  1. They are an amazing fish. I kept and bred several colonies of them out east. As was mentioned, the males stay fertile for only afew years, and then stop breeding, so you'll need to import some new stock occasionally. New mothers are not good at keeping their fry, and will often spit early when food is offered. I usually stripped after 15 days and reared the fry in a tumbler till the yolks disappeared. I've had clutches of over 75 fry! Baby brine works well, but also various smaller white worms. They do need a large area of sand to build their nest, butnwatchingnthe male display his colours while breeding is spectacular. Probably one of the most colourful Tangs. Good luck!
  2. Well, I hope so, because it was offered in a constructive way. Maybe some discussions will be generated by it, and help things out.
  3. I absolutely agree that a club is what the members and volunteers make of it. I spent 6 years in another city and worked diligently with the fish club as everything from V.P. to BAP chair to auction organizers plus everything that went between. When I left town I really felt like we had done some good and the club is a really well run unit. Clubs need good people, but more importantly, they need new blood. If you don't entice new members, those existing members will eventually get burnt out. How do you attract new members if the only exposure to on members is the website and you limit it's access. My comment was simply asked as an outsider trying to get a peek into how things are. The site is too restrictive I feel, in that non-members can't access really anything, other than a few ads and an outdated notice board about upcoming meetings. Let people have limited access to view the workings of the club, and maybe you'll see an increase in your membership. Seems kind of senseless posting this on a third party website, but I was just trying to understand where this club was headed. I think I know the answer.
  4. I've watched the website(what little one can access without being a member)for several months to try and get a sense of the club and their activities. I can't help but notice how slow updates are with regard to upcoming meetings. I believe meetings are held the second Tuesday of every month, but even as of today there is no mention of a February meeting, as January is still posted. I believe a club is much more than a website, but it is the face that many of us rely on to help understand how viable the club is. I have to say, it sure seems un-organized.
  5. I paid $500. But that was also to pick it up and deliver it about 50kms away from his shop. new starfire front and two new sides. They replaced almost the whole tank except for the back. The black silicone looks really impressive with the starfire glass.
  6. I just took a 220 gal to B & I (now called Bow Valley Aquariums). We just moved here from out East, and the tank unfortunately sprung a leak and then actually broke the seal! Anyway, it was a rush deal as I had the fish to keep alive, and they did a great job. They do come across as kind of disorganized, but they did a really impressive job on the tank, replacing the front piece with a new starfire glass piece. They completely tore it down, stripped all the sealant, resealed it with the new glass, and put in new side pieces, top and euro bracing. I wanted to keep my background attached to the back, as it took so long to build, and they accomodated that as well. I would not hesitate to recommend their workmanship, as long as you are patient.
  7. Have you tried www.kensfish.com? I dealt with him for over 10 years and they have some amazing prices on other stuff as well. He has his own line of high end foods, and also most other major brands. Just don't use priority shipping to Canada or you'll get stuck with a pretty hefty shipping bill. Normal ground shipping is fair, and best is if you can have him ship it to a US address and arrange to pick itup.
  8. Actually we used to live here and moved out East for the last ten years due to the job. Glad to be back, but you're right..the weather is always an issue. I always remember fall around here is about a week long. Leaves turn yellow, first wind comes along and knocks them all off, and then falls over! Of all the seasons, fall out east is pretty spectacular with the colour. But they don't get chinooks, although I heard we didn't have too many last year. Thanks for all the welcomes. Tank is still being set up. If anyone might have some healthy bacteria they could spare me to help get the big tank cycled, I sure would appreciate it. Just an old filter mat or some media, that has lots of good bacteria, and I can replace it with some new media. Even some gravel or sand would help start things. I'm doing a fishless cycle with ammonia, but still takes 3-4 weeks. Thanks again!
  9. Hi, Just relocated to Cochrane from Ottawa, and wanted to share some ideas. I was actively importing wild caught Tanganyikan Cichlids and had a small breeding business(about 60 tanks). I had a few customers out in Calgary, and one in Edmonton. Had to scale things way back to just one big display tank now, and am in the process of getting it re-set up. I've been keeping Tangayikans for over 30 years and have been to the lake twice. Still trying to evaluate the water here to determine how sucessful I'll be at getting them to thrive here. Cheers Mark
