  1. just made it home from our Mediterranean cruise,Barcelona was our start/stop destination.I have to say that the Barcelona Aquarium was completely amazing, giant tanks with fresh (cichlids) and salt water fish and 100's of them! The big tanks had arched walkways that aloud sharks, eels stingray to swim right over you, many of the fish looked like they were actually watching us! food? This cruise is an absolute must see!We stopped at GREECE,TURKEY,ITALY,FRANCE,VATICAN,MONACO,SPAIN........The french Rivierra being my favorite followed closely by Santorini Island........Skip Athens Greece!Save all your shopping for Turkey, they make high quality knock off jewelry.....Rolex watches $20-$100 bucks. This is a must trip!!! Santorini views/pics are post card worthy on every shot and the same goes for the French Rivierra! After this trip you will definately have your fill of old buildings but they all have cool stories! Barcelona is full of pick pocket thieves so look out......my wife put her cell phone down on the table to eat at an outside dining lounge on Laramba street and a woman caring a full page note proceeded to cover her phone with this sheet that read por favor.........begging for money while the other hand was under the sheet grabbing the phone......this pick pocket thief met her match!!!!!!The very next night we witnessed this same girl trying it on another tourist where she was soon told to &*&&***&& off but she did have the phone in hand this time, these crookas work together and can disappear instantly!

  3. i'm new to plants in the tank......can someone recommend a hardy plant that is easy to grow without C02,timers and a bunch of maintenance or cost?Maybe something that my sa/ca cichlids will chew on. looking for something that is as tough as the dirty rotten weeds that grow in our garden every year!!
  4. i have a pleco in each of my tanks and one is pure black and the other is colored just like you described.....dark color with tan like striping and has been like that since i've gotten him.As far as the other problems I don't have a clue but i've noticed in the past that plecos will surface for a gasp of air,in fact i had one that would do that alot and at feeding time he would swim upside down for several minutes eating food from the surface (he was nuts!!!)Usually a sick fish will hide alot more.
  5. i think i erased a message you sent me.....i asked about those thoricthys elliot fish

  6. i'de like to start by saying i've never kept African cichlids. i have several diff. sa/ca cichlids and find them fairly easy to care for, i've read many times about keeping africans is a real challenge with their aggression.I read that keeping only males is easier.Even in the LFS stores they seem to be charging one another constantly and i've seen a few streaded up pretty bad.I think keeping up on maintenance is a full time job with my 100gal & 75gal so dealing with trying to keep the peace seems to me to be an extra pain in the @$$.I do agree that africans have a more colorful bunch to pick from but i would put my geophagus up against any african in the beauty department.Everyone in my tanks is peaceful.....severums like to push their weight around but never any injuries.
  7. totally agree!!! i think a 30gal is about right just for 2 full grown angels
  8. HOW MANY BUCKETS DO YOU HAVE?

I WOULD LIKE TO GET ONE BUT AM LEAVING ON A TRIP TO EUROPE AND WILL BE BACK MAY 20TH

  9. actually big als has compressed air to ad to the fish bag but they tolb me that it is not needed unless its goin to be more than 4hrs before they are put into your tank......i just didn't need it for the 1.5 hr. journey home,so my point was that i don't think the filter alone turning off would deplete oxygen over night low enough to kill the fish and there must be addition factors.
  10. i never had them add oxygen and i live 1.5 hrs from most fish stores
  11. i'm sure a tank holds alot more oxygen then a cup full of water in a bag how many times have you seen a fish bowl without a filter or air stone or a betta in a beer mug i would almost have to say that there could be a problem with the water parameters ....any rotting food or fish terds uses up alot of oxygen during decomposing
  12. you would think that there would be enough oxygen in the water over night to keep them alive, after all they can live in a bag from the LFS for 3-4 hrs
  13. it will be their first spawn so i think they maybe inexperienced, they,ve been twithching, fanning one another and circling almost continuously.I built a enclosed cave with an opening just big enough for them to fit inside and now the glass is showing on the bottom do to 1 fish cleaning all the sand out.The fish that has done the cleaning seems way more focussed then the other and the breeding tube is way more visible...............quite the show they putting on
  14. some times i've heard you can syphon the eggs out and put into another container (with same water) with a sponge filter.....depends on species i suppose. Many times, depending on species, the parents will guard them well. Also have read you are suppose to leave a night light near the tank so the parents can ward off any intruders 24hrs.Remove any plecos or very fast fish that will come in for the kill if you decide to let the parents raise them.
  15. they are courting one another with breeding tubes exposed and digging a pit in a rock cave i made, they are also becoming territorial toward other fish also i was wondering which sex of fish would be more likely to be doing most of the digging......i'm assuming the female would build the (nest) to her own liking
  16. aquarium salt works wonders in healing, gill health, injuries and some parasites cannot tolerate it.
  17. sometimes i find fried shrimp in a pan!!!!
  18. HEY MAYBE I'M ONTO SOMETHING!!! just read about a POND MASTER 4000, its good for up to 4000 gallon ponds and has a flush system to clear debri along with a uv sterilizer built in............maybe this is the way to go for 2-3-400 gallon tanks. They also offer smaller units but its never a bad thing to have overkill filteration. As far as noise ...i haven't a clue.It varys in price depending on which site your on 500-700 dollars. what do you think?
  19. If I were to go with canisters on a 300, I'd do at least 2 FX5s, then MODIFY them to increase filtering capacity. IMO, a sump would be the way to go. I've never noticed a smell in the sumps I've run, but if that's a problem, place a dish of baking soda in the cabinet and change it out when you do WCs. i was even lookin at a pond filter as an option?????
  20. so i have 2 chinese brand tanks aquagiant(100 gal) and a sun sun(75gal) ,both have built in filters in lid. so my question is.....how much better filtering could i expect with a cannister (eheim or fluval)? right now my tanks are crystal clear, fish are super healthy and water reads perfect.I also find it very handy that i can change filter media on each tank to what ever i want in a few minutes without a mess. thanks for your input!
  21. yes i meant treated chlorine water(prime) on that note i have to order 20 to get them but just don't have the room (only about 4)so i am looking for interested buyers (approx $9.00-$10.00 each)2-2.5"
  22. what is the easiest way to condition these fish to chlorinated water?
  23. i'll try spencer and thanks again
