Boom
So my wife and I were talking last night and she said that for our anniversary, she wants to get me a BIG tank and let me build it into the wall in the basement. It'll be either a 150 or (preferably) a 180 gallon tank! I do custom woodworking so it'll be built into a wall space that is 11'9" wide and 2' deep with custom cabinets underneath, canopy, and shelving all around for storage of books, games and kids toys etc. Filtration will likely be handled by a large sump tank (about 50 gallons), and I am considering heating that or having in-line heaters. I will post progress pics as I go. Now, what to put in it...??? I was thinking 2 large groups of Tropheus. Could I put other tanganykn fish in with them? Other thoughts? I'm so excited! jvision
Sounds like a beaut! I've never kept Tropheus, but they're on my must-have list for "Someday". I've heard they're quite aggressive, but I would try some cats - Synodontis eupterus is my fav.
Parachromis1
Sounds like quite the plan!! You might want a bigger sump though lol.
Boom
I hope your being sarcastic about a larger sump??? Actuallty I estimated wrong and it's about 36 gallons. 44"x12"x16". My dad had planned to use that for his 485 gallon, wouldn't it be enough for a 150 or 180?
Parachromis1
I usually use 1/3 the volume of the tank and use that as a sump. I would use at least a 60 for your sump.
Murminator
One word "Salt"
Boom
It'll not be salt water FOR SURE. 1/3 the tank size??? That's nuts.
Parachromis1
Trust me, I love sumps, and have used them for forever.
Boom
Looks like it will be a 150, don't have a tank yet tho. Still looking for one. To use a sump does the tank HAVE to be drilled and have overflows? What other options do I have for enough DIY filtration, Can I build my own large cannister filter? Parachromis1
Check out the DIY section at MonsterFishKeepers.com for some great ideas on building your own filters. I built my own sump, and it works wonders. I stole Chris' idea(Canucklehead) I turned a 3 drawer storage system into the best sump ever. Boom
pimpdocta, do you have plans for the sump you built?
Parachromis1
pimpdocta, do you have plans for the sump you built? Yes I do, but sadly they're not in english. My dad helped me out and he reads/writes better in russian. So by all means if you can understand russian I'll send em to ya! Otherwise you'll be in the dark haha.
