It's all about the fins. On the males the first dorsal fin will touch or cross the beginning of the second dorsal when folded down. The females first dorsal will fall short of touching.

With sepiks, the second dorsal will also be more elongated on the males, crossing the tail as they get older.

Yes I realize that.... That is the case with Turquois and Red Rainbows and many other types of Rainbows that the males and females are colored the same.... its not an exact sience from my expierence but a good indication.... It has to be a royal pain to try and see the gap with the fry that size tho... I am going to go and see if I can see the gap with my Boemani fry.

I would be interested in knowing where you purchased your Rainbows... could you PM on that!
