  1. Id disagree. I have used tap exclusively since starting the salt hobby 10 years ago and have never once had cyano because of the tap water. I have found it comes when the tank is over fed, under skimmed, or there is a build up of detritus in the tank.
  2. I picked up a tabk tonight with funny dimensions 31 1/4 x 12 is outside dimensions with 6mm glass. I would like to out lights over this tank and have a cover over it. Any ideas? Btw this will be a low tech planted tank with LED or T5
  3. Get it from the best. Dave @ Concept Aquatics
  4. Mistakes happen in saltwater and they cost money. If I were you I would make the mistakes, learn from them and have a better knowledge of a saltwater tank. Ive been reefing for 10 years and still make mistakes because you always want to push the envelope and try new things. But you learn what you can do and what you cant.
  5. I have a small 20L dwarf SA chichlid tank and this is pure inspiration! I love the grass look, what kind of plants are those Id love to add some to my tank.
  6. Congrats! $50 is crazy over priced! Down here they have some HUGE males for $30 and smaller EBR for $25. I dont know why theirs would be $50 and not replace the fish because of their mistake!
  7. I am making a trip into Calgary tomorrow (saturday) and am looking for a couple Female Moscow Black Guppies. Anyone know where I can get some?
  8. I never said it hurts them I said running too cool and they dont run properly/optimally. Jerry also mentions nothing about temperature but he does mention current.
  9. Jerry thats what we are saying your better off to run them at a lower wattage.
  10. I dont think it kills them I just dont think its optimum running temperature.
  11. Too hot and you seriously reduce the life, yes. But I haven't heard anything about running too cool in all my research. Do you have links for this? I'm curious as mine run from all the way off to full power (full power is about 50% of max recommended current for my particular fixture). I dont have them anymore but if you spend some time on Reef Central you can find it there.
  12. Get in touch with martin at Modular LeD for those exotic strips. I have used them in my biocube and will probably go back to them. You dont need 3w LED like previosly mentioned but a 3w LED running at 30% will last longer than a 1w running at 100%. LEDs have an optimum running temperature range. Too hot and they die quicky, too cool and they dont work properly.
  13. Man I wish I could keep them with my Apisto and Rams
  14. What kind of shrimp are those? They look amazing!
  15. Has anyone tried New Era Tropical Fish food? I feed the marine flake almost exclusive to my marine tank. I have seen a major increase in color of my fish over the NLS flake and Prime Reef flake. I talked to my friend who owns a LFS here in Lethbridge about the New Era Tropical Flake and he said none of his fish liked it. So tell me your experience with New Era.
  16. Thats my problem too I cant seem to give this thing away.
  17. Welcome to the forum. I used to live in GP and worked alot in that area. I sure miss Northern AB.
  18. Hey blink I have a 36" tek housing with tek legs I want to get rid of.
  19. You guys are right and wrong. LEDs need to have optics to really punch through water. At 20" you might want to consider the marineland reef bright LED. As for the 6500k start on rapidLED i know cree makes a 6500K
  20. Any pictures of the adults? I just picked up an Orange Flash pair myself!
  21. I was going to ask about keeping Electric Blue Rams with apistos. Thanks for clearing it up for me!
  22. I am setting up a planted tank and this was a huge help! Thank you to the OP
  23. Hello Everyone, I am mostly a Saltwater guy but like most started in freshwater. I have mostly kept discus and absoloutly love these fish. I had a big reef tank in my house but recently tore it down which really dropped my humidity, as expected. I raise reptiles and found I was starting to have problems with them as the humidity was so low so I used this as an excuse to set up a small freshwater tank in there to bring the humidity up. Its a 20g Long run by an exlipse filter and no heater. My room is temperature controlled to 80 degrees ad the tank consistantly runs at 79. So far there is just a Moscow Black guppy in it but have found a pair of Cockatoo cichlids, I beleive Orange Flash. The tank was set up for these small cichlids so I am not sure whatelse to add, maybe some rams. If all goes well I may upgrade to a 40g "breeder" and add a few discus as well. Anyway just wanted to say hello.
