I don't know what happened but i was doing a thorough cleaning of my 40 gallon Koi tank and Nakama in the 20 gallon tank went belly up within an hour. I had the 2 filters from the main tank on the 20 gallon and there was plenty of air in the tank so i'm not sure why it happened. We'll miss you.

Sounds like either pH or temperateure shock. I'm not sure why you were 'cleaning' the tank in such a way that you had to move the fish. Water changes and siphoning out sludge on the bottom of the tank should be sufficient. If you're doing that radical a clean on yor 40G tank, you're probably eliminating the beneficial bacteria in the process.

I"m sorry.

You were cleaning the 40g but the fish died in a 20g?Were you cleaning the 20g too?

Did you remember to add the dechlorinator? How big are these koi that you are keeping in such small tanks?

I moved the 2 koi to a empty 20 gallon while i was cleaning the main tank (removing decorations and removing the old small gravel (separating from the small rocks)

I did remember to put in Prime so that is another reason i'm puzzled. The two were about six and seven inches each and Nakama was much bigger. I've bee watching the 40 gallon tank to make sure they aren't croweded but they were happy together in there. Kuchi has been swimming back and forth and around and around as if he's looking for his friend.

Did you test the water after he died? You might have over cleaned the tank and affected the bacteria. 2 koi in a 40g produce a lot of waste. If the bacteria was reduced you might have had a spike.

In the future you shouldn't do such a bit cleaning all in one shot. If you have to remove gravel, you need to do it in small amounts as the gravel bed contains a large quantity of a tanks bacteria.
