DanGofCalgary
is this safe ? the water is from off of the roof of my house That;s a 'depends' question. How old is the roofing? Has it been sufficiently weathered that you aren't picking up any chemicals etc. Rain water is very VERY soft. I knew a lady that used rainwater for cory spawning and was amazingly succesful with it. I think she eventually went high tech to RO system, but she spawned and raised a lot of corys in rain water mix. I'd suggest mixing the rainwater with tap water, about 50/50 and try it with some soft water species. see how they like it. Or start off with some guppies, see if they die. -roll-
nautilus
My first thought was that if it was a new roof, there is a lot of runoff of chemicals etc. If an old roof, alot of bird poop and rotting junk in the gutters. My rainbarrels are usually full of algae for some reason. Just a thought.
jvision
I know a few people in town who use rainwater. Some have lots of floating plants in their barrels to help clean out some of the crap. Passing the water through a carbon filter would clean it up nicely. slingshotz
Make sure you test the water first. I discovered that my rainwater had a very high PH (about 7.8) and very soft. This was a very old roof that was gravel and not shingles.
