  1. You need a heavily planted tank and not to put your hands anywhere near a breeding pair. I saw in an episode of river monsters that in brazil a group of breeding piranhas attacked several people swimming on the beach, just because they were too close to their breeding grounds.
  2. My chocolate cichlids love to eat them. I just hear the crunching sound of their shells. Their tank is 100% free of snails. My other tanks have colonies going because I don't mind them and I can always use them as feeders. I personally think snails are part of a healthy balanced tank. I don't think they look ugly. They have a role to play, as you said, feeding on extra food, algae, dead plants and even dead fish.
  3. looks great and mean What are you feeding it?
  4. I originally purchased my plants at pisces pet, and they reproduce like mad. I have lots of it. I will give them to you in trade for your gosht knife and your 3 ameca
  5. I see the knife fish growing and eating all of your smaller fish
  6. What I hate the most is parasites, they are creepy, and they don't kill your fish, they just slowly feed on them  and I assume that yes, you can autopsy a fish, look for damaged organs, chemicals, etc... Maybe you should bring a water sample to your LFS so they can check it for any dangerous chemicals.
  7. Death sometimes is capricious and inexplicable. An autopsy was needed, but now without a body there is not way to investigate this sad incident
  8. That tank I think has not hope, repairing it is too expensive but you could use the remaining glass panels to build plywood DIY fish tanks. Or maybe you can get one of those fancy backgrounds and heavily silicone it to the broken glass after heavily sealing and reinforcing the broken piece.
  9. For feeder fish you should try endlers. They breed very easily in a tropical tank. They don't deposit eggs, they give birth to living fry. Sometimes the parasites infecting your newt might be tropical, and therefore reducing the temperature of your tank under 5 degrees can kill them, add bath salts and medication and your Newt can be healthy again. If it survives the treatment
  10. Maybe it is an anchor worm. The first thing you should do, is quarantine your sick newt before it infects the others. Second, according to the species you need to find proper treatment.
  11. Rays and arowanas make good tank mates. You just have to provide something for the aros to watch on top so they don't develop droppy eyes. Or you could also go for some nice odd balls like knife fish
  12. What type of turtles and rays do you have? because some rays can get really big, and also the turtles :s 500 gallons might not be big enough for adult animals. Also the turtles might bite the rays
  13. Endlers are very sturdy fish, I don't have guppies, and about 10 breeding couples of endlers. They reproduce like mad, there are always 100's of fry in my tank. They live with my discus, and the discus keep their numbers on check. I occasionally use them as feeders when their numbers skyrocket If anybody wants some, I am willing to trade breeding couples for large shrimp or blue neon tetras
  14. I wanted to get a small colony of Neon Tetras for my discus tank, I saw them the past weekend for 2 bucks in BigAls Calgary. Wednesday I decided to go get them, when I visited the store, they were still on sale, but covered on ick. IMHO, these big fish stores should do a better job putting their fish on quarantine before putting them on sale. Also I think it is unethical to put sick fish on sale or on display tanks :P I will still shop at BigAls because they have nice deals on oddballs every once in a while. I just wish they did a better job handling their life stock. I guess for now the only option we have, is to quarantine the fish ourselves
  15. IMHO, Finding a new place to set up your new tank properly and give time to bacteria colonies, chemicals, and temperatures to settle would be the best. I don't know what kind of fish do you have, but many don't handle very well the stress and quick chemical/temperature changes. If you have no other option, I think that large dark rubber maids with heaters, plenty of air, lids and the water from the same tank the fish are coming off would do for a few hours, but this is a risky operation. Just think about this....Are my fish expendable? are they sturdy or fragile? then choose your path
  16. I purchased mine at BigAls in Calgary. But they don't bring them often. If you find where to get them let me know, since I want to get more Here is a video of mine eating
