked up two wild caughts in Edmonton in November - they have been very easy to care for and have put on some size in 3 months.
  18. Well I added my new babies to their new home last night. 15 adult duboisi in a 90 gal. Not sure when I'll be able to take photos - they are so active and staying very close to one another. I have been debating about putting something else in with them but they are occupying every inch of the tank space. Any tropheus keepers out there??
  19. Most of the plants you mention are not planted but attached to rocks or driftwood so you could choose whatever substrate will best show off the fish you plan on stocking. The vals will grow in almost anything.
  20. If the swordtails are already in the tank, the cories & rainbows can go in together. You may want to hold off on the pleco until you have some algae or supplement with algae tabs.
  21. I have set up a 90 gal tank in an upper floor of my house (not filled yet). It is sitting on a cabinet style stand. It is tipped forward approx. 3/8ths of an inch. What is the best way to level it?? I previously had a 50 gal sitting here and had it on styrofoam and it did not level it. I'm assuming you would level it from the very bottom ie. the base of the stand??
  22. I'm setting up a 10 gal for a friend's daughter for her birthday next month. I'm wanting some suggestions from members who keep smaller tanks on some interesting inhabitants for the tank that can be purchased in town. Want some ideas on livestock that is interesting to watch, relatively easy to care for and will not outgrow the tank.
