What kind of life can you expect out of MH bulbs compared to PC or T5 bulbs? just wondering

any harm in them? i ask cause after i do water changes the tank is just full of them. In some cases they are even clinging to the fish pretty good. Or is it just more of a cosmestic pain the butt?

2x over driven would be a much more conservative way to go. that would be a 4 lamp ballast running 2 lights increasing the bulbs intensity by 1.7x. thats what i have on the go and an quite happy with the increase in light and yet little amount of heat produced.

Its a little DIY involved but nothing too hard for even someone like myself who has never messed with electrical before. I got the idea from another member on this site who has an awesome looking planted 90 gallon (if i remember correctly). read that link and do some searching on overdriving t8 flourescent bulbs.

where can you get these modules that you speak of?

i HAD 3 of these fish (probably 1.5" to 1.75") living together with a handful of some very small (under an inch) mbuna and haps in a 10 gallon. the water temp was about 80 and i did small W/C's every couple of days. this was my first go at these fish and so far has not been so great. I have 1 left and would like to see him live. The others had no visible signs of being roughed up nor any visible abnormalities. Just found them dead. any info would be great.

those are just aggressive fish- i had to get rid of mine for the same reason. the little bugger wouldnt leave anyone else alone.

i want to find some sort of netting bag that i can fill with stuff- anyone know what im talking about? i just dont want to dump all sorts of media in there with out it being somewhat easy to swap out or clean.

where can you buy filter floss? like the stuff you used to have in your easter basket (or the stuff you still have in there )?

I picked up a Eheim 2250 canister and am looking to stock the canister with cheaper media alternatives than Eheim (thats german for expensive right?) media. any suggestions on what i should use? bio balls? ceramic tubes? busted up laval rock? floss? any suggestions and where i can find these things would be appreciated
