  1. BEAUTIFUL fish Ric and thank you very much for sharing with us. I look forward to seeing more of these wonderful, colorful fish.
  2. This morning I woke up to my larger snail on top/in my smaller snail again. Since most of its body was outside the shell, I assumed the worst and went to poke the larger snail off of it. Turns out there was nothing wrong. The smaller snail flinched as soon as it felt the movement in the water and the larger snail moved off rightly. Both are fine from what I can see and I think it's a M/F pairing at this point. I'll see keep an eye on them to see if my ivory is indeed aggressive, since you never know but it's looking like a pair. Thanks for all the help and suggestions so far. If anyone knows what I can do about the foot, or if it'll return to the correct size as she(?) grows, please let me know.
  3. Wow, okay I'll ensure to keep an eye on them and keep breaking them apart regardless of what they're doing. That's kind of freaky.
  4. Krista, I think you're correct in that they are Pomacea diffusa. They look just like a banded and an ivory (which is what I purchased it as). I have never heard of them attacking either and I have been worried about it. I would be prepared for them to breed and lay eggs since the clusters aren't hard to take off. I have seen this in my larger ivory snail: But not in the smaller banded one. Based on applesnail.net, they're likely trying to reproduce. The temperature in my tank is a consistent 28oC and I put in one 3-Day Feeder (for calcium) a week and 3 algae wafers every few days. Then they clean up whatever my fish don't eat. The raised temp+abundance of food = snaily love I'm hoping her(?) foot starts growing in proportion with her, as she is very pretty! Any suggestions as to how else I could help the generation of her foot?
  5. That's what I had gathered, the foot is meant to be protection. I was assuming it was attacking, with the larger snail trying to get into the other's shell. I just couldn't be sure. Thanks for the post
  6. Below is a picture of my other snail. It's larger now than it is in the photo. Is it a mystery snail? There is a lot of food for both snails and they generally leave each other alone. I make sure to separate them if I see that happening. Uploaded with ImageShack.us
  7. Hi all, I got a small "mystery" snail a few weeks back and have noticed the foot isn't large enough to cover the opening. Will it catch up? Picture below. Also, I have been catching my larger mystery snail (about double to size of this one) "mounting" the smaller one and inserting itself into the other's shell. Is this mating or an attempt to kill the smaller snail? I don't know if they are male/female and am a bit concerned about the smaller snail. Any suggestions as to what is going on would be great Thanks, Trina Uploaded with ImageShack.us
  8. Welcome! -ham- Please post more pictures of your wonderful fish
  9. Thank you all for your help. I'm sad to report my last GBR went to fish heaven sometime overnight. He hadn't eaten or pooped for three days and I was really hoping he would hold on until Monday. He will be missed Thanks again. This thread can be closed.
  10. They are beautiful fish with big personalities. They can get to 3" if kept in the right conditions. I've lost all but one due to an ammonia spike. I'll certainly have them again someday though!
  11. Thanks RD, you're right that the difference between .5-1.0 is huge. My mistake on putting in the range. It was a bit darker than .5 but not dark enough to be 1.0. The shadowing in the picture doesn't help the case. I'll have to check what the bottles say when I get home. Interesting Ammonia Alert product, next time I'm at my LFS I'll look for it.
  12. I used an API test kit for this test last night. Straight from my tap in west Edmonton. Initially it turned to 0.25ppm then after the 5 minute period, was at 0.5-1.0ppm. Uploaded with ImageShack.us Here is the test I did for the other thread, on Dec 7, 2012: Might have to invest in the Seachem's kit when I'm in need of a new one. Either way, I'm glad this topic was brought up, it certainly helps to know what we could be dealing with.
  13. Very interesting article Jayba. Where do you purchase your Fluben from? I will likely have to try this if he doesn't pick up soon.
  14. That's interesting SGG! I might try that once he begins to eat again. His favorite food is brine shrimp so I can see the connection to live food. Would adding a trio create too much of a bio-load?
  15. As usual you're right on it Thanks for the advice, I'll try small (10%) daily water changes and see if that helps. I'll keep this updated as it goes along
  16. Hi all, I'm really hoping you'll be able to help me out with my last GBR. He's been breathing heavy, hanging out on the bottom with very little activity (he's usually active) and hasn't eaten anything for two days. His coloring is fine, although there is a little red around his gills and "snout". My tank parameters are 0-0-0, has been running for three months and all my other fish/clean-up crew are fine, active and eating. I've recently added two pieces of driftwood to bring down the pH (was 8.6 and now is 7.6) after boiling and soaking appropriately. The GBR was completely fine until I did a 10% water change (with gravel vacuuming) on Saturday. That's when he began to be affected. After reading the Ammonia Alert thread, I dosed my tank last night with 4mL of Prime as my ammonia was reading 0.25 and they've never reacted poorly to having an extra dose. My setup/parameters: -22 Gallon -Heater (28C consistently) -Aquaclear 30 (all components - sponge, carbon and white bioload thing) - Pre-filter on (sponge over intake) - Set on high unless feeding -Fake plants -2 large pieces of driftwood -8 Pristella Tetra -8 Red Phantom Tetra -2 Mystery Snails -1 Dwarf Gourami -1 GBR Additional note: I don't have a QT tank so that isn't an option at the moment. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks -Trina
