  1. If they get caught, they can't reproduce. Problem solved. Also, personally, I don't breed shrimp for intelligence. It's a shrimp, not a dog.
  2. They can kill them. I've witnessed it myself. This isn't my video but my assassin snail killed 1 of my cherry shrimp. It was twitching and alive..not after he got through with it though. It is possible but not very common.
  3. Aw man, my aquarium looks like crap next to those, even the last place picture! Many of the pics don't even look like it's underwater, totally awesome!
  4. Thanks for the responses:). It makes sense that they would break down in the water, maybe I am just being overly cautious. I guess it's not like I'm pouring straight medication down the drain(like they tell you not to do). I think I'll just dump it down the toilet again. Well, off to do a water change
  5. I have only used meds a couple of times in 16 years so I know it's a weird question......but what is the best way to dispose of medicated tank water? The medication is API General Cure. It contains metronadisole and praziquantil. Last round my spouse just flushed it down the toilet which I was going to do again because I thought it would be bad for my garden plants to put it there. Maybe I could put it on my grass? I just want to dispose of it in the least environmentally damaging way, whatever that may be. Thanks in advance:)
  6. You're welcome and good luck!
  7. Hmm, well maybe these were not the same thing then but they were small blue and albino lobsters. Aquarium Central in Edmonton sells them. I think I also saw them at BigAl's. They didn't call them cherax destructors though so I don't know if it's the same thing. If it's not, you could always call AC, they will bring in specialty stuff for the customers.
  8. My Vampire shrimp are just over 2", I hope I can raise them properly and get them huge. I just love big inverts, I would love a cherax destructor. Yeah, they would be awesome..to bad they would kill off everything in my tank lol. I saw them and the albino version at my LFS. Very kewl.
  9. How big are yours now? I've found conflicting information on them, some say they max out at 4" and other sources say 6". Personally I say the bigger the better but at 6" it's fans might catch baby PFRs so I'll need to move them. Ron Mine are still small. They are both about 3 inches at the moment but I hope they get HUGE! I think the conflicting info is because most people can't keep them alive for them to reach maturity, also, they may have females only. If they are anything like Bamboo shrimp, the males get larger. My one bamboo male is about 4 inches! It probably also depends on if they get the proper nutrients. If they don't it could stunt their growth like what happens with fish.
  10. Thanks for the reply anyways. SkyGrl has a Bamboo shrimp in her RCS tank and he looked like such a brute in there; I was thinking a Vampire shrimp would look like Gozilla trampling a village, LOL. If I can't find one around, I could ask my wholesaler to bring them in but I may have to take 4 or 5. Ron They're really neat shrimp! I have 2 of them and they hang out in the current with my Bamboo shrimp. They have a nice blue tint to them and remind me of Popeye with the big biceps lol. I'm in Edmonton, so I can't recommend a place in Calgary to find them. But if you're ever in Edmonton, Aquarium Central is where I got mine from:)
  11. +1. Personally, seeing how big discus get, I wouldn't put any in that size tank. They would be much better in a large tank. This is a good excuse to upgrade to a big tank
  12. Ok, great, thanks for the tips:)
  13. I just re-read the responses and realized you guys are suggesting 2 filters. She won't go for that...so I need to know what filter will be good on it's own for a 50 gallon. Thanks again:)
  14. We're buying my sister a fish tank for her birthday. We've decided on something around 50 gallons. What would be a good quality canister or HOB filter for a tank of that size. I'm only familiar with the Fx5 and AquaClear personally as those are the only ones I've owned. I want her to have something that's easy to clean and use and that can be stuffed with a lot of bio-media. Thanks guys/gals
  15. I don't use carbon but I'm trying to gather info for someone else. The person didn't rinse the carbon insert before putting it into his fish tank and then his fish started gasping for air at the surface. He already has an existing filter and he just set up a secondary one where he added the new, un-rinsed carbon. Can this cause any sort of negative side effect? I tried googling for info but can't find anything. I had heard years ago that you have to rinse the carbon inserts thoroughly because the fine carbon particles can remove oxygen from the water. Is this true of just another one of those fish keeping myths? Or, can the particles harm the fish if they ingest them? Thanks in advance!
  16. I prefer to under feed my fish, not so they're thin and starving but I'm not interested in fattening them up so to speak. They get flake in the morning and they nibble from the catfish wafer in the evening. I also skip a feeding every few days. This feeding regiment (for me) produces the healthiest fish. Thanks for the advice but I didn't want to switch to the pellet unless I had to. I just wanted to make sure the NLS was doing what it was supposed to do(supplying the fish I have with the proper nutrients) My biggest fish are my 2 pearl gourami(about 4 inches give or take), everything else is smaller. Thanks for the responses:)
  17. Ok thanks, I was hoping I didn't have to switch to the pellet. I'm so used to feeding flakes so I think I'll just stick with them as none of my fish are larger than 5 inches. Thanks for the input guys:)
  18. Oh okay, my fish devour everything in less than a minute but the article I read talked about the nutrient loss in the flakes before it even got into the water. It said that once you open the lid, the flakes start losing valuable nutrients because of oxygen exposure. Any thoughts on that?
  19. Ok, thanks jvision, I'll cut back on the wafer a bit. I personally thought that I was under feeding with this new food because I have so many fish in my 140g(100, give or take a couple). The size of the wafer I bought is smaller than a dime(not sure if they come in different sizes) So do you or anyone else have an opinion on the flakes losing potency from O2 exposure?
  20. Hey guys/gals, I have a couple more questions/ concerns about the NLS food, any help appreciated! H2O Stable Wafers- my catfish are taking forever to eat them. I put 3 wafers in(as suggested by LFS and I have 12 corydoras) and parts of the wafer is still there the next day. They are browsing like crazy on it, so are the other fish and shrimp but what's up with that? In the past I give them 4 Tetramin sinking tablets which they gobble up in about 1-2 hours. Is this normal or is it too much food I'm giving? I took the bits out because I don't want to pollute the water. I know these take time to break down but this is ridiculous! H2O Flakes- I read an article about flake food not being that good because it gets exposed to oxygen and by the time the fish eats it, much of the nutrients are dead. Is this true? I was reading the NLS container and it says that flakes are not suitable for larger fish and that they should be fed the pellets exclusively. Why do they say that? And also, what size are they referring to as "larger fish"? Helps meeeee Thank you
  21. I had to hold back on buying them myself lol...yeah, they are really delicate! If you get some, keep us posted on how you do with them. I bought some Pearl and Vampire shrimp recently and should probably chill out with the shrimp buying for a bit....but it's so tempting to get more!
  22. Different species of Corydora will "shoal" together, corydora of the same species will "school" together. Apparently there's a difference lol. All in all, they will become friends:)
  23. Breeding for sale(when available) Cherry Shrimp Yellow Sakura Shrimp Crystal Red Shrimp (s- grade) Wild Neocaridina Heteropoda-Blue and Tiger These are breeding but I'm not harvesting the eggs/fry at this time: Emperor Tetra Sunset High FIn Platy Green Corydora Bronze and Albino Corydora Honey Gourami My Ember Tetras and White Cloud females are fat all the time but I've yet to "see" eggs.
  24. I have the Watts zero waste RO system from Costo. It works by putting the "waste" back into the hot water line under the sink. Works great. Oh really? That sounds great! Looking into that one as well, thanks:)
