  1. Infected wound or any sickness Hospital tank and keep the water really really clean, UV light if you can, a smidgen of salt can't hurt. daily full water changes with exactly the same temp of water to avoid stress, NLS whichamacallit food for sick fish. that's what I would do to start
  2. Hi I noticed one night this Fish was near the top of the tank in the middle breathing really really hard. The other fish avoided them or chased it away and there were no signs of stress on any other fish (breathing, black barring on the peacocks, clamped Finns, not eating, flashing, excess slime coat, etc.) the ONLY symptom on ANY fish was the heavy breathing on the one Mbuna. I fell asleep and in the morning it was dead. I pulled it out and since it hadn't been touched by the other fish I checked the gills. NO Gill tissue was left except the Gill plate. absolutely no trace. It just had bare bone visible. I have done a water change and dosed with salt but I really need to identify the culprit so I can prevent this from happening again! THANK YOU
  3. Hi I picked up an Aqua clear 500 that was missing the impeller shaft. I was hoping someone who has one could give me the measurements of it as I do have a number of Spare unlabeled impeller shafts. And does anyone know where I can pick up another motor for the extra housing I picked up. Thank you Everyone!
  4. I would be interested in a group buy. I was at that meeting and it was very very intriguing!
  5. belvedere sports on 82nd st just north of yellowhead
  6. a little tip i picked up is 1 never go cheaper cuz it'll cost you and 2 don't use a heater rated for a tank larger than what yours is. Not saying you did just a tip in case you might have. Sorry it happened to you.
  7. stop by the dollarstore and get little craft ziplock bags and portion out meals out for each tank in them and label the day. Be Sure she knows that you cannot double the amount if she forgets a day and its no biggie if she does forget a day or two. Automatic feeders are my lifesaver. Have dechlorinator and bacterial supplement with easy emergency doseing instructions taped to THE bottle ie. 1 capfull. Have a list of contacts she can call for questions. speak to your nearby fish store not general pet store to see if they would mind if you listed them as a contact for when you are gone. you could put the bloodworms in the baggies too. Depending on weather in July and your setup have a backup in case of overheated tanks. frozen blocks of dechlorinated water in ziplock bags work well. an extra ziplock handy so she canrun to the store if she is unsure about the water. Good luck L
  8. oh and its about a centimeters in diameter and perfectly round. it also definitely not the waste hole. Got a better look. its easily 5millimeters deep if not more the flashlight couldn't see all the way in.
  9. Its reddish in spots about the width of his body on host belly almost between the fins. I can't get a good look at it he doesn't appear stressed but I could be wrong about that because I h ave never seen him anything but fully coloured. I am baffled. Help
  10. Thanks everyone. I have a bubble curtain in that tank going at all times to keep my white sand clean so no worries there. In terms of overstocking well it definately is because it is an african cichlid tank and the yellows won't stop spawning. Anyway long story short thank you Jayba i did plug it in and no worries. I guess it pays to buy the best in more than one way. It was the water pouring out from where the power cord goes into the unit that had me panicing. Thanks again everyone now everyone is as happy as can be. L
  11. I just took off my Eheim Pro 3 cannister filter to rinse (in tankwater) and add some filter floss. When i went to put it back on the tank i filled it up first with some tank water to get it started easier. as i was lifting and slightly tilting it to place it back under the tank i noticed allot of water coming out from the edges. I thought at the time the seal was not on properly or some such. I took it out again and went into the bathroom and removed the lid. The TOP was pouring water from every hole including from where the electrical cord goes into the unit. Now i'm scared to plug it in and fry it completely. ANYONE Please some advice. My 80 gallon currently has had NO filter for a half an hour now. Thanks L
  12. A photo based beautiful tank contest would be wonderful for those that dont want visitors and those that dont have excellent cameras. To avoid fraud the winner would haveto post another recognizable photo with some random object inside it like 3 one inch pieces of airline tubing. Not everyone has a good camera and almost nobody thinks their tank will stand up to others so to avoid the whole embarrassment some might have thinking their thank isnt good enough or just pkain old not wanting to be critisized there should be numbers and no names attatched. To avoid a lack of participation have a minimum number of participants or else the contest doesnt go ahead to prizes. Give 3 months for people to get their tank perfect and when the photo is submitted reply with your choice of random object or number taped to the tank glass. and have them take the picture immediately in case of disaster. If i was better with techy stuff id volunteer to organise but i fear it would only end in dissappointment that way Heres to hopeing and i would love to see someone win a contest like this. L
  13. Thanks for the bit on Ferts and shrimp. About the florish substrate you can forget about gravel vaccuming. In my fluval edge that same stuff has degraded and any disturbing of the substrate sends up huge clouds of fine black sediment that takes forever to clear up. If i had the ability to go back in time there would be no way on earth that i would use it again. Personally if you want the softer water you need to remember CO 2 does affect ph by lowering it. In doing my reading and questioning before seting up my Edge planted tank i remember hearing that one of the biggest reasons for persistant problem algae is lack of water flow. I strongly reccomend the powerhead sponge filters as they serve a dual purpose. If you want air at night put a airsone in on a timer you could even have some fun with underwater hidden led lighted bubble curtains for a nighttime change of pace a smal whie one on the bottom behind a pile of rocks in the middle to backligt the rocks oohhh i am getting excited just picturing it in my head. The lights are about as bright as moonlight so not very but the effect could be stunning. Good luck L
  14. Thank you for all the help with my Koi all those years ago He has since moved into a huge beautiful pond nearby with lots of fishy friends. Welcome to AA.
  15. Take 2 flat pieces of slate and place the corner of them on the curtain and bury the rest in the sand. the slate won t be heavy enough to kink the hose but the shape will do a better job of not being moved off whereas a rock can be rolled or tipped much easier. Suction cups work BUT only of you dont have the sand in the tank when you put them in and have something to attatch it to thats small on both ends Bubble curtains do a really great job of stirring up any debris off the bottom of the tank so the filter can pick it up
  16. I must admit i'm guity all too often of neglecting a tank I have one tank that i really wasn't happy with and it had fish i didn't really care about or want and couldn't see a way of getting rid of soo..... It always was the last of the tanks to get cleaned and i'm sure it was over 6 months between water changes I didn't loose any fish and they all seem to be doing well still. I tested the water and suprisingly evaporation must have taken care of the excess of nitrates there should have been because i got a suprising reading and double checked it with another newer test kit. I don't know why but ever since then i have been more diligent with cleaning. It's one of two tanks that i have neglected ever and both haven't seen any deaths, regardless i have always done regularish water changes on all the other tanks and usually more than 50% at a time. I rarely loose fish unless it's due to... (F edge GRrrr pulls hair out) In conclusion it's best to just keep up the water changes regardless. a small small amount frequently is much better than larger ones more infrequently. In my 30 gallon i've started to to one 2 liter water jug every other day as an experiment, some people advocate a 100% water change as often as possible. Each to their own i say as long as the fish are happy and healthy. If you don't keep them up then you are risking a greater chance of fish death and not to mention disease due to stress. If you do negelect the tank work on gradually getting the water back to prime not all at once. Reduce feeding if possible until it's better. Plant plants or add floating plants in a basket if you have plant eaters. Good luck L
  17. GE silicone 1 is what i used on my 80 gallon and i think there are some tips in my journal that i put there from the mistakes i made when i first sealed the tank. Rona also carries silicone that is labeled aquarium safe but it's white in colour so be careful of that unless you want white. Good luck L
  18. I don't know why but frozen and reanimated goldfish rings a bell with me too. Personally if you want to keep them alive for the two weeks I'd get a big tupperware container or rubbermaid for them to be in and by doing so you can hopefully increase the amount of water the fish have to pollute and the filter remove waste for. Put it in or near a window with some floating plants and don't worry about them. A double dose of prime wouldn't hurt either. My dad allways brings up the story of when he and his brothers had a few goldfish in a tank in the garage and they went away for the summer and when they came back the fish were in yuckey green goopy water about 3 inches deep and still alive. Even taking into account some exaggeration based on that account the fish should be perfectly fine for 2 weeks. get a feeding block or automatic feeder and your set. I doubt they'd all starve to death before you could get home even without the feeding block. Freezing them in my humble opinion is a riskier prospect. Good luck L
  19. That reminds me of a post a while back, someone had left the lid off the NLS  and the cat got in it and ate it all. Cat dish was full too. What an expensive cat treat . Don't worry about it right now, the fish will get used to it. Mine were gluttons for it from the start it's just anything else that i have trouble with now. You might also try the pellets at a later time. Good luck L
  20. Ít's tonight everyone. See you there.
  21. rocks worked in my smaller cichlid tank and in my koi tank so try that first. small flat river rocks i found were best since they didn't sink as easily in the sand/
  22. What a great story I think his name might just be a little too obvious but i`m currently watching Survivor so umm maybe Vivor for a different suggestion. Thanks for something cherrful to brighten our days. It goes to show that fish can be tougher than you might ever imagine. Have a wonderful day L
  23. next time you decide you to come to edmonton give me a shout and i`ll give you my number so you can call and get directions if you can`t find it. this is how i tell people how to find it Head east on yellowhead and take the first off ramp after the North Sask river. As you go around watch at the top and take a left down the service road that goes parallel to the yellowhead. If you hit the stop light you need to do a 180 and head east again. Good luck L

    Moss'

Krazy glue. Brand name only! Much better than thread since no tyeing, and no potential loose threads in future that may strangle your fish(BN plecco chewed through my cotton thread and then got the loose end wrapped around his neck and cutting into his gills but he`s alive and healthy now cuz i caught it sooo quick) Krazy glue works amazingly well, it was designed for medical use aka wound closing so it`s fish tank safe too. I agree with everyone else on the speed thing, As long as it`s free of algae which can be a problem since it grows sooo slowly, i`ll take a while if you are watching it but if you forget about it next thing you know it`s taken over. the Stuff i glued on wood seems to grow faster than the other stuff, could be my imagination though, There are other things you can do with it like glue it to a plastic screen and have a natural background, you can even take that plastic mesh and shape it into hills or rock shapes and glue it like that or a moss coverd rock look. have fun L
  25. Dang i'd really love a White halfmoon. I don't think i could handle the amount you have but one would be lovely. I saw some at Aquarium central and i just couldn't help but stare at it for a few minutes and wish i had the cash to take one home. Congrats on your new "shoe" collection. L
