Toirtis
Leave both running together for at least 10-14 days so that the new filter can become well-seeded with bacteria.
Vallisneria
OR transfer the old media into the new filter.
Sam Chicklets
With as heavily overstocked as your tank is you should leave them both running all the time and alternate cleaning them every week.
P@UL
my tank is not over stalked anymore
Sam Chicklets
I run dual filters on most of my tanks and alternate cleaning them this way you always have a filter with good culture running in it. AND as far as over stocking you still have a large load on your tank according to what you have listed for a 30g tank. Your best bet is to buck up and pay attention to what people are telling you and you will have a lot more success.
skinless
yeah keep em both if you can.. your fish will likely appreciate the extra filtration. and if one ever screws up, the backup is already running. and it will help quite alot when you start to set up more tanks lol. enjoy
