  1. Such nice rays. Congrats on the pups. Can't wait until I can get into the black rays myself. Last place I found them were $3000 a piece though . Saving up now.
  2. Wow, you guys are all making this seem like it's such a complex process. I've moved 6ft tanks up and down stairs with 2 people (both of us just 160lbs). Just be careful with your backs when lifting. If you're worried that two of you can't get it done then enlist some help to make it easier on you guys (recommended). The tank should be fine on end at the bottom of the stairs to pivot. Just put a few layers of towels down on the floor at the bottom of the stairs so you don't scratch the tank up.
  3. I see you already got some new stuff. But I found that pool filter sand works great. It's silica based so it won't scratch your tank and it doesn't clump up like playground or beach sand allowing better circulation, it's also heavier than sandbox sand so it doesn't get kicked up into the filter as easily. It's the same colour as regular beach sand and costs about $20 for a 50lb bag so it's quite affordable for big tanks.
  4. Sponge filters sound like a good idea. I'm sure I have a few somewhere I can lying around. I know all too well about sealing lids. When I got my bichirs my seat got a tad bit stained in the process. But it's the price you pay. I'm pretty confident the move should be alright, the oscars got moody when I left and didn't eat for 5 days I was told. They're all pretty hardy fish too which is nice, came home to one bichir dry on the ground with hair all over, took 2 days of floating up top but he came around just fine. Invested in a better top soon after. I'll probably need something from Edmonton sometime so I'll keep you in mind Sierra. Thanks again for the tips
  5. Well, I'm in the process of moving to Hinton from Vancouver and my fish tank is the next step coming up and I've never moved fish without them in a tank longer than 2-3 hours. I have 2 oscars 11" each, 5 bichirs 12-15" and 3 geos 6". My plan is to put the bichirs in a rubbermaid, but I'm not sure whether or not I would be better off with 5 gal buckets or something a little bit bigger for the others. I don't think they really need much more space than that because I don't think they'll do much swimming in the move, but I'm not sure if the smaller amount of water will matter. I'll be putting heaters in each container with an air pump set up to keep the water heated/oxygenated for the ride. They'll be kept inside the truck too. I'm setting up bigger totes full of water with a filter running before I leave back for when I get here to put the fish in because I'm sure I won't want to set up the tank after the drive. My questions are: is there anything I can add to the water to reduce the stress on the fish in the move? I've read about bag buddies in another topic but I'm not familiar with them and have never seen them. And does my plan for the move seem like it will work alright or are there any suggestions? Also, does anyone know what sort of tap water conditions are in Hinton? Anything I need to treat before adding fish? Thanks in advance and look forward to meeting everyone
  6. Senegals stay pretty small and could probably be kept in there. Mine topped off at 11" which may be pushing it in a 35g but if you get one small and don't overfeed then you could probably keep it a long time. Not much of a chance with any others unless you want to get rid of them around 8-9" when get start to get more girth.
  7. Hi there, new to the province and forum. Moved to Hinton from Vancouver and need a few closer communities for fish junkies. My tanks are still in Vancouver and I miss them dearly. My current setups are a 150g with 2 oscars, some bichirs and geos right now, going to be adding an arowana or two and some stingrays once I get the tanks moved here. I also have a 120g fly river turtle tank, but the roomy is keeping that one in Vancouver. I will probably end up setting up another couple smaller tanks as I want to build a schooling tropical tank with a few hundred fish in it as well as some smaller breeder tanks to stock it. Look forward to meeting everyone I have the same name on BC Aquaria if anyone uses that forum (I think I've seen a few from here)
