New 450 gallon. Update!! Update 08/08/16
skinless replied to t-man's topic in General Aquaria Discussion
oh man cant wait to see the stocked pics. did you go 30" high because of the blacks going in? -
my experience with vortex xl diatom filter. it will clog quick if left as a primary filter or used in obscene situations. i use mine only to give my tank the odd 'wax' after waterchanges.(it does work great!!!) the first run and charge/discharge of de will probably seem tricky. you will get wet. (you'll get the hang of it after the first couple uses.) always discharge before storing away lol the de can get expensive. i just bought a larger box of the 'official de' but have read of others going to pool/spa shops for de. some kinds may be harmful through those sources though. and no huffing the de. really bad for the lungs!! yep tricky to justify getting one considering the cost. mine was xmas gift! huzzah

i had actinic bulbs on a seperate timer come on as dusk/dawn buffers a few years back. one hour before and one hour after the daylight cycle. not nearly as sharp as leds, but it did have its benefits. the basement darkness to fluorescent brightness was not such a huge swing for the fish and i was able to watch some cichlid behaviour that may have escaped under the cloak of darkness. again, these were just the plain old actinic bulbs.

my timers are set 1am to 9am in non planted tanks. the display lights are only on for 8 hours but thats cause i dislike algae. my fish room is dark enough during the day and any work during the day can be done with room lighting. whoops planted tank forum, i thought it was gd (10 or 12 hours)

congrats on the gt fry. any other new world setups? consider using them as feeders! i'm familiar with the true gt (only have seen rapps with it) but its safe to say the saums will always be referred to as green terrors.

great article on breathable bags by rusty wessel in feb 06 TFH; pros: he claims storage for weeks + during collection trips and knows of month long confinement. smaller packaging with zero oxygen bagged! calmer fish during transport and less chance of injury (trip down stairs = fish rotate in place) bags are extremely hardy and reusable. (apparently spine punctures can reseal in some cases !?) and blowout survival may increase. cons: bags cannot be packed together ~ tomato carton style transport looks like a good way to divide em. no floating (drip acclimation is better anyways). careful where you place the bags. they can absorb chemicals off of surfaces. mmmm like lysol! airbreather species are hooped!
