  1. OK a even dozen sounds good to me thanks.I may have to cut back on the amount of driftwood I was planning to use to give the Rummynose some swimming room.
  2. So I have gotten tired of looking at a empty 20 g every time I go into the fish room was wondering if GBR and Rummynose would be happy in this size tank.It will be med.planted with swords, apons & Java ferns.Would a trio of GBR and six Rummynose work maybe a Longfin Albino Bristtlenose for clean up duties.Thoughts
  3. Don't do it will not survive trip through the dishwasher. If tank is to be stored wash out with bleach and water 20 parts water to 1 part bleach rinse out really good, dry cover top with saran wrap good to go when your ready to start it up again.
  4. J&L Aquatics had the best $ on the Classics when I was shopping last month they come complete with double taps & all of the media.Just make sure you have room under or beside your tank for the canister.
  5. No experience with the pro series I did look into them when I was looking for replacement canisters. It is a newer system that has had problems so I decided to pass until it builds up a reliability record.Media baskets are nice but I see no use for a priming button other than a place to break & develop a leak.
  6. Just recently changed out my fluval 405 for the 2217 been using it for a month no complaints so far much quieter than the fluval.I choose the classic because it is a proven design and should run for years without the maintenance ( replacement parts $$$$) and leak problems that happen with others. Cleaning is a bit more involved but I use a sponge pre-filter over the intake which I rinse out during each WC so my canisters only get opened every three to four months all rinsed in a bucket of aquarium water just like you would an HOB.The classics do hold large amounts of media my 2217 held all of the 405 bio max and only filled it half way,so I use a small kitchen colander to help rinse it out.
  7. I agree jvision those Rainbows must be very happy and very well fed
  8. Only running aqua-clears on 2 x 20g right now.(others switched to canisters)as for evaporation a tight fitting glass top makes a big difference. The glass top tank with single bright LED is fine between WC other requires topping up half way through the week.I keep both tanks full so haven't experienced any restart problems after power failures, fingers crossed but will converting to canisters just to be sure.
  9. Doing some maintenance & clean up I noticed what I think is a strange way for a Aponogeton to propagate.I have a few hybrids that look a lot like Aponogeton Crispus they are sending up what looks like flower stems but they formed new bulbs that have grow roots and started sending out leaves of their own.Has anybody come across this before? When can I separate the new bulbs and plant them?
  10. Snails has always been the least of my worries when it comes to hitch hikers on plants. Some of the more interesting critters includes damsel fly larva, dragon fly larva and my all time favorite some small grey leaches.I wish I could discover some Rainbows or other less offensive critters and plants.
  11. If your not in a hurry River Front has 2 for 1 for fish and plants every 2nd Saturday of the month. They usually have a tank full of cardinals.
  12. I know all tanks have different variables & I'm not sure how it would effect your nerite snail but in my situation safe guard didn't harm fish, shrimp or plants but destroyed mts & pond snails but did not effect ramshorn snails? Be careful !!
  13. Also heard a tip a few years ago where people freeze a half filled 1L pop bottle and drop 1 or 2 into tank in order to cool the tank down. I have used this method with no problems on med. planted community tank when temps. start creeping into the med. 80's
  14. From my limited experience with Bettas I have kept they all have their own personality's some got a long fine in a community set up (mine only terrorized the pond snails) while others made life tough for all.It comes down to luck of the draw.
  15. Sounds like it would work better than the old tooth brush trick. Thanks
  16. Boiling water did the trick 2217 is up and running all is well.Funny after everything was running I checked out Eheim's directions WOW if someone wasn't familiar with canisters they would never get it running, very vague and leaves a lot to the imagination.
  17. Jason Thanks for the speedy response I'll give it a try and will check the garage for some small hose claps in my rush to get this 405 out of my house wasn't as careful with my research or planning.
  18. Picked up a new Eheim 2217 to replace my leaky 405 didn't realize out flow tube is only 1/2" while the intake is 5/8". So my problem is I have a Hydor ETH with 5/8" fittings has anybody seen of a fitting that I can use to adapt the different size hoses.Or can I fit heater to the inflow side of the canister.
  19. Can't beat Aqua-clears for small tanks economical and durable.I have several scattered around in 10 & 20 gallon tanks.
  20. I too like the tray system that's why I went with Fluvals but maintaining them is wearing me out and destroying my floors LOL so durability is now more important than convenience.
  21. I have never used a Eheim but that is the direction I'm leaning to right now, going to keep it simple and try the classic line 2217 / 600 to replace the 405's

    Hydor Fans

I have been shopping for new filters to replace my unreliable Fluvals and found that Hydor is bringing out a new line of canisters.Very few if any reviews and a bit pricey but I have no complaints with any of their other products I have used.
  23. Big Al's has 3 or 4 oz.cans sorry not sure of the $.
  24. I know the feeling I also have several fluvals and like them but the flaws are starting to wear on me.Another I have noticed on one of my 405's is the canister is warped causing a weak seal between the motor and canister bucket,I did fix it with a couple of wraps of teflon tape in the grove that holds the main o-ring seal this stopped the leak when motor is running but turn off the power with the valve open and watch out. I too will be upgrading looks like the Eheim 2073 can be had for about the same $ as the new 406's so might have to give them a try.But I will also be modifying my stand so I can set the canisters in a shallow tray with a drain hose running through the floor to a basement drain, and I will be drilling some holes in the intake tubes as well.
