  1. It was mentioned to check your NitrItes (NO2) not your NitrAtes (NO3), they are related but it's the NO2 that is very dangerous at low lvls and will kill fish.
  2. Nope, All the Petlands this side of BC are owned by a dude in Manitoba and the PJ's are own by two dudes in Toronto who's names happen to be Peter and John.
  3. Thanks for the welcome! There is a great article at http://www.loaches.com/articles/hillstream...n-the-fast-lane that shows how to create one-way flow without drilling holes in the tank. If you want to share more ideas we should probably move to the appropriate forum but I have some great, inexpensive ideas to make the thing rock! Deborah I really like that site and the filter idea, though I can't use it, I think it really rocks. My river tank idea is a display tank and I have to have all equipment out of the tank, including the heater. I'm also a glass worker so drilling holes in glass is second nature to me. I too have what I think (lol) are some good ideas and agree that we should move to the proper place and hopefully others will join in on the info action.
  4. I'm an Eheim person as well and I love the Classic models, but when I buy new Eheim cannisters I buy Proffessional models because of their easy accessibility for cleaning and changing the fine filter material. It is so easy to crack open a Proffessional and change the filter floss and get the filter up and running again; litterally, it only takes 60 seconds to complete the task and the filter doesn't need to be reprimed or anything.
  5. Hello Deborah and welcome. I too want to do a fast flowing river tank, but for zebra plecos. I want to drill two holes on both side panels of the tank and hook up two eheim canisters to bulkheads. The water current will flow from one side of the tank to the other side, but the current will travel directly along the bottom as well as across the surface. The bottom substrate will be sand and full of large (softball sized) natural river rocks, so the plecos can build their caves. Will

    Hello

What I mean is just about every species, not sub-species, lets not get carried away. I keep irridescent, columbian, bala, silver-tipped Nope, I meant species when I say there are 10,000 of them. For eg. you are keeping four species, three are catfish all of a different genus and one is a carp, closely related to goldfish. What you probably mean is Group or Order which is probable. Thanks tips, you don't have to criticize it was just a statement. Last time I checked I don't have a degree in marine biology, so maybe next time I should say I've kept 983 species then if that suits your likings. Sorry dude, I didn't mean to come across as critical and I sure didn't want to rub you the wrong way. I was just kinda shocked  at your statement and really I still am. I've kept a lot of different species of fish in my time, but no where near as many as your 1000ish! You've kept about 10% of the worlds species of FW fish and I've only kept less then 1%. It's really pretty wild when I look at it that way! Anyway, like I said ealier, weclome to AA. :smokey:

  8. I wondering if anyone has information on or can point me in the direction of information in regard to properly identifing my African Lungfish. I cannot figure out if it is a P. a. annectens, P. dolli, or a P. a. aethiopicus. I was hoping it is a P. a. aethiopicus. There is a picture of it im my piture folder when she was about 25cm, but I don't have an updated one of it right now.

    Hello

Welcome to the AA, Ritchie and dude you have had one heck of a lot of fish if you've tried your had at just about every species. Last I heard there are over 10,000 different species of freshwater fish. What kind of catfish are you keeping?
  10. I don't know, but wouldn't it be fun running the largest fishroom in western Canada? And thanks for the welcome back, JORG
  11. Highly unlikely...points from one defunct franchise are not likely to be honoured by a different franchisee. Brian and Nancy own the Edmonton Big Al's already...they are, I daresay, already fish people. The big als reward cards are not franchies specific, but corporate cards and can be used at any and all locations. this is a totally bogus comment on my part and I cant figure out how to remove it.

    Hello

Hello Everyone. Though I'm not new to AA, I am back after a much needed long vacation. I'm working on a few projects, one involves trying to grow up a happy and active Tetraodon mbu and the other is building 3- 16'L x4'W x2'H tanks out of wood and glass that will stacked ontop of each other in my fish room. So some of you may see me a lot in the DIY section, with pics, questions and soliciting opinions. Also, for those that are interested or unaware, a new Big Als Aquarium Services is being built in Calgary as we speak. It's very big and is a SuperStore class. So anyone who still has big al award points from the other location will be able to use them in the new location. Lets hope the owners are fish people this time! Also' Aquatic Imports is for sale and if it doesn't sell by Dec. 31 2007, the doors close forever, so everyone pool their money and lets buy it!
  14. You're welcome and WELCOME! Thanks for letting me know. Do you sell fish? Or just dog/cat/bird kinda stuff? Might have to take a trip up there on the weekend! Sorry for missing this, I sell mostly Dog and Cat stuff, and very little in the way of Fish stuff.
  15. Holy Ray! Are they P. henlei, I saw one about a year ago at riverfront for about $5000! So I went to Aquatics and asked if they could get them and was told no, but when they were available they were under a $1000? What's the deal with the partial glass bottom? Someone mentioned it to me the other day, and I figured it was for feeding purposes. Will
  16. Who knows? Maybe there's to much warfare and not enough passion or maybe, just maybe to much passion and not enough warfare. Well, either way I think it has to do with passion and warfare. Maybe look into the ultra zone! (:
  17. In order to find out. In order to find out what?
  18. Gene, Rodgers growing up best friend's father expressed wanting the positon three weeks ago. I'm seeing both of them tomorrow as I'm picking up fish from both. I'll let Rodger know then. No, you would be driving the company van. A big Dodge Sprinter, in fact. And a lemon at that.

    hello

Hello Butterfly, Welcome to the community.
  20. Not that any remembers my initial question :P but I asked about the water changes just because this tank's at work I thought if I can get away without them then I will. john- All though I have responed poorly to the aversion toward my recommending to You a read, and yes I did loose focus to Your initial question, my first post had no ill intention, and I gave my opinion on the subject, but also followed through with a source of information that contradicted my opinion. Anyways john, I just wanted to help. Will
  21. ..and that will be where? When it is set up and established i'll let the board know. Why do you ask?
  22. When I put it out onto public display, maybe you can come down and take a look at it. Oh, and the book was first published into english in the mid to late 80's, but had been around in German for much longer then that.
  23. I've heard other wise, but thanks for your input. Really, it only follows logic if you are familiar with the capabilities of the size of the miniature wetland (for that is what is is to a degree) involved, even with an excellent choice of plants. Far from new rechnology, though...this is a concept that has been in use for a century. OK, great, thanks for the info.

  25. Unfortunately, my discus refuse garlic. They claim it gives them bad breath and horrible gas! Try using a homeopathic dose, they won't even know it's in the food, and just tell them not to eat any chunks or if they do, tell them not to chew it as that is what causes the bad breath. As far as the gas goes, then they should follow through with the garlic cuz that's just from the garlic cleaning out all the accumulated bile cause by junk food. (:
