  1. Well now. It's a Goby. Purple. And has spots...:smokey:
  2. That's interesting on your CPD. Mine do NOT predate their young. However, I did add a few very young dwarf rainbows and they ate all the fry! haha! I took them out about a month ago and the fry are starting to make a comeback in that tank.
  3. Pseudomugil furcatus I don't keep them, but if I am not mistaken, Gary Lange brought some eggs with him to both the Edmonton and Calgary spring workshops? possibly it was another species. I think they've been around town though at Riverfront and possibly Pisces. You could call and check with them if they have any. Check also with Rick of the Calgary Aquarium Society. (I think he's on this forum, someone else will have to tell you as who, because I don't recall). He's probably our biggest 'local' expert on the rainbows and other fish from that area of the world, like the furcatus. Overall I would anticipate that they are very similar to breeding other rainbows. Set up a species tank, or at least one that can't mix eggs, and put in a spawning mop. Good feed of live food, like bbs, white worms, etc. and collect eggs. hatch in a good amount of methylene blue *(there are other antifungals, that is just the one that I prefer). If I am not mistaken, I think the Pseudomugil's require some food at the microworm level for the first week or so. Vinegar eels, or other substitutes probably would work too. then get them on bbs and raise em up! Another option to live food is the line of Golden pearls that you can get from Harold (Fairdeal) locallly, or order online from Ken's foods. I honestly don't know how succesful you might be with that over live food, but as an fyi I tend to supplement most of my live food with Golden pearls just to make sure of a balanced diet potential. I think most fry will eat the live food first but most have readily taken the Golden pearls too. I tend to put in some golden pearls about 5-10 minutes before feeding live food. Just the way I do it, I'm sure there are better methods that others can describe They're a very pretty little fish, and I'm likely to try spawnning them some time in the future, just have too many other spawning projects going on right now! Dan
  4. it would push back in to the hot water heater I would think, as there is typically no check valve on a home water system. It's an interesting questions because what if you are are running a lot of RO and for some random reason NOT using the hot water system. Eventually it would overpressure and the hot water system psv would release till it depressures I think. As to drinking water, I suspect most people don't use the hot water for drinking, so it would only be used in that part of the system. I don't think you could overpressureand push back in to the cold water feed to your hot water tank before the psv on your hot water system releases? However, if you were using hot water for drinking, it's going to be very mineral concentrated while the system is running. These are just a laymans guess on this, a plumber could probably answer these questions a lot better. Just one comment on the 'waste' part of this. The waste involved is load on the water processing system of your city or town. The 'waste' water from RO units are not destroyed or changed. It's still water that is returned to the environment as water. It just adds load to the cities purification system. Edit:: forgot to add - personally I use a steam distillation unit. They're fairly pricey new, but the waste is greatly minimized. It auto flushes on a regular basis though or the tank would just fill up with minerals till it was completely caked. However, when not in use, the auto flush doesn't activate, so minimizes waste.
  5. grats on the simplex Anne Marie! We can soon do a hostage exchange of baby simplex for baby pictas! :smokey:
  6. Vince, are those fry then "muppies" or my fave "gollies" and do you get BAP points for both species?? Guppies will try to breed with anything but I've never heard of a guppy/molly hybrid. I've never heard of it either. Can they interbreed? That I didn't know.
  7. That's too bad. They are very pretty little fish. Hopefully you will have better success with them on the next spawn.
  8. Just read up on those fish. Typical spawn is 5-20, so I'd say you have an exception there, and a valid one. Sorry, should have read up on it before replying on that specific fish, but I have left my reply as is, because it applies nicely to a general range. Dan
  9. That would depend on the classifcation of the fish (the point class), and is subject to the discretiion of the BAP chairperson. If that is a mouthbrooding african cichlid, I think they are class A - 5 point fish. (I didn't look it up, just winging this, so correct me if I am wrong). If it is a Class C (15 pts) then they are considered more difficult to spawn and there is some lattitude. So, on a first blush guess I'd say no, you need to full 10 for the class A's. If there is some difficulty with the fish, or they normally have very small spawns (like for example the one sided livebearers are typically spawns of 5-15) then you could easily make a case for it. If that fish normally has a spawn of 100, then it would be reasonable to expect at least the 10 for the fulll cycle of 60 days. I am not the BAP chair, so just giving information from my understanding and my beliefs. Edit: looked up the fish in question. see my next response Dan
  10. 7 species per week? Wow. This is going to be an interesting run. I retract that. I shall continue to submit BAP forms. I'm only spawning specific groups that I have targettted for CAOAC certificates, so you should be able to beat me easily with cichlids and livebearers Jorg!
  11. I'd rather see a talk on Jorg's live food collection. now THAT would be damn interesting.
  12. Here's a link to it. http://www.calgaryaquariumsociety.com/pdf/bap.pdf I won't be submitting any more BAP forms, so It will be just you and FCG! good luck!
  13. Have you tried culturing compost worms? Fairly easy, doesn't smell ( at least my wife has never mentioned them ), and can be very productive. I was given a culture of compost worms last fall, but they were banned from the house... I keep my white worms hidden in the corner of my fish room...
  14. Yup. I did indeed mean Total dissolved solids. I have 6 or so Amano, 3 females and 3 males, and my females are typically carrying eggs too. It would be an interesting project to see if they could be actively spawned wihout the processes that have been recommended in the past. I note that you are living outside of Calgary, and possibly you are on well water? Do you know just generally if your water is very 'hard' or softer than say Calgary city water? Do you have a water conditioning system on your water supply to your taps? I would guess that Ubroke has hit the nail on the head. You got the 1 in a million that survived. now if you could get 2, maybe they could start breeding in fresh water with their mutant ways! haha! Thanks again for posting this. I find it very interesting. Dan
  15. not all species of fish maybe? And even within a species maybe not all the fish survive? and maybe it freezes for longer than they can recover? Just guessing though. I really don't know for certain. I have however experienced what Jorg described of fish recovering after being out on the ice all day. Maybe they don't recover completely though. Maybe they are 'alive' but would die shortly thereafer? Still just guessing.
  16. For a good glass cutter, and running pliers, - any stores that sell stained glass supplies and tools. Google stained glass shop, Calgary - there are several in the downtown core. Interestingly, most glass shops use really cheap glass cutters, which they dip in a sponge soaked in 3 in 1 oil before making a cut. You should have glass pliers though. I think you saw them when you were over here once when I was cutting some lids? For glass, especially this time of year, you should be able to get scraps for free from any glass shop. I was at one in the spring that wanted $40 for a huge pile of cut off pieces. I bet they'd let you take it for free now, just so they don't fill up their garbage bin! Right now, they likely have a lot of residential jobs, thus a lot of cut off pieces piling up.
  17. In Calgary, Burnco for slate pieces. Cheap and you can make some really interesting rock structures in your tank. Just be sure it is on the tank glass, and not resting on the gravel as some fish will dig underneath and distrupt it, possibly even leading to a tank break! I like the coconut shell idea too. I might start buying coconuts! haha!
  18. That is very interesting. What is the TDS of your water Naturenut? Do you have the ability to measure it? Also, do you add salt to your shrimp tank?
  19. Was that ice fishing Jorg? If so, I was thinking pretty much the same thing. I'm with you though, I very much doubt they would 'come back to life' after any period much longer than that, but that would be a pure guess on my part. definetely not 2 weeks!.
  20. If I had a big female australian lungfish, you could surely borrow her from me. But I don't.
  21. Find out if Harold is at home that day (Fairdeal). If so, ask him if you can stop by for a visit.
  22. Praecox eggs are clear. I have no idea what color gertrudae eggs are though. If they are viable eggs you should know soon enough, if they hatch. Do a google on the gertrudae, there should be information if the eggs are yellow. Failing that being available, seperate the gertrudae in to their own tank and see if they continue to lay yellow eggs? Grats on them spawning if they are!
  23. I'm just funnin' with you Vince. It's all good.
  24. That is amazing Jorg. I have live food envy! haha! I need to give that a try. Comparing to say frozen bloodworms, at about $15 per package similar to the size of those..... that is a LOT of money saved for really good fish food. Thanks for posting.
  25. hey. He posted a for sale in the CAS section. Fair game I say! haha! -roll-
