  1. This is an old post but I'm in the same boat. When I do a 50% water change on my 90G cichlid tank the temp drops from 80F to 72F. All my hot water is soft so all I can use is cold. I refill my tank with a small 1/4" hose so it take about 2hrs to refill and drop the 8 degrees so its not like I'm shocking them with the drop in a few mins. Is an 8 degree drop to much? When it rains at lake Malawi how much does the temp drop? Could a temp drop and fresh water help with breeding? Any comments or help would be appreciated Thanks
  2. Here are 2 pix 1 shows 2 ottos above dark below light. the second pic is of the top darker otto. Ive only had him for a week or so and his stomach is sucked in I'm guessing the bacteria in its stomach died during transport and he will probably pass in the next few days. Do you think these are different species or the one is just darker because it is ill?
  3. Alright now were talking ottos. I'm interested now, How do you know yours are affinis? ive heard 99% of ottos in the Canadian market are vestitus. I have a bunch and some do look a touch different than others. Apparently telling the different ottocinclus species apart can only be done with electron microscope. id really like to know what I have.
  4. Great pix, I love the look of a swarm of cardinals. Ill have to snap some pix of my tanks tomorrow.
  5. I have some of these "strawberry peacock cichlids" unsure of age guessing about 6mo-1yr.not sure if they are different types or its a male & female of same species. Let me know if you have an id for these suckas. Thanks
  6. Pretty sure dosing excel will kill the shrimp as it contains copper. also pretty sure the betta, loach and cories will also eat the shrimp. I wouldn't add ottos to any tank that you can still see through the sides and back, they need a ton of nasty algae to munch on. looks like your pic is a dud try and edit the pic.
  7. It says 200LM per ft but that's when they are stretched out so 3 modules per ft 3led per module that's 200lm for 9 5mmX5mm leds. They are only .7"wide meaning I could put 2-3 rows in my 48" light bar. 48modules per row @ 3leds per module 144led per row. I could possibly fit 3 rows so 432 leds. 432(led) / 9(=200lm per 9 leds) = 48 x 200lm for a total of 9600lm. At this point the leds would cost around $100+. @ckmullin was telling me about the 48" sunblaster which may be a better choice at this point https://www.sunblasterlighting.com/grow-lighting/led-strip-lights/led-strip-lights-48-inch/ And I can then sell my 48" Aqueon bar. My idea came from http://www.aquaticplantcentral.com/forumapc/lighting/90930-aqueon-modular-led-mod-9-99-a.html I liked that I could add in some red & blue leds also. Thanks for the replys all.
  8. I have also been looking into adding LED strips to my 48" aqueon modular led bar. I found these http://www.ledjump.com/products/ledjump-ul-listed-super-bright-led-module-led-channel-letter-ul-listed-lighting-box-cree?variant=1634039875 looks like shipping is $25 no matter how many you order. Anyone want to split shipping on these universal waterproof LED strips? Dam cheap and from what ive read don't fade over time and are quite quality.

    Hi all!

Hi Starry welcome. What kind of fish/plant are you planning to keep?
  10. Hey Punman, I bought 15 yellow labs from you not long ago. Hows the new tropheus setup going?
  11. Only been here a few days but am surprised with the lack of activity. is this normal or just a slow time? BUMP THIS IF YOU CARE!
  12. Check out Lee Valley for some "plant nanny" watering stakes come in 2 sizes. Terra cotta excellent pleco caves. Also look pretty good for the price. http://www.leevalley.com/en/wood/page.aspx?p=62803&cat=2,66758&ap=1 The after pic is a lot better than the before. looked very un-natural.
  13. Older topic but... The ADA substrate does leach ammonia and also buffers the waters PH down. RCS(neocaridina) like HARD tap water with 12-18 dgh. Plants are a must for any shrimp especially moss. Your water tests should come out 0/0/0 even if feeding everyday. Ramshorn snails are also a very great tank mate for shrimp cleaning up and pooping out shrimp food :S Most common problem I have with shrimp is planaria and hydra. Dosing some planaria killer every few months will take care of both of those and keep the small snails in check. Hung Lee at SKA shrimp in Calgary is an amazing shrimp resource lookup on FB.
