  1. Nice and yes I agree shells are crazy prices, kills me to watch mine bury the shells and spawn in the rock piles.LOL
  2. OK back on topic of the auction Sunday how did people do?I picked up a red tiger lotus at very good $ at the beginning when most weren't paying attention, and a trio of M.boesemani Lake Aytinjo. Like to say thanks Calgary Aquarium Society always enjoy myself at these.
  3. Hopefully these are in the breeders cull tank. They are deformed version of a beautiful fish that have no business being offered for sale. Just my 2ยข ya I have to agree +1

  6. I've had good luck with a Hydor hooked up to the out flow on mine.I used small automotive hose claps to secure the hoses, cheap insurance against leaks.
  7. Rams will be just fine in Calgary tap I worried about the same before I picked some up.Problem is finding quality stock they are a short lived species to begin with try to get quality stock from local members or trusted source.I see your in Calgary and Fairdeal has some wild caught might be your best bet. Enjoy they are a great little fish lots of personality some aggression they are chiclids but nothing more than some minor chasing all will be fine in a planted tank with hiding spots.
  8. Lee Valley 6500K 2 for $25
  9. Every six months all of my intakes are covered with foam pre-filters they get rinsed out under hot tap water every week during water changes. All canisters are filled with nothing but bio-media.
  10. Nitrites can be tricky when I fishless-cycled I used seeded media as well. When I dosed ammonia then did my tests 24hrs. later nitrites always showed zero so did ammonia, but I did show nitrates.Try testing for nitrites a few hours after dosing ammonia regardless you should be able to start stocking slowly.
  11. Java Fern works crazy glue it to the rock work.
  12. With my very limited experience breeding fish I have had the best luck using Sera-Micron as the 1st food for rainbow fry I like it because of its convenience and I can see if the fry are eating because they end up with a green belly, but it has proved lacking in the growth department,so I begin to introduce live food as soon as possible three days is my rule.Miro-worms in small amounts the fry show interest but usually aren't able to eat them until about the fifth day when they begin to pick off the smallest worms. At this point growth takes off and I can start adding BBS to the feeding schedule once fry start in on the miro-worms & BBS I stop the Sera-Micron and switch to NLS grow out that I grind up using a mortar & pestle. I use a bare bottom tank, for clean up crew its a combination of pond & MTS snails.WC are every two days 25% in the 1st two weeks then 50% from there on. Its all been experimentation so far but I've learned live foods which may not be convenient are your best friend with fry and WC lots of WC. I would like to try Cyclop Eeze & Golden Pearls one of these days, blackworms I have so I might grind up some for s***s & giggles see how they like it.
  13. I'm no expert but look up Columnaris hope all goes well.

  15. Might have been mentioned on here before but here it goes Lee Valley carries the Sunblaster T5HO 54w lamps 6400K for $9.95. I grabbed four today saving myself a bunch of cash.
  16. $25 is not too much for piece of mind but due tell where you find them most LFS and on line shops don't carry or list them is this a DIY project? I got all of mine from Dr Foster and Smith online. Its the Azoo temperature controller for $25 each. Two plugs for a total 700w total, 1 sensor of course. Shipping is kind of slow but reliable. Hope that helps.

    Heaters

Strange coincidence been following this thread the last few days and guess what my brand X heater (no idea what it was but it was old) decides to go wonky on me in my empty quarantine tank.Noticed temp. was at 88F and the heater was still running I let it run temp. hit 110F before I heard a loud audible click.Heater now resides in the garbage and has been replaced by a new Jager .I guess I got off lucky but I should have know better running a old unknown heater for so long.
  19. Excellent points especially the temperature regulation thank you I'll pick up some foam and some pvc tubes and start playing around with a few set ups.

    Heaters

Everybody has their favorites I like Hydor inline heaters for large tanks always proven reliable and they are mounted outside the tank .For smaller tanks like my 20 gallons I use Eheim Jager 75 watt again proven reliable & durable I tend to hard on my equipment always getting banged around and abused.
  21. Ok 30ppi it will be as for fry getting sucked up that was my concern as well that's why I was wondering if I should use two mats with a enough room between them for the up lift tubes. But it might be cheaper in the long run to move the HMF to the end of the tank and use a tank divider to split the tank in two, I just haven't had much luck with the tank dividers in the past never liked how they sit in the tank and water movement was always poor.I was hoping the HMF would serve a duel roll as filter and divider in one.
  22. Looking to set up a old 20 gallon as a grow out tank with a HMF was wondering what to use 20 or 30 ppi? I would like to install it in the middle of the tank do I need two mats with the lift tubes between them discharging to each side? Thanks
  23. Can do seems to be a few members interested the Aru II but I do need to build my small colony then see about some of the red lazers you have when their ready for a new home.
  24. Great thread! nice to see it pop up again I do the same thing with my fry currently housing Chilatherina fasciata "Faowi Village" ( fry ) Gertrudea Aru 2 ( fry ) Melanotaenia trifasciata "Goyder River" ( fry soon I hope ) As they get bigger they will be moved to the appropriate tank to grow out.Just waiting for the boxing day specials to grab some more equipment for the growing gang of Bows.
  25. Trying to build up my small colony 4M 3 older 1 youngster 5F .They are set up in 20g planted and I was wondering why I wasn't able to collect any eggs in the spawning mops or seeing any fry swimming around. So I sat down and spied on them to see what was up,lots of sparing and chasing and then I noticed all the females are choosing to lay their eggs on the sponge pre-filter to the intake for my canister filter :cuss: I have been washing all the eggs of the down the sink every week.So now to out smart the little buggers I'm going to be tossing the pre-filters into the hatching bucket every week and hope I can get my colony growing.
