  1. Fry with the Guppies. Waiting on Ameca Splendids. and a few others...
  2. should i buy more plant based foods like spirulina flakes?
  3. They have a very varied diet because of all their tank mates. Includes Nutrafin ( Tubifex worms, Bloodworms, Nutrafin (m) Color Enhance Flakes, Bottom feeder sinking food tabs, Spirulina meal tabs, Omega one Brine shrimp, New Life Spec community fish. Usualy 4 items in the morning and maybe 1 more later one but not always. Both kinds of tablets always go in, flakes and NLS switch on and off, and the worms and shirmp alternate days, 2 in 1 day doesn't usually happen unless the kids ae involved. And they are the only ones that eat my plants.
  4. Is they have a dimond pattern they'd be chinese. Fin damage seem to match how they attack. And the eat slim coats, which weakens their immune systems and can lead to death.
  5. I was just saying i know that mine are. When i got them the female was pregnant (previous owner had them in a species tank) and about 3-4 weeks after she gave birth but the fry didn't make it. The kribs where spwaning at the same time and the dropped too close to there cave, they killed them. Haven't seen anything else since, but i regullarily think she's knocked up.... heck i think she might be right now, but i'm not sure. She has a huge appitite, the plants suffer the most, but so far most are not destroyed.
  6. Yes, they are male and female, and i think i've seen mating. Lots of spinning and stuff around each other. Don't know where to find more, all the LFS i've been to give me a blank look when i say their name, don't know many hobbist that keep them, esp in edmonton.
  7. The pair i have had for over a year now is still not breeding. I haven't been able to find out why, i've added more plants, even floaters, put in more caves and other hidey holes for babies to survive in, but still i see nothing. Every time i think she's carrying it turns out she just needs to poop. What else is there that i can do??
  8. was it a 100% media change? Nothing of the old media to help good bacteria remain established? Might have more problems if things have to get re-established. Was the water test done before or after the water change? I wonder what improvements/changes its made. Another possiblity. Is there any chance water got into the bottle of prime? I'm thinking accedental splash/drops of water from the water change. Sometimes when it happens it can use up/deactivate the entire bottle. Some brands will have a colour change. Had it happen once to me with a bottle of aqua plus that had the measuring cup attached to the screw on cap. I tend to rinse the measuring cups in the water during changes, must of had some drops get into the bottle. The contents that where amber/brown went clear. After that it was not working and i had to buy another bottle (different brand).
  9. If your algea eater has a dimond patteren down it's sides it's a CAE, Chinese algae eater. They are known to harrass other fish and they like the taste of slime coats. Which can lead to death from they damage they cause. Other then that all i can think of is.... have they been breeding? Post partum can make them succeptable due to what their bodies have gone through, stress is harder and more deadly to take. It's the only time i've lost a female to harrasment stress.
  10. Lol, i know they will survive in the warmth. And if they're smart to stay near plants they wouldn't be kio food. if they do well, it's good they breed like rabbits. No worries about winter, in the spring you can get some more
  11. Great pond! Wish we'll have one like it when we have our own place. Is it in a low location in your yard? It may flood in the future if all your rain water is running into it and mucking it up, also might cause issues if you fertalize your lawn. Making a system to use the run off from your house is a great idea. Seen one house in St Albert that used a huge above ground pool (not stocked) to collect run off for their eleborate and beautiful garden. ...... Want some guppies to though in there too once it's warm??
  12. I had gone out at the end of august/beinging of sept, after that week of colder temperatures. I had found only 1 half dead stuck to the pump, brought him inside grandmas to see if he'd revive, but he was too far gone. Apparently the crows where the biggest problem. Grandma had to go out a few times to shoo them away with her broom. This next season i'll try and make a netting cover to keep them away, as the figurine owl didn't fool them long, they started knocking it into the pond. The week before i had gome out at tried to net them, but with a whole pond to get away in it was immpossible. I'll have to use something alot bigger next time around. The siblings that stayed at my house have frown up, and started to breed like crazy. I haven't been using a heater on their tank so it will be easy for the ones that can move out to the pond this spring/summer, but until then..... Anyone want a Guppie?
  13. What did you use to cover the Styrofoam with?
  14. I believe its because a lot of the fish species found in Alberta aren't doing so well numbers wise. Pretty sure some are protected.
  15. So, a while back i bought some Cory's. Like every Cory I've had before them they died. But they took a few fish with them, a Congo, a diamond, and my Male Krib Daddy. Mommy is now the single parent with her 2 sons. Now I'm not sure what to do for her. Would she pair up again?? would she prefer one of her offspring (I'm thinking bad idea anyway) or would she prefer a completely new man? Would they get along, or would it be a blood bath? Or would it be better to just get 2 girls for her boys and find her a retirement home??
  16. Went out and seen them again. Seems there was only 2 older ones now. Though i could of been missing some. The 2 i did seen grouped together with the new younger ones. Started thinking of reasons why i didn't see as many of them. Since looking into the waters when the first of them where released, i haven't seen much of the small water bugs or skeeter larvae. Thought maybe the natural food sources haven't been enough to support them all. So i gave my Grandma some tropical flake food to give them once every day or two to help them out some. If food is the issue. Other then that, there isn't much i can do but see what nature troughs there way. With August starting, I'm starting to wonder when to pull the survivors out. And how to winter them since I've read that adjusting from tank h2o to pond h2o is easier when they're young but pond h20 to tank h20 is a lot harder once they're adults. Suggestions??
  17. Seen 3 of them out there and they look great. I think one was even looking pudgy like preggers pudgy lol. I didn't even see a male in those 1st 6 but there is defiantly one now. Can't wait to see how these new guys do.
  18. Sounds cool My Grandma just got back from Scottland, so I'm going to see how they're doing. According to her and some cousins, they're still there and doing well. Going to add 6 more that i've been wanting to add for a while now. Especially since there is 30 or so new ones. I'll let you know how it goes
  19. The stem plants... are they they softer ones? They wouldn't last in this tank, lol. Is their a specific ratio the like? or will tabs i see in the dollar store be ok?? ( i think they're for flowers, 10-4-10 or 10-4-4 or something...)
  20. Not really at least with these 2. They can be bossy, makes it funny to watch a male Ameca and the Male Krib square off. Looks a bit dancey. The Kribs are the only ones they really have a problem with ( Prehaps its the history of them eating their fry that bugs them) They don't bug anyone else as much.
  21. Buy the time the are 3 weeks, possible sooner, you'll have to remove them from mom and dad as they'll start to breed again. I did water changes mainly just with a cup in the 29 G. If i had to gravel vac i stayed away from the cave/area mom and kids were in. Though i found with moving slowly they aren't disturbed as much and are capable of moving out of the way if they are close. Though keep any eye on them. Moving slow and not stirring up the water too much seems to help reduce mom and dads stress in the first week or so.
  22. OK, so after some more watching I've boiled it down to a possible cause. The AH Tiger Barb. He has single hand-idly killed the 3 other barbs he used to be with, he picks on the Diamond and Congo Tetras, and the Guppies. I'm starting to think that the stress he's up on the girls caused them to die. The Blue is still in hiding and her fins are more torn up then I've ever seen them. Her fins where perfect before. So, even though I've designed the tank to have lots of ground cover, I've no floating plants for top cover. With the Amecas in mind, what could i use??
  23. Just wondering what sort of things can happen to the girls after they have given birth. My black Female had her third and largest batch a couple weeks ago, and once transferred to the new main tank she along with all the other Guppies hid out. A day later the Blue had her 1st seen batch, out loose in the fry tank like suggested, she's been hiding since transferred too. I missed the Albinos birth, but she was suddenly skinny. And the new Yellow i'm still waiting on, she's been in the fry tank over a week. Thought she was close, guess i was wrong but she's got a safe place to wait now. Since then, the Black has turned up dead, the Albino still lives but she's running out of time, her swimming is horrible. She's almost constantly upside down or on her side. The Blue still hides. In the fry tank the Yellow seems fine. I have seen no sign of the Flamingo Male in a while. I have no clue what's going on.
