  1. LOL i didnt even see that...... you guys with your latin names i just googled it LOL.......
  2. I feel that pain.... Ive got 2 PVC overflows on a 180 gallon and same deal last week..... Water running down the back of it where i couldnt see... just hear and it sounded alot like an overflow LOL...... Checked the T where the water flows and a pleco pops its head out and scares the crap outa me....... Got him out and flow resumed to normal...... Next morning Screen pipes were built
  3. there was 2 left on thursday.... may still be there
  4. Well i dont suggest you gut load the poor lil guy just yet lol...... 5" a month isnt healthy for arapima nevermind the smaller gars...... But you do what you gotta do..... seeing as they are aqua stock getting it to eat anything is important just to build up immunities..... but that being said a good meal then fast em till he will take slivers of beefheart or prawns would be your best choice.... that or krill the frozen kind not dried out has worked wonders for me in the past. Keep the temp around 82-84 aswell.... it will get them digesting same night
  5. I have a 180 with Ample lights and a few big pieces of driftwood that are starting to grow alge, And have some kind of plant growing in a crack in the wood? looks like maybe an anubeus???? I dont know plants at all..... I would love to try and get some bigger live plants growing in there off of the driftwood but i have No Clue where to start???? I have clowns and a bristlenose in there now and will be using it as a grow out for silver dollars and gars.... So they may have to put up with a bit of a crap kicking...... Any ideas or info in the right direction would Help greatly
  6. Dont get me wrong...... Ive bought gars fed on minnows and goldfish that were just fine...... Ive also bought wild caught that had actual 1/4" fish lice on them I had to pick off with tweezers....... They are a keystone species...... they can endure alot more than your average fish..... but it all comes down to how much they eat and water quality..... They could live in ich infested water with zero oxygen if they were eating pinky mice daily...... but thats neither here nor there lol..... If they arent eating anything but bloodworms i would start with strands of TINY pieces of tiger prawns and beefheart...... get them on that and you will have a fish that will outlive you
  7. Get em off the bloodworms asap....... Bloodworms always cause me headaches in getting fish off them and High ammo cycles...... not too mention they hold little actual food in them...... more of a treat
  8. A sumps square footage of bio area will always be superior to any canister or HOB filter......I have 4 AC500's running 2 180 gallons with backup fluval 404's and I would take a sump anyday...... 1 pump as apposed to 3 and you have 4-6 times the bio media not to mention how much more easy they are to clean...... My 2 bits anyways
  9. Im looking for anything bigger than say 6"..... My grow out tank...... one of the 180's i picked up this weekend has 6" clown loaches too small for my rays in the 300.... The other 180 adopted my redtail cat and giant gourami so there is just no way i can make use of $50 food sticks lol Jlake..... My big female motoro can fit a 6" clown loach as fat as a golf ball alomost into her mouth...... and tried and tried again till i took them out..... If it fits in the mouth its fair game to any predator fish
  10. They are the SMALLEST gars i have ever seen...... lol I believe the 2 left are either longnose or spotted that will grow into thier beak :)I didnt see the scales too well but if your has a sharp diamond or triangle shape odds are they are longnoses and More rare... Very long narrow head for a spotted/florida but i never seen one so small. I didnt buy any as even my clown loaches in the new 180 would eat them Back to the want adds for me
  11. LOL...... I dont suggest eating too many carrots.......If your looking for an orange tan the spray works very well.... Oompa Loompa's everywhere will voutch As far as food coloring..... I would just spray paint it..... they have been doing it for years overseas I hear DuPont makes the blood reds and you can find that shade at canadian tire My cross back is tremclad gold dust..... with rust Inhibitor Thats my 2 Bits......
  12. Awesome shots bro and amazing fish...... Huge fins on the red eh
  13. Tiny little guys eh.... Well Im on it thanks for the heads up
  14. I have always kept plecos in all my tanks since i was a kid. They have always been common (sometimes sailfins or that big blue eyed bugger i had for almost 8 years) and grew to 10-14" and did there job of cleaning..... I never really got into the fancy plecos as most of my fish would eat anything smaller than 4" but now that i have an all black tank I cant even see them so now Im thinking its time I get into them lol. I am looking for a breed thats fairly durable that gets at least 6-8" and colorful in one way or another..... Ive tried the bristlenose.... but it dissapeared and Ive had an albino but it seemed weak didnt eat and passed on. I feed alge wafers and sometimes veggies on the clip so i dont know.... What do you guys suggest I start looking for? It would be living with rays and arowana..... Any advice is good advice as i am Lost on this topic and have zero research other than what the kids at the pet store recomend...... and a 2" zebra would be a snack in 20 seconds......
  15. Well thats good to hear The FF is one fish I can just never get away with...... Every time i get one either someone eats it or they just dissapear. They are Impossible to find over 8" And it looks like you may have the Semaprochilodus taeniurus, Hes gonna get Huge..... All the ones ive seen here are insignis maxing out at around 8-10" Very cool
  16. I didnt even know what that was...you should have said fei feng or phoenix lol Awesome work bro, where did you pick him up? How are the tin foil barbs doing?
  17. Best to check your water for ammonia just in case.... and if thats fine try a powerhead on one side and he will find the current by a plant that works best for him and chill there
  18. well i have had a bunch of the florida's spotteds short bodied ect when they were readily available from calgary but the market has seemed to dry up with them and are very rare now lol. I would get him off the feeders (i just dont trust them) and start feeding small chunks of beefheart or if you can con him into the large carnivore pellets from tetra (about 1" by 1/4") Ive always had good luck with those. Also do you have current up top? I know they like a little horizontal current to paddle in. Other than that you may just have a lazy gar lol but Ive only had them sit for long periods when my water was off or the tank was too bright/no where they would feel comfortable?
  19. Sometimes a good shake while running does the trick either a bubble or air. If its the ceramic post roll it on a flat surface, Ive had them ware down and warp. Big als sells parts
  20. hustler

    New Rack

Ive seen similar used in a wholesale fish market but the tanks were at most 75 gallon long..... I myself would not trust a 180 or even a 110 on a hollow channel beam of any kind without a wall thickness of 1/8-3/16" If you are going that big i would say befriend a welder and make it out of 1 1/2 or 2" square tubing or a real good carpenter and Big Bolts....
  21. I would love to hear more about the 600g homemade? Dimentions? build pics? Love the pics bro and the crystal head, and the alien
  22. gars shouldnt get lazy, atleast none that ive kept and i fed all mine pretty heavy. What are you feeding them? whats the temp like and does it have alot of room to swim? I found a plant or two and driftwood with a large open area at the top worked best and they would generally stay up top hovering by a plant. I miss keeping gars
  23. Agreed Did you get the arapima? Ive seen them in a calgary LFS from time to time....... but they werent under 100 bux lol..... I know there is a guy in rocky mountian house has one about 4 feet long in a plastic tub i think its 8 feet round maybe 10??? feeds it frozen rats and such I would love to visit such a monster..... but if i had the setup I think i would be keeping alot more than 1 6 foot killer in there anything else would be a snack
