  1. Say, does routing your co2 through your canister make the impeller chatter?
  2. I only looked at tanks once. The difference between buying 5# and 10# aluminum was around $50, maybe a bit less. But, admittedly, I haven't ever checked what trade-in upgrades cost. So without some empirical trade-in comparisons, it's hard to make a reasonable value judgement. One reason the trade-in price might seem expensive, is because the 5# tank you have is steel and not aluminum. edit: thanks for the T2 link! edit#2: J&L doesn't accept trade-ins on expended tanks. They will issue a credit only if the tank has a mechanical problem -or- if you return the tank in the same condition as purchased.
  3. Having connections who are willing to help always helps so good for you for not sweating the small stuff! One out of three is better than getting skunked, and that's a small lesson A-types can stand to learn. I, too, look forward to seeing your final builds. Keep the camera rolling
  4. Having industry connections is handy I thought I saw Milwaukee in Weldco some time ago, but any regulator bearing the same namesake as a beer company sounds dubious. Peavey Mart would carry Hobart (~$80). I'd take odds that you could find an acet Uniweld @ Acklands close to your $100 mark. Did you notice ubr0ke's needle valve has a vernier scale on it? Gotta love precision. edit: sp
  5. Wah! Brilliant! Thanks for the tip Crystal!
  6. The only regulators I fiddled with were Parker and ControlAir, paid for out of corperate pocketbooks. But there are some points-of-view in this thread that address your question directly. Therein are several nuggets blink... ubr0ke mentions a high end, 2stage assembly for $120 (at the end of page one). So I've referred back to his build thread from time to time. Good luck! edit: thread link
  7. One day, easterly winds prevailing, I got blown through the doors of some place in west Edmonton called Lee Valley. Odd name eh? Eventually I bought 2 T5HO tubes @ $6.95ea for my 24" fixture. When I turned to head for the door (thinking about a certain Ikea commercial the whole time) I spied a glass cabinet that contained this: http://www.leevalley...2,40725&p=68352 Yes, I know dwt units are now obsolete - after all, pennies are being pulled out of circulation. And besides, who weighs pennies anyways? But it also weighs to 0.1g for things like Levamisole, KMnO4, KH2PO4 et al. edit: topic tags
  8. Yesterday afternoon I heard that familiar rattling sound from my canister impeller. What was it? :well: Well, we've been getting the odd brownout the last few days. But I didn't jot down when I last cleaned my canister. So I wasn't sure if it was the canister stop/starting or cavitation. Since I was pulling my canister apart to investigate anyways, it was maintenance time. I lifted the pump head and what did I find? Scores of tiny RHS inside the canister! Some clinging to the pump head, sitting under the media basket and in the media too. I also found a few MTS and one apple snail. There was about a tbsp of grit in the bottom of the canister housing; after pressing it between my fingers, realized it was empty RHS shells. Fascinating! Maybe it would be worth while replacing that middle layer of balls that look like Cocoa Pebbles, with RHS. Or maybe canister filters should be marketed as a viable means of snail control. Either way, add "one more use" to both.
  9. Oh. So the "smart way" is, in your opinion, is the right way for you, because it's your preference. That's probably how Darwin accounts for monkeys that hadn't evolved... they all got the memo, but some of them didn't think it was a smart idea. I was thinking about using aquasoil a while back and stumbled on a brief by Tom Barr on recharging... he suggests the aquasoil values deplete over time. So recharging is done on the surface (i.e. fert tabs), in the water column, or by replacing the sediment. I'm lazy so I haven't evolved yet. Say The_Little_One, maybe send a pm to ubrOke. He has given me some solid science to think about so he might have some insights on this. He has a few tank photos on here that you can have a boo at. Let us know what kind of start you go with. Here's to you!
  10. Very good guess, and life would be better if you sold them to me
  11. I bet you have (at least) two extras
  12. I wonder if that's a problem exclusive only to green hose and not the blue stuff. Good point. If you can't see the crud building up then it's easier to ignore.
  13. +1 While you're cycling your tank MikeScott, you can search the database here for info on what "cycling" can look like. You will discover several approaches to the process, but they generally fall into two categories (maybe three) with functional variations for each. Of course, it's always good to have a helping hand from folks who have been there done that. Be sure to share some photos of your journey... and your next tank too.
  14. I don't have a Member journal I'll sell to the highest bidder.
  15. This IS what I'm up to. While in Mexico my fish were in tap water plus some extra hardness for good measure. Now its time for some cool soft water, good food, peat, dim lights and hopefully some Pleco sexyness. Experimenting with ph, hardness -and- motivating twitter-pation in a certain pr of oscars... that's all I ever used it for. I just hucked a gob in cheese cloth and plopped it in the top side of my HOB. No peat particles in the water; no death in the family or a poor dental check up either. But it did tint the water. I took some from a bag of garden peat in mom and dad's garage, right beside a bag that said "steer manure." I'm pretty sure I took peat, because ph dropped... and I didn't have any pansies growing in the HOB. But I think an aquarium HOB planter is a heck of an idea Jay. Kinda like those rail planters in garden centers. Pansies or tulips would drown, but picture a line of HOBs with a water tupelo or cypress growing out of them. Say! It'd be a way to win over to those less charitable towards MTS Welcome back btw
  16. Hence the thread title eh? I love this forum, I really do. Now tell me... are all three laughing faces turning at the same rate?

  18. juss funnin' the rrh in the tank started it. I'd wait until the water flow carried them to the front and I'd mash 'em against the glass. But seeing that shrimp doing the same thing made me laugh, and I had to share it. The word is getting around though. Today I counted 5 hanging upside down on d/w roots playing spiderman. Funny. Maybe I should charge admission.
