  1. I keep reading that those killies will look old at about a year and live to "maybe 15 months". I can't find a ton of good information and at $17/fish I'm not sure I want to try pioneering with them. Can anyone point me at a decent killi resource, most of the ones I've looked at don't have any behavioral information just basic info or huge walls o text regarding breeding and nothing else lol. Or are killies not typically good community fish? Discus sure can be beautiful but I thought they might need more space than i can give. I'll look further into them though.
  2. neons are cute but not really what I'd call really showy, I guess I'm old school where I'm so used to people having neons as their first fish. Im looking for something around the 2-3" mark and less common than neons.
  3. Can you help me find a killie or something brightly colored and really showy that will work with my celestial pearl danios and red cherry shrimp? My fiancee and I saw some nothobranchius rachovii and fell slightly in love, until we found out they are an annual species. They are a beautiful fish but it would be so disheartening to know they're only going to live a year or thereabouts (unless my research lied to me??) Many of the fish I've looked at will eat either the danios or the shrimp, if not both and honestly, I've run out of things to google based on seeing them in the LFS and going "oooo". We have a way understocked 27 gallon column to play with and we're looking for 2-4 colorful and hopefully lively/personable fish to bring my tank alive.
  4. I was wondering the same thing, I contacted Tanker a while back but I figure maybe he was busy with the server move and it got missed or back burnered. Guess I'll try again
  5. PJs has the 405 for $179 up here, I think that's about the best I've seen one locally. This place offers the 406 for $220, I've never dealt with them, but at least they're Canadian. http://www.petsandponds.com/en/aquarium-supplies/c5809/c7359/p22295.html
  6. PJs had em for the same price, IIRC, but there are no PJs in Calgary. I'll keep an eye open.
  7. I hate trying to cut circles out of filter floss For me the $5-6 is worth it in spades, but that being said, I've Never seen filter media that was sealed well enough to be considered sterile, not even the $17/pad Eheim junk. Going a bit further, I've never seen an aquarium that was sealed well enough for it to matter lol
  8. I was wandering around the big box petstore tonight, killing time and waiting for my woman and gravitating to the filter and stuff aisle. Looking around at the mostly Hagen products I spot the FX-5 canister media and noticed it was about the same size as the refills for my Eheim 2215. Hmm, says I, that's interesting. Then I noticed the price, well, for $5 per box of 3 fine filter pads and $6 per box of water polishing pads I had to bring some home to check out. They fit. Should be an interesting test, I'll try to remember to keep this updated. I'm not sure if this is a revelation or one of those trade secrets but a quick google while standing in the store deliberating it didn't turn anything up so I figured I'd give it a shot
  9. Huzzah! Mission accomplished, rona on 97 street had it even though the person I spoke to this afternoon said they were out of stock. Now I get to rinse it. Thanks for pointing me at Rona
  10. Called a bunch of places and no one seems to have it although a few have it on order, I bought a bag of brown fluorite with hopes to mix it but I didn't realize how much the color differed until I got home, now I'm pondering whether to mix or get another bag of fluorite... I found a place locally that is listed as a Turface MVP dealer and have called about availability and cost but not heard back yet, would anyone else be interested in splitting a bag?
  11. I bought some at Khulmanns years ago but haven't had any luck finding more yet. I'll give Rona a try tomorrow.
  12. Zombie thread is zombie... Where can I find this in Edmonton?
  13. Petcetera might have exactly what you are looking for, I was there the other day for the first time in years and noticed they had Aqueon parts with brass fittings on plastic housings. I didn't inspect them too closely but I seem to recall seeing that part or something VERY similar. The location was Millwoods (not sure if there are other locations).
  14. I've seen them at Pisces pet in Calgary but haven't used them myself, reviews seem to be generally positive though.
  15. I would also immediately look at the silicone, typically the reptile community suggests at least a week, more often 2-6 weeks to ensure that it's completely safe. I know you probably don't want to hear that considering your fish are in a rubbermaid but GE states that "most of the outgassing will occur in the first 24 hours but may continue for up to 1 week" and in this situation I'd suggest to push it as long as you can before adding water and fish again.
  16. I've been poking around the net trying to find out how long it takes to get a bacterial culture in a sponge filter and it's either "a couple days" or "7-8 weeks". Erm, that's quite a variance, does anyone here have practical experience? I'm looking at upgrading my tank, going from a 12 gallon to a 27 and I'd like to use the sponge filter and the sponge insert from my aquaclear to jumpstart the cycle in the new tank and I'd hate to shoot myself in the foot by transferring the sponge too early. However, I've also read that if I increase filtration on my current tank (by adding the sponge filter) I also should increase bio-load, is this really an issue or am I going to get some bacteria growth with my current bio-load? I did turn down my aquaclear to minimum to try and put some of the load on the sponge but I don't know if that's really viable or just seemed like a good idea at the time.
  17. That's a great price on the Ebi, can't find them for under $135 here in Edmonton.
  18. I don't own an Ebi but my fiancee wants one something fierce. They seem like great lil tanks with tons of potential, I know there are literally dozens of them on plantedtank.net!
  19. They've got heaters at Walmart that are fully submersible, reasonably small and cheap... they're even brand name and decent quality (I ran one for three years in a frog tank with great results) but non adjustable. Depending on how warm you keep your house will decide how much that matters, if you only need to heat the water a few degrees then it shouldn't be too much of an issue but PLEASE do check the water temperature with a thermometer before adding livestock.
  20. I recently had euthanize a fish and it's tough but better than just leaving it to wither away imo. The clove oil/alcohol method puts them to sleep then finishes it quickly and I read that its one of the few home methods that's considered humane. Freezing is considered cruelty now I guess but I know for years it was the method of choice.
  21. If this weekend wasn't such a gong show we'd been planning on a trip down there, perhaps next time.
  22. I remember someone looking for HC not too long ago and I wasn't sure where else to post this. Anyhow, PJs WEM has 4-5 tubs of it at the usual $12/tub. Looked nice and green when I inspected it tonight.
  23. It looks pretty boss but I can't imagine cleaning it would be any fun, or water changes. If I could afford to have someone come in and maintain it I'd consider one just for bragging rights.
  24. Thanks you two, I'll try it and post up if anything negative happens.
  25. Red jungle brand. Seems to be made by ocean star international
