The dollar store at Brentwood Village sometimes has little boxes of turbo (?) shells. L'epicerie downtown carries escargot shells, but it was about $20 for a bag of 12. And they were very thin shells. I honestly don't see them holding up for actual cooking... Good luck =) It took me forever to get a good number of shells for my tank.

How To Change Topic Subject In Buy/sell Forum?

Awesome! Thanks! -
I have the 300 watt one for my 75 gallon tank. It keeps the temperature more reliably than the two submersible heaters I had been running in there. One word of caution though - I got mine from Big Al's in Calgary, and the first one I got had a leak. Took it back to the store and exchanged it the next day and it's been running fine for about 6 months now.

Hi Jason - which dollar store did you find all these shells? None of the dollar stores I've tried have had any =( (Thanks Vince, will try the Blue Seafood again. I'm pretty sure I called them a few months ago and they didn't have any)
-
OMG Vince, which seafood store?? I called several last year when I was desperately trying to find shells and they all sounded as if they thought if I was crazy! I even called restaurant supply stores... I've also found big bags of assorted shells at Walmart (in the candle section). Many aren't usable, but there were enough "turbo" type shells that I bought a bag (in desperation). Probably turned out to be less than $1/shell.

I just bought a box of 20 turbo shells for $9 at Pier One yesterday. They appear to be polished and smooth (hopefully not painted or varnished, I will check before putting them in the tank. They're actually $18 I think but there was an incorrect price tag someone had stuck on the bottom of the box so the cashier let me buy them for the lower price. I emailed cichlidbreeding.com back around Christmas asking about shells & shipping to Canada, but got no response. I concluded that they must not want my Canadian money =) Anways, good luck!

The spixis I got from Dan have eaten holes in my onion plants, but haven't (so far!) touched the swords, crypts, java fern or anubias. I still have hydra though... Update: have been hydra-free for about a week now =) Guess they just needed some time to get settled! (BTW Thanks for the great snails Dan!)

Thanks so much! I visited Gold's, Imperial, Tanks-a-lot, Franco's and Big Al's today. (It was an awesome day =) I was especially impressed with the racking system at Gold's. They had some gigantic tanks way up really high. I couldn't see in them, but it was still impressive...

Apologies if this is an inappropriate topic... I tried to do a search, but "aquariums Calgary" and "Calgary fish store" didn't return any useful threads =) I couldn't tell if discussing LFS was "not done" here. Sorry! I'm wondering which aquariums/fish stores/LFS you all frequent in Calgary? I've been to Big Al's and Riverfront. Also Ocean City and Wai's Aquarium (these two were salt-water only). Thanks in advance!

Yes, I am in Calgary. Thanks for the info re: auction, I thought I had to be a member =) Ron, curious why you don't have spixi in your planted tanks? I have some plants (anubias nana, java fern, onion plant, random crypts & swords) - do they eat plants? Sort of off-topic, but do you guys think spixi will be big enough that assassin snails won't eat (all of) them? Thanks again =)
-
Thanks Dan! Yes, I did see a thread you wrote about spixi mowing down your hydra. There were pictures of a flower pot. I was very impressed =) I'll read up about the Calgary auction (Calgary Aquarium Society?) Have been thinking of getting a membership but never got around to it! I assume you're now breeding them, but where did you get your first spixi snails?

Hello! I noticed hydra this week in a 75 gallon Neolamprologous multifasciatus tank. I'm thinking they may be the reason I don't have any baby multis (they've been in this tank since January). That, or Sheldon doesn't know how to make babies with his ladies... So- to get rid of them, the information I've been reading on the internet is that the following will probably eat the hydra: Blue gourami (blue, gold, three-spot, etc) Spixi apple snails (Asolene spixi) Assassin snails (Clea helena) Has anyone here had experience with eradicating hydra? I'd love to hear your thoughts! This a: 75 gallon tank, 7 N. multifasciatus, 4 otocinclus, 4-7 assassin snails Also currently 3 gold gourami (added yesterday) that will probably be going back to Big Al's tomorrow as they're eating all the food before the multis can get to it... Thanks in advance!

Is Anyone Breeding Celestial Pearl Danios (Galaxy Rasboras) In Alberta?
aonyx replied to Sierra's topic in Breeding Forum
Hello- I'm not sure if you're looking to buy them from a store or...(am new here, sorry!) I saw a tank of them (labelled "galaxy rasboras") at Big Al's in Calgary. Maybe the Big Al's in Edmonton will have some as well? I would think they get basically the same stock? They were $5.99/fish and ridiculously cute Edit: Yeah, sorry, this is the "Breeding" forum =) Please ignore the newb =)
