Here is a video I shot and edited of a Hermit Crab in my Saltwater Tank. Noticed it was checking out a shell really hard and figured Imight get a good shot of it changing. So, here you go.

Not sure how often they change shells but they do have to find bigger homes when they outgrow their old one.

I have seen a group of about 50 in a tidal pool on Vcr Island that were changing shells constantly. It was quite funny b/c one would check out a new shell and jump in, then another crab would jump right into the shell just vacated; then the first crab would jump into the shell the 2nd crab just left. VERY entertaining!

I honestly don't know much about them, but from what I understand, they will change if they have outgrown their current shell, or if they find another shell which 'strikes their fancy' a little more.

The shells start to break down and get thin......and they usually change just before a molt

Cool film, we have a bunch of blue, black, and red legged hermit crabs and it is amusing to watch.
