  1. Thank you everyone for the information and so sorry for the delayed response! I've actually decided to get out of the hobby, I just don't have the time these tanks deserve If anyone is interested I'm asking $200 for the 55 gallon community tank -everything including stock . I have a 55 gallon cichlid tank as well that I'm asking $200 for everything included.PIck-up only I'm located in Keoma about 30 mins from Calgary and 25 mins from Airdrie
  2. So I got my clips and went to set it up only to discover the canister is cracked, not sure how that one happened. Clearly I must be doing something wrong but it seems the pressure needed to get the top off is too much for the handle. Feeling a little inept but I don't seem to have much luck with this filter does anyone know of a canister filter that is fool proof? Has anyone had these problems before? and better yet does anyone have a canister for the Ehiem Ecco 60?
  3. Thanks for the info, I didn't realize plants would be ok with the hard water. The KH and GH seem to be too high for most of my fish from what I've heard but I'm new to testing these parameters I usually just keep an eye on the usual ph, nitrate and nitrites. The leaves on my plants are yellowing and just not thriving, I believe they are anubias, and crypts. Not sure if it's due to under fertilizing, I decreased feeding and fertilizing a few months ago as I was having excessive algae growth and a snail population boom. I have a satellite plus LED light that's on about 6 hrs a day (decreased it due to algae etc.) It only has the white and blue spectrum as it was a bit of a DIY fixer upper project when I bought it. Any suggestions on appropriate fertilizing ( use flourish without iron as I have a few ammano shrimp in there), etc would be much appreciated! So should I use the tap water for the planted tank and either distilled or RO for my cichlids? I'm just sketched with this tap water as I can't even drink or cook with it do to the metallic taste, and sulfur smell.
  4. Thanks for the suggestions! I'm not quite brave enough to try the duct tape but I did find an HOB filter that should suffice until I get the clips in. Used some biomedia from the old one so it shouldn't cause the the tank to cycle..here's to hoping!
  5. I am thanks. I just need them today as I'm out a filter, not sure what else to do.
  6. So I broke the handle clip off my Ehiem Ecco canister filter while cleaning today and am in desperate need of the the clip. Big Al's is out of stock and Pisces says the don't carry them does anyone know who else would carry them?
  7. So I have given up an getting any semblance of quality water from my well. I've tried pre-treating the water by running through a basic filter and aerating for a week but the KH is 21 dKh and GH about 70-90 ppm no good for my planted tank or cichlid tank. So I'm thinking of getting an RO system as buying bottled water is pricey as is running my distiller 24/7 but as I am a total newbie to RO systems I was hoping for some advice. I have one tank upstairs one downstairs and so lugging buckets of water isn't ideal but I'm not sure how these systems work. Could I run a hose from the RO system to the tank? I'm not looking for anything terribly fancy just functional so what should I be looking for in a system? Any help is much appreciated!
  8. Thanks for the reply! I Just tested the basics I don't have anything to testhardness etc. Nitrate - 0 Nitrite - 0 Ammonia - In between .6 and 1.2 PH - 8 Was surprised to find any trace of ammonia not sure if that's typical of well water. The water does go through a water softener but still smells slightly of rotten eggs and has stained my tub orange I've read up and they say it may not just be high iron but high magnesium causing the staining. Also if water is spilt on any surface and left it leaves a white residue when it dries which makes me think it's pretty hard. That pre-filter idea is awesome I just wonder if it would clean up whatever it is I may have in my water. Thinking I need to take a sample and send it to a lab to be analyzed I'd like to know the quality either way.
  9. I recently moved to a rural community (Keoma) near Cross Iron Mills Mall/ Balzac. I'm on well water however the quality of the water is pretty crummy. We don't drink or cook with the water due to taste instead we run a distiller. The animals all drink it and seem fine although they'd drink out of a mud puddle and be fine. Now I've been stuck buying water jugs and at a $1 a gallon and two 55 gallon tanks it's getting pricey! I can use the distiller but it takes 24 hrs to do 5 gallons and the electricity to keep it running is about the same as buying jugs of water. Has anyone had any experience with well water out this way and have they ever used it in their tanks? I would love to go back to using my Python for water changes and not paying for water but I'm worried about how my fish will fare on the well water. Any help or insight would be greatly appreciated!
  10. Just called Airdrie Petland and they say any HOB as long as it's not Aquaclear and it does come with media Thanks for the heads up!!
  11. So I started dosing the tank with Pimafix 2 days ago and he seems to be more active and showing more interest in food. Today I took a look and all of the fish even one of my cat fish were hanging around the top gasping for air! I panicked; tested my parameters and nothing was off enough to be causing this reaction but I did a water change and cleaned out my filter, everyone is back to normal, phew! I've been reading up and have noticed folks have seen this reaction before and recommend increased surface agitation as sometimes the Pimafix can deplete the dissolved o2, anyone heard of this before? Also wondering if I should increase my temp (it's at 75) and dose with aquarium salt as well. Any help would be greatly appreciated,I've not had to dose my tanks before. Thanks!
  12. I believe I have a cichlid with advanced fin rot and I'm not sure what to do! He's listless, just hanging around the top of the tank and his fins are whitish and ragged. Everybody else in the tank is fine. There is one big bully that picks on everyone but doesn't appear to be picking on this one anymore? Not sure if I should quarantine him or treat the entire tank. The biggest tank I have that I could use for quarantine is only 8 gallons. Specs: Tank-55 gallon Temp-75F PH-7.5 Nitrate-40 Nitrites-0 Ammonia-0 Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you!
  13. No go with Big Al's they won't open a new box and they have no floor models.....no luck with the manufacturer as it's not under warranty.... seriously I don't advise anyone to ever buy this brand of light, once they stop working there's no hope to even find out why it's not working.
  14. Excellent idea! I was thinking of doing that but wasn't sure if anyone around here sold them but for sure I'll try that tomorrow! I've exhausted every other option I ended up taking apart the remote and found it's a pretty cheap design so there's a good chance it could be that as I checked out the internal wires on the light an there's no corrosion, frayed wiring or anything so it's either the remote or the infrared sensor on the lights. Here's to hoping there's a way to order another remote.
  15. Perfect thank you! Good to know I don't have to rush out and buy something right away.
  16. Just looked at the tubes I have would a t8 work alright?
  17. Yea I should have known better. It was a good deal but without the lights I'm hooped. I've e-mailed him but I'm not expecting much. If anyone knows of anyone selling a good light for plants let me know. I do have two fluorescent tubes on it maybe I can find some tubes that would be alright for the plants? I'm a newbie to the larger planted tanks lol
  18. Thanks for the reply! I e-mailed the manufacturer today so hopefully I'll get a response soon. and yes it is indeed a poor design the more reviews I read the more I regret my purchase; at least the tank is nice. Just looking at the remote and it is glued together I would be afraid of cracking the circuit board if I start prying at it.
  19. Yep it sounds pretty hopeless I suppose as there really isn't anyway of troubleshooting that I can think of
  20. So I just bought a 55 gallon planted tank off kijiji and it came with the Satellite Freshwater LED V 1.0 light fixture. When I was picking it up buddy said it wasn't working as the remote needed a battery. I got a new battery and low and behold it still doesn't work. Pretty bummed as it's nice light and not to mention I need a replacement asap before my plants start dying off. Has anyone had any experience with these lights? It seems like an awesome light except there is no on/off switch on the light itself it can only be operated by the remote so I have no idea if it's the remote or the fixture itself. Really hoping it can be fixed as my BF is already unimpressed with the newest tank addition (he thinks 4 tanks are 4 too many) will be most unimpressed if I end up shelling out more cash lol. Any help is greatly appreciated!!
  21. I have a pothos and spider plant that's doing well in my betta tank, whether they're helpful or not I don't know but I like to think they are
  22. I have a friend who is looking into doing an aquaponics set-up with a 50 gallon. She knows a lot about plants but not much about fish so I thought I'd drop a line on here and see if anyone had any resources I could point her towards to get started. She started out with one of those little starter aquaponics set-ups with a betta, no filter and without cycling so I explained the nitrogen cycle and how it's kinda an important with aquaponics and figured that would have something to do with the poor cloudy water issue (not to mention from what I've heard they're crappy) But that's as far as I could help her so if anyone has any suggestions or good sites/books I would greatly appreciate it! Cheers!
  23. Yea I've been tempted to throw mine in my cichlid tank a time or two lol. If you do decide to go with a semi-aggressive tank lemme know as I'd glady give you my golden.
