Cleaning Algae

Does anyone know the best way to clean algae off porous surfaces, like lava rock?

Not sure how to tackle this, do they sell a product you can soak the rock in? What would work best for cleaning algae off tank ornaments with little nooks and crannies in them (hard to get at with a scrubber)?

Just thought I am likely not the first person to wonder this so it would be great to learn from some of the combined experience here on this excellent forum.

I would just use a sink of warm water and a scrub-brush on the rock (or a pressure washer), a slightly softer brush on the ornaments.

I've cleaned algae off my lava rock by using a bleach solution(to kill the algae) and then use a scrub brush to get the algae off. Took a bit of elbow grease but it worked.

Then just rinse really well and l let dry to make sure the bleach is gone.

i was thinking bleach might be usefull. what sort of mix ratio do you use?

based on what i have read in this and other forums, for the most part there is nothing that works better or comes more recommended than good old fashioned water and elbow grease.

i think one of us should develop a product to help with cleaning algae, might be an idea to take to the dragons (on cbc).

i was thinking bleach might be usefull. what sort of mix ratio do you use?

5%-8% does just fine...make sure you use a pure bleach, though...nothing with 'fibreguard' or scent in it.

I have some stuff that is called CLEAN-IT, made by Aquatronics.

Haven't tried it yet. It was given to me and I was told it works good.
