  1. I still have my Bleheri. They are the most interesting fish I've ever owned. I wish I could get something more exotic. (I should have jumped at the blue ones a few years ago when I started keeping them) Nice to see that the people that still keep them are taking good care of them. Edit* When I inquired about the laws of keeping them after the ban I was told I could surrender them to a school or to another community member if I no longer wanted them but there was no mention by F&W about having them destroyed. The laws seemed to have taken on a similar policy to the one in place for Red Eared Sliders. You can have them but you can't flush, import, buy or sell them. Go figure.
  2. If you'd like to come play with my hammerhead magnet and compare it to a magfloat you are more than welcome to swing by! I have a 7ft tank and half inch glass. This thing was worth every cent.
  3. I only found one magnet cleaner that works for thick glass. I haven't had to razorblade my reef tank in 6 months+ http://www.algaefree.com/site/products.html
  4. Just use a kittylitter scoop Don't worry about the bugs they'll take care of themselves. If you really want to kill all the live stuff quickly add a pot of boiling water in the tank slowly.
  5. Blue world is no more. If you make the trip to Edmonton Red Coral Edmonton is awesome!
  6. You should see the little dots in person (AWWWESSSSSS) they have the same spots as mommy and daddy. The other three Bolivians are doing amazing! they turned all sorts of bright colours when I introduced them to my existing fish. my big male paired up with the lonely girl in something like 20 minutes. Amazing fishes.
  7. Two years. Two years of hard work on my biotope obliterated in an hour. I went to go feed my fish this afternoon and The tank looked empty! "Fisshiiiieeez! Where arrreee yooooouuuuu!" I peered around the tank, I noticed one very sick maculata stuck to my filter intake. I went to go fetch the vodka for a proper send off. "where are the rest of my fishes?" Soon enough; I found my answer A ball of them were huddled in the bottom corner of my tank. Quickly I ran to get my water change equiptment. Chemical balance: Normal. Temprature: normal. Then the real carnage became apparent. Little fish filled my syphon like they were being raptured. My newest halfmoon betta had just come out of a month quarantine I had seen him this morning hiding in the subwassertang his lifeless body drifted slowly around the bottom of the tank. I don't know what happened and I don't know why. I think my fish aren't the only ones needing my belvadere. The tank was a 10 gallon with 2 aqua clear 20's running on it. The Mr. Aqua 12 long sprung a leak in the silicone last month and had been drained and moved to the repair room. Alas poor borg, I new thee well.
  8. What I often do for my small tanks 2-10 gallons is keep a milk jug full of primed water left over from the premixed water for changes in my big tanks. I've never had an issue with prime in my tanks but do tend to agree that the fancier bettas seem more sensitive, I've had 2 halfmoons die unexpected within a week of getting them home I've not yet lost a crowntail even though some of them are well over 3 years old.Maybe you are on to something? perhaps there's not enough established bacteria in your smaller tanks? I don't know if that's an issue with betta's but I know I've lost more sensitive species due to that. A prime overdose causes oxegen dificiancy, you will notice your fish (not sure about labryninth fish) gasping at the surface for air? Do you have a larger tank? Sometimes when I'm feeling lazy I'll pull a gallon out of my 120 and use it to change the water on my small tanks.
  9. I've seen his fish and bought many but some of the very special stuff is only found on Aquabid.
  10. So I've had/have a few high end fish, My newest guy a beautiful White halfmoon didn't make it through quarantine, It got me thinking, I've been totally bitten by the bug, I currently own 4 betta fish, a copper halfmoon, a sky blue/multitone crowntail and two black devil crowntails. Big Al's want's up to 80.00 EACH for okay halfmoons, another local store has beautiful fish for about half that much but limited selection. I've noticed a few on Aquabid that i'd like to take home with me. My questions. Who're the best sellers to deal with? How EXACTLY does shipping work, Most instructions are written by ESL speakers. How much APROX does it cost? What am I looking for in the highest quality fish? What is the DOA rate on these fishes? I've been breeding live food for awhile and would like to try breeding them again, it's no use breeding muttley fishes. Housing. I have a couple betta's in Fluval Spec 2's My mr. Aqua 12 gallon long was recently taken down due to a leak in the silicone, When I repair it how much room should I allocate to each betta? I was thinking 6 fish to a 12 long?
  11. Put it in the water and add light! Naja likes low flow and does well for me in my shrimp tanks
  12. I bought 2 of the 3 for 8.00 each. One for myself and one for my friend. I love the little goober, I think with auction fever there will be a demand. Me? I REALLY want some triops...
  13. I couldn't be happier with my micro setup. The 12 long above^ I think I've got photos of them happy with my shrimps. http://albertaaquatica.com/index.php?showtopic=38488#entry2271234
  14. My first betta "mr.fish" lived for 5 years. He survived falling off a 6foot shelf if you can believe it. The cat was a bit over zelous that day. My current crowntail Puglsy was full grown when I got him and I've had him for a year. I keep him in a blackwater planted aquarium and he does really well. I am really starting to believe blackwater is a miracle drug for fish. I haven't had one fish get sick since I started keeping them in blackwater. Except when my filter died on my honeymoon, but lets not talk about that. My mother in law however has 10 veil tail betta fish. They average about 6 months in her care. So it's mostly how you keep them with a little luck thrown in! Take a guess! Like Wingin' it said when the fish get old you can really tell. They slow right down and look just a little different.
  15. My oldest hermit is about 5. he's a blue leg the size of a toonie. if crabs only lived a year how would you explain the monster sized ones? My snails don't seem to last however...I think the crab gets them eventually.
  16. How did the experiment go? I have live copepods for my marine inhabitants, I had no idea you could buy them dried, My salties just love them! They're small enough for fish fry? Yes I know this thread is old.
  17. As far as I can tell, the API salt is just reef salt in a smaller container! good luck with your fishy friend!
  18. Oh okay I looked but couldn't find the menu *ashamed because I build websites for a living and can't navigate a menu* THANKS! I'll get right on the crazy glue!
  19. I just realized my profile says I am a boy! it won't let me change that! Can a mod please change it to say I'm female. While your at it perhaps you can blank my how did you hear about AA answer from the record. This is why you don't join forums in the middle of the night! ~Aysha Married to Blink and lacking the necessary equipment to be a boy.
  20. *figured I should be more specific* Got that.My microworm starter kit is in the mail. I used to breed Fruit flies, sprigtails, daphnia constantly and the process is similar. My question is can I use repsashy superfly culture mix for my microworms? http://lllreptile.co...fly-media-24lb/
  21. Hahaha smartie pants! I guess I'll figure it out! He sure hates her in the glass cup!!!
  22. Practice makes perfect I guess. I have my own little setup ready to go! How long will my fish make googly eyes at each other before my male builds his nest? I've heard varying accounts.
  23. I am looking at getting into breeding higher end crowntail bettas. I've got a blackwater setup created with 5 gallon breeding tanks and mason jars I will be creating a betta barracks with 12 gallon long mr.aqua's in the future. I have a few nice crowntails for a practice run but I am looking at getting into bronze, platinums and black orchids in the future. The cost is not an issue it can't be any worse than my reef setup I currently breed fire red cherry shrimps and am looking at breeding my collection micro-rasbora in the future as well. My question is, Aside from Aquabid is there anyone Edmonton/Calgary that specializes in these high end bettas? I have a contact in Thailand who is willing to ship me some top grade fish but I'd like to see if anyone local has any first. Crown-tails are a priority but may consider other varietys. I am not looking to make a profit. I just enjoy fish keeping and would like to try breeding bettas to support my hobby before moving on to more difficult species. Another question to betta breeders (fishclubgirl and others) What do you do with your retired bettas? I've learned that bettas no longer breed after 14-16 months. Do you find them pet homes or keep them? Where are the best resources for advanced betta keepers? Here are some examples of fishes I am looking for: http://pinterest.com...pretty-fishies/ If anyone is selling any let me know. I'd be willing to pay cash or credit from my design company.
  24. it's pretty quiet but the way I have the filter set up it does move the water around enough for my small fish. I may add a powerhead in the future or hide a sponge filter. With the fish and plants I've got in it the AC30 seems to do the job. AC can import the mr.aqua for you. It's marked up accordingly (If I tell you what they cost in San Diego you'll be mad) but they can do it for less then the cost of a Fluval edge.
  25. So, After my filter on my ebi went sideways I decided to start again! My husband bought a Mr.Aqua 12 gallon long in San Diego It lasted in our house about 3 minutes before I jacked it for my new project. I aquascaped this tank using only bits and pieces lying around the house. I multipurposed it by moving all of my husbands (blink) cherry shrimp out of his 30 gallon when he changed into the Solana. I decided to go with a soft semi blackwater biotope to make my little fishies happy. Equipment: 3 bags of black sand substrate 8 peices of random driftwood 1 piece of mopani aquaclear 30 12 gallon long random heater. 2 large blue LED strips I had left over from a previous project Desk lamp. My goal with lighting is to drill 3 spotlights underneath the counter where it's housed. My goal for filtration is to drill a hole in the counter and run all the electrical and my canister filter down into under the counter. This isn't a journal because I have already finished my project except for those 2 things. Stock list: 15 red microraspbora boraras maculatus 6 microrasbora kubotai (neon green/yellow rasboras) 3 Garra flavatra (Panda Garra) 70 Neocaridina heteropoda (Cherry shrimp) 2 Caridina multidentata (Amano shrimps) 1.1 Betta Splendens crowntail random crypt and sword plants and some subwassertang that mysteriously appeared one day. The Bettas do not eat the shrimp. Here is a link to the flickr to keep me from adding 2 gazillion photos Thoughts,Suggestions, extra microrasboras welcome.
