  1. Yes again, an old thread but info can still be given. I'd have to say 50%/50% . I mean that 50% of the fish stores lack knowledge of what is an aquatic plant and what isn't an aquatic plant The other 50% have the knowledge, know the difference and still have it for sale. Why then? Because someone bought something that looks pretty at the time...and the store knows when it dies you'll be back to buy another plant. It's a business...they want you to buy over and over...they need your $ for their profit.
  2. good brine shrimp should hatch within 5 days...19 days sounds odd. Are you doing the typical, warmish water...constant bubble...have a tad of salt in the water ?
  3. I guess people are talking about subcontractors and contractors...I guess I'll say one of my own previous hats. I was a new build framer as well as a renovator for a time in my life. So I do know what i'm talking about. I agree with jeremoose...nothing really needs to be done. However the joist cross-bracing is never a bad idea and is something that can easily be done by the homeowner to improve their house. One of the first tasks I do in a new home is to do that. Just took this earlier today. 1st floor joists in my current house
  4. Do you have access to the joists or is there a permanent ceiling below? IF you have full access to the joists do this and you will not need any sort of telepost. Want to do some good dyi...do this across your entire floor @ three foot spaces. You will give your house an improvement and up resale. If you do this...use pl construction adhesive with 3" screws. You'd be shocked at what this will actually accomplish to redirect downward forces. The last floor I did this on, it was close to 100 cross braces spaced every three feet on every available joist void. Builders should to this as the norm but if you want it done it's an extra $. If you don't have access do this. There are many ways to install a telepost such as this. Teleposts @ totem After that do this to hide it if you like:

  7. silicone. funny you mentioned this. I've started a thread to solve your problem. http://albertaaquati...showtopic=36149 Search google for super glue in an aquarium environment. I've read stories about people using it for such things. quick note: if you use silicon and the set time is longer...use a form for your creative display until it holds. Even crumple up some newspaper and use tape to create the perfect form your looking for.

  9. Updated: Started list of 'Death Tank' products. Know of anymore? Drop me a line so I can add it. I've started this topic in hopes that a neat and organized list be compiled of aquarium safe silicone. Such info is spread all over AA in many posts. When adding your own listing, please include the following: 1. The product name in text form 2, A picture of the tube that shows the name of the product 3. A picture of the product's use area which states 'safe for aquarium use' 4. A picture of the product's upc I've mainly asked for pictures as it is more quickly referenced than a text list of names and numbers. However I also asked the products name in text form so that specific brand can still be found with a search. I've never needed (yet) to use silicone in an aquarium environment so I cannot add any data. I'll leave it up for the members @ AA to populate this topic. If you have this information and don't want to post yourself, pm me with pictures and I'll add everything in this one post with credit shown as to who added what products. Order in times of posted or pm'd with info. 10. I wouldn't call them 'great ambassadors' of their products. The bottom line is that they want to sell you their product, period. Why do you think they changed their MSDS for Excel! For some specific questions it's like pulling teeth to get a direct response. Especially for something that might show a limitation of their products. Aside from that as long as it's known what purigen does and does not do, there is no concerns in using on any planted tank. Don't buy their stupid purigen etc bags...make your own. To to a fabric shop and buy half a yard of organza...don't forget to use polyester thread. Make your filter bag in any shape or form you want. It comes in handy when you use it for an odd shape inside a canister filter as I have done.
  11. Purigen will not cause your plants to be harmed by what it does. Its fine for planted tanks etc etc. I've been using it for years. regarding the shrimp...yes use it with them too...with anything. If you use peat to lower your ph for crs it WILL remove the tannin ALONG with the humic acid. So you will just swing your ph. Lower your ph by another method than peat.
  12. I stand by what I wrote. If someone should not have posted on an older topic...there should be a rule saying so or it should be locked. There are many things that can be done on a local scale which do not involve turning aa into some mega multinational site. I'm going to stop here and say nothing ever again...as this will just be flamed.
  13. Haven't seen a all-in-one post on AA so thought I'd put this together from my bookmarks. Below are various dosing calculators of which I took screen shots to show you what's offered. 15. I'd recommend to just be upfront about the needing a licence and ask about it when you say you want to buy PP. From my understanding, a licence to be able to sell it.. Too bad your not in Calgary, I'd go splits with you. By chance I had gone to the local walmart, it was not on their list...I had gone to superstore, I was told NO in a loud voice! heh OR just play ignorant of needing the licence...as it really isn't YOUR concern...it is theirs. In my case, since it is a special order...I had to pay for it upfront. When shoppers said no, I just got my refund and left.
  16. there is a small neighborhood pharmacy...better service too!
  17. This is more of an fyi, so you don't go through the same hassle. A couple days back I had put in an order for this @ my local Shoppers Drug Mart. After them going back and forth between me, their own head office and Health Canada...it was discovered that they need a licence to sell this chemical. Even though I paid for this product, the product came in and I was there to pick it up I was refused since this particular location does not have said licence. I ended up going elsewhere for this purchase. If you have not previously bought PP, I'd suggest that you ask BEFORE you purchase to make sure they have this licence. Upon doing a quick google search, I came up with this document : http://www.hc-sc.gc....omestic-eng.php Hope this will help someone.
  18. Perhaps. I know they want to bring the woolly mammoth back !
  19. Agree...the only thing I've seen are glow in the dark various worms/flys and creatures of deep ocean. died (yes right spelling), not natural.
  20. less than 2g for me. close to a 1 gal I think. don't add an air pump...you'll have a line in on the side...a BZZZZZZ at the side of the desk...it'll take away from that nice small pico look. Throw in a couple small plants...give it good light but not direct sun and find a couple of the smallest fish you an buy. Once your plants are, if you want to call 'established' in a 1 gal tank, then you can cut down on the frequency of the WC. Perhaps some some dedicated snail colony in one.
  21. give a Google search for " moss balls aquarium "
