Slough Shark
If anyone saw last Tuesday's Survivorman episode, you may remeber that he used hand sanitizer as a sort of tinder to start his fire. I decided to try it for myself... kids, don't try this at home. http://s109.photobucket.com/albums/n59/lad...¤t=462_6290.flv Edited October 20, 2007 by Slough Shark
Vallisneria
That link isn't bringing me to your video. It takes me to the main photobucket page.
Slough Shark
Thanks, I don't know why, but I will post the Direct Link, HTML Tag, and IMG Codes... http://s109.photobucket.com/albums/n59/lad...nt=462_6290.flv http://s109.photobucket.com/albums/n59/lad...nt=462_6290.flv I hope that works... I really think this stuff would be a blessing if you were in a survival situation without any tinder. It catches the spark easily and holds the flame until the alchohol is burnt out of the solution. Toirtis
Considering that most sanitisers are a good 70%+ alcohol, that is not surprising at all (Purell burns really well, as does the Life brand). Now, try rubbing the corner of a sugar cube in some ash (cigarette ash works well) and lighting it.

nicolalex
I guess one shouldn't light a fire after just using hand sanitizer. I'll have to keep it in mind next time we're having a problem starting our campfires. A new lesson on survival firemaking for the boys. Sam Chicklets
There was a construction worker seriously burned lighting a cigarette right after using hand cleaner.
Slough Shark
Yeah thats hot stuff. I put a little puddle in my hand and lit it, it sure lets you know that it's on fire thats for sure. But messing around aside, it would be a great tool if you were lost in the bush. Murminator
If I'm going out in the bush where there is the potential of getting lost I'm taking gas not hand sanitizer Edited October 21, 2007 by Murminator
Slough Shark
lol, the sanitizer is slightly less dangerous than gasoline though, I have had a few hairs singed from gas pits, those fumes are sketchy!
bosshog
Just got back from the bush. We had a jug of sanitizer left in the grub cupboard so I tried it. Worked like a charm. Put some on a piece of paper towel and fired up the stove.
